Topic: Of Darkness and Rocks, Sign up and OOC

Ok, for a while now I've wanted to have another dedicated 'Space' roleplay, but everything I think of ends up turning 'Space: The Story'esque''. So I have decided on something and this is it. Each player has one ship, what ever they choose but only one. At the start of the story, every players ship jumps to a system(explained soon) and are unable to jump out of the system(Intra-system jumps can be done). For every player's race, it is an unexplored system in the far edge of the galaxy in a vastly unexplored sector.

The only rules are: No "Higher Power Intervention", only technology within reasonable reach of human development at our current development.

The system we will jump into has a massive blue supergiant as the main star, and a regular 'sun' like star orbiting in a far orbit, about twice as far as Pluto. This system has a wide asteroid belt twice as wide as the one between Mars and Jupiter, and it has another even furthur out past the yellow star four times as wide as the Oort cloud. It doesn't have a set amount of planets. Alot of the asteroids are comprised of important materials.

Then I lived.

Re: Of Darkness and Rocks, Sign up and OOC

My Bio:(Most of my stuff will be based off Battlestar Galactica)

Base-Ship Carrier: Deliverence.
Dimensions: 1500 metres long, 300 metres tall and 500 metres wide. Shaped similarly to Galactica, but the flight pods are futhur back and don't retract. It has a heavily armoured top half and a slightly less armoured bottom half with a slight indent through the middle. Fighters deploy through nine launch tunnels at the very front. It has four massive engines with two on the top and two on the bottom. At the very back, Deliverence has a hydroponics dome, 250 metres tall and 200 metres wide.(Situated sideways on the back, between the engines and the flight pods.)
Weapon loadouts: four quad-cannon batteries, two situatated on top at the front and two at the back. All four have full firing range at the top of the ship. They fire 5" shells at a fire rate of 100 rounds per minute, per battery. Two twin-batteries, same profile as above, with one at each end on the bottom. Two main forward mounted batteries, under the top half of the ship, in the indent. They fire 20" explosive shells at 15 shells a minute. 60 high velocity, light weight rail guns, firing 1.5" armour piercing rounds at a rate of 300 rounds per minute. Four misille bays, spaced in between the armoured halves, capable of firing eight missiles simultaneously, or four nuclear warheads.
66 dedicated space fighters and 20 bombers, which double up as transports and recon ships.
Deliverence has a crew 1,900, with 88 space fighter pilots and 60 bomber pilots, (bombers need two pilots, think of a raptor from BSG.) 100 ground walkers, three meters tall, house one person, used for ground combat. Has a twin-machine gun, with a combined fire rate of 650 rounds a minute, and fires 1" bullets. Also house a multiple missile launcher which can fire three missiles at once. Deliverence has three manufacturing 'houses' with which they can construct everything they need on board, with the exception of high yield nukes, engines and armour plates. Basically the Deliverence is made for extended stays away from home.

Then I lived.

Re: Of Darkness and Rocks, Sign up and OOC

Long time no see, Wolves. smile

Designation: RXR Richard P. Feynman.
Type Class: Mobile science platform, medium size.
Dimensions: 120 m long, 60 m tall, 75 m wide.
Mass: 75,000 metric tons.
Onboard facilities: one sickbay, two research laboratories, one hangar bay 50x50x30 meters open to space with construction and repair equipment, one life-support system and hydroponics facility sufficient to support a crew of 120 indefinitely.
Engineering: one compact fusion reactor, 2000 MW output; six hypertech ion thrusters with total output 250 kN, 1200 MW power consumption while active; one experimental short-range jump drive (range 25 AU); array of maneuvering thrusters.
Sensors: full array of passive and active electromagnetic sensors.
Weapons: two experimental particle-beam turrets, effective range 500 km; one capital-ship missile launcher, effective range 101,325 km, 20-round magazine.
Crew: 20-man science team, 60-man support staff, 10 marines.

Docked vessels: one atmospheric scientific shuttlecraft, 20 meter length, serviced by hangar bay; ten fighter drones, docked to external ports on hull.

The trouble with realistic spaceflight is you either pack expensive and massive propellant and then have to solve the rocket equation, or you use ion propulsion and it takes you a week to accelerate by 500 meters per second. But we'll deal.

Also, the language of my species is unintelligible to any unknown species without telepathy, and the strange mental structure gives telepaths severe headaches. When I speak of things in OOC culture, I'm really referring to analogous people, ideas, places, or events in my species' knowledge; for instance, the Feynman is really named after a prominent and well-respected scientist of my species responsible for advancements in physics of similar importance to Feynman's contributions to our own knowledge, but whose name would be inexpressible in our language.

Those five planets were only what my ship could detect without the interference from the superstar, meaning there could be more 'on the otherside'.

Re: Of Darkness and Rocks, Sign up and OOC

Woops.  I posted in your roleplay thread, when I should have posted here:

@Wolves of Fenris:

Hmm... nice dialogue...

Dialogue isn't my forte.  Would you like to work on a project together?  The project is a legend for IC.  I would give you the characters to write about and the context for their dialogue.  Interested?  Hope to publish it, thereby launching IC to the next level, and make money for us all.

Re: Of Darkness and Rocks, Sign up and OOC

Oh, adn Hi Chaosdarkmech!  How's it going?  I didn't know you were still on IC forums.  It's been years, I think...

Re: Of Darkness and Rocks, Sign up and OOC

Xeno, I'm not particularly good with dialogue, but give me some names, context and what you need to be done and I'll see what I can do.

As you can read, the Deliverences radar isn't able to scan the whole system, or even more then a fraction, it's pretty limited, they rely On their fighters and transport/bombers. Also my people are highly hostile towards anything or anyone who isn't their own. They may not fire at first sight, but that won't stop them fighting after. They could be xenophobic, or even 'anyoneoutsideoftheirownsystemphobic'

Then I lived.

go collect waste Matthias.

i will do what i must to remain here

Re: Of Darkness and Rocks, Sign up and OOC

Part of the plan, of course.

I was bored and came up with a 3d model of the Feynman:

I'm guessing your capital ship missile launches and travels alot faster then a regular rocket guided missile?

Re: Of Darkness and Rocks, Sign up and OOC

An electromagnetic launch system propels each missile out of its own launch tube at something like 5 km/s relative velocity. Each missile has a cache of onboard fuel that can maneuver the missile to track a relatively sedentary target for a flight distance of 101,325 km, or provide continuous acceleration at a rate of about 300 m/s^2 over at least 6,000 km, attaining a maximum additional speed of at least 60 km/s over this interval. The missile can be set to remain armed and deadly even when its fuel runs out for ultra-long-range engagements against fortified and predictable targets, or can be set to disable itself after a predetermined interval; the setting is burned into the guidance circuitry at launch. Damage is done by a combination of hypervelocity impact and initiation of onboard fission device, causing severe kinetic and thermal effects to target.

Firing the entire magazine at once at point-blank is a viable strategy that would make a Caldari commander proud.

This is a science vessel, so the commander is trained to use deadly force against intelligent targets as a last resort; occasionally, though, large amounts of force are required for legitimate purposes like astrogeological studies, where it is occasionally required to make large amounts of rock disassociate rapidly.

Additionally, because it is hard to fit an autoloader for large missiles on a small ship, spent missiles must be reloaded out of combat, usually at a spacedock.

Re: Of Darkness and Rocks, Sign up and OOC

Designation: Escape pod.
Type Class: Emergency escape shuttle.
Dimensions: 4m long, 2m high, 2m wide
Mass: 35 metric tons.
Onboard facilities: a seat with builtin toilet, life support and etc.
Engineering: solar panels + super compact diesel engine (for the initial push and maneuverability). Ion boosters, small maneuverability thrusters, wormhole creation weapon (never been tested).
Sensors: None.
Weapons: One revolver. One bullet. The ship is too small to be detected by any sort of radar. Its painted black, and cant be seen with the naked eye.
Crew: Me. Summer Glau would have been invited, but there wasn't enough room and her agent declined.

I am sKoE
Do you know what the chain of command is here? It's the chain I go get and beat you with to show you who's in command.

Re: Of Darkness and Rocks, Sign up and OOC

*looks up* You're move. If you fire, the Deliverence can take the missile, it would hurt though. I have a good idea for an epic and fun battle between my ground walkers and your science vessel. It involves an asteroid belt, and the air tightening of the ground walkers... Now it's up to youto get us to that point tongue also, how has it been for you, mr algebra?

Re: Of Darkness and Rocks, Sign up and OOC

Let's try this:

Character sketch / context:  Xeno Syndicate Special Operative, clone named Lo2478 (number represents how many generations or how many copies of copies of clone it was from which he was cloned).  His task is to infiltrate the Xentia Faction and report back to the Xeno Syndicate high command what he has discovered about the rebellion in the Pinwheel Galaxy.   He is currently in a bar on a planet somewhere, discussing with a Xentia operative who will disclose nothing, not even his name.  All he wants is money, explaining the Xentia do not trust the Xeno Syndicate and requests proof of their loyalty.  The Xeno Syndicate operative doesn't know if this guy is really a member of the Xentia Faction and wants proof.  They agree to arrange for a funds transfer via the galactic market: a certain price of goods to be placed on market at certain time, the amounts, etc., are negotiated, and then agreed upon.  The Xeno Syndicate operative asks how this is not breaking the Xentia Code, and the so called Xenti Operative is exposed as a fraud, for it is clear he doesn't know the Xentia Code.  The Xeno Syndicate operative kills the so called Xentia operative and escapes.

Re: Of Darkness and Rocks, Sign up and OOC

Xeno, I'll see what I can do, first up I'm writing my next part to this, then I'll do the 'meeting'.

Algabra, basically the Feynman is seeing two Deliverences, with the time lag. The further one out would be doing the prep to jump while the closer one will be sending fighters etc. That gives thought to a nice phsyocological weapon, if someone could fall for it. Just park your ship at say 10 au's then keep jumping and by the time you get closer, as long as you time it right, you keep give the impression that a system is actually full of warships. Just a thought.

Then I lived.

Re: Of Darkness and Rocks, Sign up and OOC

My communications work through sending a message in the same way that the ships jump, and from there the 'radio waves frequency thingy' spreads from there. It is a lot more accurate then a ships jump, as it is just a tiny tiny thing to 'jump'.
Also, I hate Earth, so you earth lover beware!!!! Mwahahaha, be prepared for attempted genocide, Mwahahaha!

Then I lived.

Re: Of Darkness and Rocks, Sign up and OOC

So, some misunderstandings have to be resolved.

- We're not actually Terrans. I write from a Terran perspective as a convenient abstraction, as I tried to explain in post #2 of this thread. My intent is to try to capture the 'feel' of the situation in a way the human reader can understand, not provide a completely literal view of events. I tried to hint at this when I called Sol a 'reddish-orange' star, which our OOC Sun is in fact not.
- We're completely unintelligible to any other sentient race; communication is actually impossible.
- The Gray code doesn't encode any data or message; it simply cycles through all 2^n possible values for an n-bit pattern in such a way that only a single bit changes from pattern to pattern. All your communications officer would pick up would be a rapidly cycling stream of bits that don't really mean anything.

It would be an interesting idea, though, if the communications officer was faking reports for his own purposes.

I will proceed as if events have led the Deliverance to engage the Feynman.

Re: Of Darkness and Rocks, Sign up and OOC

Feel free to tell me to revise the range of engagement if you like. This is what happens if you jump directly on top of the Feynman - I interpret that as jumping to 20.

Re: Of Darkness and Rocks, Sign up and OOC

Sorry, didn't mean to destroy your ship, I thought you would just fix the drive and jump away... You can change it if you like, I have plans that can fit with both choices.

Then I lived.

Re: Of Darkness and Rocks, Sign up and OOC

And Xeno, I have the main points of the meeting, just gotta write it out. Should be up hopefully tomozers, or the day after.

Then I lived.

Re: Of Darkness and Rocks, Sign up and OOC

I rather think I like firing twenty capital ship missiles at some unsuspecting dreadnought tongue

and fixing jumpdrives is a hard problem
