Topic: My contact with OccupyPortland....

Well I went on an education rampage yesterday... still fired up from it today and about to finally go to bed.

I would call it a minor success. Those online were definitely changing the rhetoric and tone as I talked with them. I discussed the few things they could find Conservatives and Tea Party types agreeing with them if they pursued it. I explained socialism in easy terms and how it cannot work...

And all in almost Twitter sized posts.

Comments included as such:

How to get Tea Party to agree: 1) End Fed 2) Make them hold a stock bought for 24 hours before sell/trade 3) End ALL payments by Fed Govt to Corporations for ANYTHING, including Solar, Bailouts, etc.

Mentioned how CEO's of companies getting subsidies by Government for green projects have used the influx to sell stock at suddenly inflated prices (due to subsidy) and get 10's of millions...

Mentioned how Apple is a success story of a good CEO who earned his pay, and how there is good and bad CEO's.

Used Google as example of a company which would not do anything but search engines and advertising  on their website if not for Stock Market.

Talked how if 100 million people wanted to shake Obama's hand it would take (100000000/365/24/60/6 (assuming 10 seconds per handshake, and no rest) years for him to shake all those hands, and this is why we have Capitalism... fairness cannot happen for all.

Covered how you can have equal opportunity, but not equal outcomes. Example included how people might love to live in Portland, but we cannot support most of the world. Also how there is regional food differences.

I even noted for them, since they seemed to try to ignore it, the manipulation by Mayor Sam Adams, who had choices of MANY parks (and other spaces commonly used for public events) but chose instead to place them at two specific parks that are going to be used by the Portland Marathon tomorrow (Requiring them all to move... btw Portland has the Largest City owned Park, the Most Acres of City owned Parks, and the Smallest City owned Park in the world. There are so many places they could have been placed).

Totally owned by the Mayor who wishes to be seen supporting them, and yet wants to kick their asses out of here and back home asap! And they do not care it seems, lol. Always love the D's and hate the R's... If I was Mayor and did that stunt, lol... I would NEVER hear the end of that one! LOL!

Everything bad in the economy is now Obama's fault. Every job lost, all the debt, all the lost retirement funds. All Obama. Are you happy now? We all get to blame Obama!

Re: My contact with OccupyPortland....

I just googled OccupyPortland and it looks like the occupation protest in Portland and other places in the USA is largely about corporate influence in government stemming from the dependence of political candidates on financial support from corporations and the support of the media. I'm not sure if this is a correct interpretation or not, but it sounds like a good thing to protest about and an important thing to change.

The problem I often have with protest movements though is that it is easy to say what you are against and much more difficult to say what you are for. What is the solution to the problem of corporate influence on politics (not just in the USA but anywhere)? What are the protesters saying they want to replace the current system and how would they stop the same problems happening again?

Re: My contact with OccupyPortland....

more like they are upset with the lobbying system and corporate greed is the meme I detect.

They call themselves the 99%... as in the 1% earns more than the rest of the 99% by far kind of deal.

They do not like this, more of a communism sort of rising than real change... but I am able to get through a bit.

LOTS of mentions of Koch, and no worries about Soro's means this group is DEFINITELY a one sided Democrat affair... Which dooms it.

Koch brothers after all only got into politics after Obama was elected, and only after Obama started crippling a LOT of businesses (For instance his regulations on trucking will cost 100k drivers their jobs)

Re: My contact with OccupyPortland....

Nope.  We're just fed up with our lives being influenced by Wall Street, even though we all don't own any damn stock.

Why should my life have the pain of some corporate gaining or losing points on the stock market?  It shouldn't.

And that my friends is what the occupations are about.  We want our lives not controlled by corporate greed.  Because it's starting to look like all the housing foreclosures, and all the job losses, are directly related to corporate greed and mistakes.

Quite a few of those occupiers....were layed off.  They don't have jobs.  Some are living off food stamps, and soup kitchens.

And Einstein, they are the 99%.  They are the poor.  They are the wretched.   There's like 99% middle class and poor americans.  and 1% rich assed tightwads?

Re: My contact with OccupyPortland....

if they are all like this, they are the weak. I don't know if you can stand 11 mins of this but it is most instructive.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=3QZlp3eGMNI

Bullhorn guy has made them repeat everything they hear on the bullhorn, and shut up and wave hand signals

Bullhorn guy has been approached about letting a Congressman speak.  Bullhorn guy does not want the Congressman to speak.

Bullhorn guy takes  a comment from "the Block?" to send the Congressman away. That seems to be popular and Bullhorn guy proclaims consensus.

There is dissent.  Bullhorn man takes a comment in favor of the address, and one against it, and calls for a poll.  The crowd seems divided.

Recognizing the crowd is divided, Bullhorn man decides that the option he put to a vote a few minutes before (shut up Congressman) is in fact the DEFAULT, and the opponents have failed to build consensus against it. That's why I say he wanted it.

Bullhorn man then shuts down everybody rising to speak on the issue, and instead of hearing them, berates them for ignoring the democracy they approved by an earlier vote--they are betraying democracy by speaking their minds!

That's why I find this instructive, there's no money changing hands, no social influence, no coercion, just one slick asshole with a bullhorn who gets them to agree, in the name of democracy, to repeat everything he says and shut up by order.  Has any corporation ever got you doing that?

Re: My contact with OccupyPortland....

There are leaders... Organizers... and they are being paid to protest according to sources. They are coordinating the masses in manners that they are trained in for a long time.

I could easily go out to these places in disguise, and in 2 hours have every one of them identified.

Re: My contact with OccupyPortland....

According to sources, is not a valid arguement.  Whose the sources?  Members of Wall Street?  If the sources don't wish to be known, then I do not consider it valid information.  And you should know better than that.

Re: My contact with OccupyPortland....

right, the fact that they had banners and crap, and people were filmed talking about this for a year or so, and they all have the same name of OCCUPY X, that's just all coincidence to the REAL STORY
