Topic: Confirmed: US has raw fuel for long time

I posted, roughly two years ago, how the United States had so much fuel as to last a 'very long time'.

I provided amounts, years it would last, and more.

Today I was vindicated by an energy think tank.

First a language lesson

Recoverable means oil that can be obtained (still using formulas from before fracking btw)

Proven reserves are those reserves claimed to have a reasonable certainty (normally at least 90% confidence) of being recoverable under existing economic and political conditions, with existing technology. (Still not covering fracking due to newness of the method)

The amount of oil that is technically recoverable in the United States is more than 1.4 trillion barrels, with the largest deposits located offshore, in portions of Alaska, and in shale in the Rocky Mountain West. When combined with resources from Canada and Mexico, total recoverable oil in North America exceeds 1.7 trillion barrels.

To put this in context, Saudi Arabia has about 260 billion barrels of oil in proved reserves. For comparative purposes, the technically recoverable oil in North America could fuel the present needs in the United states of seven billion barrels per year for around 250 years.

Proved reserves of natural gas in the United States and throughout North America are enormous, and the total amount of recoverable natural gas is even more impressive. The EIA estimates that the United States has 272.5 trillion cubic feet of proved reserves of natural gas. The total amount of natural gas that is recoverable in North America is approximately 4.2 quadrillion (4,244 trillion) cubic feet.

Total supplies of natural gas in North America dwarf those of other countries. The United States, Canada, and Mexico have more technically recoverable natural gas resources than the combined total proved natural gas reserves found in Russia, Iran, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkmenistan.

With respect to total recoverable resources, however, North America

What? No liberal trying to say peak oil at the top of his lungs? No accusations of my being paid by oil companies?

Nothing at all?

Re: Confirmed: US has raw fuel for long time

My Economics professor confirmed what you say back in April. However, he also mentioned that shale oil is not feasible. It currently (at least in 04 of 2010) is so costly to extract compared to its profits that a businessman is wise to look elsewhere. He seemed particularly interested in the availability of natural gas though.

Although not Liberal, he's certainly moderate in his views.

Re: Confirmed: US has raw fuel for long time

Tell him a company with a test license can burn 1/4 the shale they mine to get the oil from the other 3/4

Re: Confirmed: US has raw fuel for long time

Fracking is bad for the ecology and health of humans living in the area. the risks of polluting the ground water with the chemics used in the fracking-process are high.

Re: Confirmed: US has raw fuel for long time

peak oil is a load of bollucks they have absoloutly no clue how much is in the reservoir. i know i'm a petroleum geologist.

@reallybig:
I'm the new president of the united states tongue No offense but that doesn't count on an anonymous forum.

@einstein:
The only useful point when discussing energy resources is the total return on investment, not only the amount of barrels.
To name a few important issues it ignores:
-A barrel of oil has a certain quality. It determines it value.
-The cost in manpower
-The cost in oil barrels to produce a barrel. (if you need 5 barrels to provide 6 you only gain 1)
-The cost in raw materials (to build infrastructure)
-The cost in administration
-The transportation cost (where is it located?)
-The security cost (its a military target for terrorists)
-The potential damage crazy protesters can do. (for nuclear transport in Europe for instance this is a real burden)

for foreign supplies there are additional costs:
-The cost in defense
-The cost in diplomacy

In order to provide solid arguments for you claim, you need to discuss those points as well.
