Topic: Food Shortage? Hahahahahahahaha!

Food shortages are a lie.

When acres of corn is harvested as fuel it is not a shortage of food, but an over abundance of political payoffs.

When hops is grown for beer and no one consider plowing in some wheat then there is no dying need.

When cotton is grown in excess of need then there is no issue.

When grapes are grown at all, your drunk to think there is a shortage.

When food of no real nutrient value (I am looking at you lettuce) is grown we have excess.

When trees are not replaced with fruit or nut trees your nuts to think there won't be enough.

Dictators may steal food intended for drought victims, parents may be to embarrassed to ask for aid to feed their children, a person may go hungry for three days cause he really wanted that XBox game... but there is no shortage.

The core joke of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is that of course no civilization would develop personal computers with instant remote database recovery, and then waste this technology to find good drinks.
Steve Jobs has ruined this joke.

Re: Food Shortage? Hahahahahahahaha!

You'll be surprised by the amount of calories beer provides... If it were not for the need for other nutrients than just plain energy and the fact that acetaldehyde (the intermediairy step between alcohol and it's final breakdown product, acetic acid which is bound to coenzym-A to form acetyl-CoA which is used in the citric acid cycle to produce energy) is kind of... toxic, alcohol could be the basis for a great, energetic meal.

Re: Food Shortage? Hahahahahahahaha!

it's fairly easy to solve every world problem if you could choose to disregard all the bothersome factors.

like economical( nobody's gonna produce food for people who can't afford it)

personal gain( unfortunately and absurdly there actually is a market for lettuce)

transportation: kind of hard getting those tomatos to the desserttribe in time before they are rotten.

in terms: I know you started this as more of a gag and I agree with you about the satire this world has become.

but if all problems were so easy to fix....

Re: Food Shortage? Hahahahahahahaha!

I feel like the issue Flint is attempting to address is fundamentally different from the issues other people here are assuming he is attempting to address.

Flint clearly does not state that hunger doesn't exist... in fact, he specifically states that inefficiencies in distribution networks exist (he specifically mentioned dictators stealing food will impede local markets in solving the food shortages in the region).  Yet that's the way most people in this thread are addressing his post.

Rather, Flint is addressing the issue of a food shortage in the context of a Malthusian crisis, i.e., a global food shortage.  Given the need to increase the global efficiency of food supply and distribution, the world has the capacity to meet the demands of the current and future populations, not even considering future advances in food production as a result of new technology.

Re: Food Shortage? Hahahahahahahaha!

There is a food shortage, and it will worsen as a problem with the amount of soil erosion. For example, corn causes one of worst rates of soil depletion. However, corn is one of the most profitable crops, thanks to idiots who see a future in ethanol. So it's understandable why less scrupulous farmers are engaging in continuous corn production.

However, soil erosion and foot shortages don't have to be a problem. There are farming possibilities that would eliminate the growing problem of soil erosion and food shortages. However, those possibilities wouldn't be very profitable, and they would favor massive plantations due to economies of scale.

There is a difference between having a shortage and the possibility of new development to correct that shortage. But I will say I agree with you that there are plenty of opportunities to correct the shortage we have right now. Although, I am not too excited about your idea of hacking every tree to put more land in to production. We can do some of that, sure, but the way you make it sound seems like you support the same policies that caused the Dust Bowl. Also, you fail to consider that farming mountains, while possible, is extremely expensive.

Re: Food Shortage? Hahahahahahahaha!

Re: Food Shortage? Hahahahahahahaha!

You talked about farming mountains in another thread. And while you never mentioned cutting down trees, you present yourself as having an attitude that disrespects conservationism (environmental philosophy of conserving nature sufficient to secure its renewed use and prevent environmental disasters).

But I apologize if that is not your view.

Re: Food Shortage? Hahahahahahahaha!

Oh I can give a crap if we top a hundred mountain peaks and fill ravines for more farmland...

Only it is not needed.

We do not need to turn yards into family farms, nor greenspace on corporate campuses into mini farms. We do not need to fill wetlands nor dike up new lands.

We do not even need a single acre of land honestly... but I will share that soon.

The land we caan use is appropriate for farming Federally owned lands.

But I did say we do not need more acres.

How about we end ethanol and the national cheese and dairy buyout programs (Where the cheese rots in warehouses to keep prices up...)

Oh and fixing logistics issues could add 5% as well.

Reducing wasteful practices could also add 10%....

Re: Food Shortage? Hahahahahahahaha!

Flint,

Fair enough. I am the biggest hater of ethanol subsidies... It causes so much damage to both the environment and economy... Additionally, government buyouts of crops, like you say, have departed so far from their original purpose that it's become blatant price manipulation. Moreover, the price manipulation of US crops has angered many of our trade partners. It's a liability on so many levels.

If that nonsense ended, I agree, there would be a lot less hunger.
