first of all, alot of southerners fought for the north and alot of northerners fought for the south, it wasnt slavery vs. freedom for every man like liberals want you to believe. it was a tyrant forcing federalism over states rights. outlawing slavery in the rebelling states was just a way for Lincoln to cripple their economy to punish the south. He was no saint.
hmmm.... Ok I will assume you think livestock feeds off of grass lands.
Most of the farm land is used to raise food for the livestock. Feed grain/corn and soy make up the bulk of animal feed.
"Pasture" means its not being farmed. I COULD be used to let maybe milk cows wander about.
But, animals to be slaughtered are not wandering about the country side. They are in controlled pens, on a controlled diet, getting nice a fat.
Makes for a nice marbled steak.

Not all pasture land can be converted to cropland either.

Actually the slave states sued to the Supreme Court to ensure that every state, whether it wanted to or not, accepted slaves as chattel property of their masters. That was the Dred Scott ruling that invalidated the Missouri Compromise of 1850

learn history. Dred Scott was the slave and was the plaintiff. and he tried to "sue" his slavemaster, not a state or all the southern states. the southern states did not have any power over the ruling. it was purely supreme court.

Yet, many here, YELL being from one of the largest farm states in the US, and I am telling you is that Land is kept UNFARMED to keep the prices of food at an economic controlled inflated number, so Farmers can make a living.
Your frozen tundra to the north is kept unfarmed as well, for the same reason.

You're right about the parties. However, the legal principle was that a free state had no authority over property in another state; and that when property in one state was moved to a different state, it must remain property everywhere in the United States. That is hardly an affirmation of states rights over federal encroachment. The situation Lincoln stepped into was already a boiling cauldron of resentment at the Federal authority denying any Northern or western community the right to oppose slavery.
