if u always think mods r abusing their powers, for their own benifit, i suggest we take crappy players to be mod! they suck never get accused off faul play.
read: mods shouldnt be playing in the galaxy their modding. this to remove all bad thinking peops in general have to figures of power (politics annyone?) besides wouldnt this be a way to get teh fun back to the mods? they cant get yelled on pritty much. when not playin in a gal it should be possible to them doing the job with the info they see on their mod screens. (perhaps an idea, to bleep out all player/fam names. so the mods cant be influenced by personal friendships (not saying mods doing that on purpose, but studys proven that unconsciously people stil r bias to or for a person)
so time to get some shitload of coding to do!!!
The one issue with not allowing the mods to play in the galaxies they are modding is that we only have 2 1/2 galaxies left. Also if you limit them to not play at all, unless they are someone very observant of conversations in irc and in the forums you would be left out of the loop on what changes would have to be made.
Need to find the balance of keeping mods in the loop with the game, and not too sucked into the game that they feel they need to abuse their powers.
I abuse my powers all the time but I still suck....

a mod needs to play the game. Period. They dont need to play in every galaxy. You cant effectively gauge changes and the atmosphere unless your in the thick of things with the other players.
Its not about mods playing or not playing. Its about finding mods that are qualified and are known to be honest. Its about strength of character and principles.
What about mods are voted about the ideas they have?
And re-elected according to what they have done?
Becomes a popularity contest with that and as much as people think it should, thats not a good way to determine a mod. Look at whats its gotten us =p A whole bunch of inactive mods that don't actually know game mechanics to come up with ideas to change things.
what can a mod do? very little to affect gameplay tbh in such way we all give him a applause for it.
aye i understand my idea is a bit off with the fact we have so fwew galaxys left, but perhaps it was one of the reasons so manny stopped playing. give them a reason to come back! gotta start somewhere.
smaller gals, shorter rounds more start resources, give people more chance to redo their mistakes, less reason to delete if they make a mistake. more times u can brag u won a round. just handing them more explo ships, stil benifits the 'by default' top fam more then the inactive buggers.
shorter rounds, smaller gals, more gals, more rounds on year basis. then u give the mods work to do and if u give people more galaxys to play in (and not just the one if ur normal member) well have more gameplay overal.
We need mods with actual gaming experience. I know alot of you have heard this before, but.... ive been playing and running roleplaying games, strategy games and other games for over 25 years now. Ive ran Battletech and Dungeons and Dragons at huge gaming conventions that were quite successful.
I know Dungeons and Dragons isnt IC, however....ive created my own worlds, races and character classes within those game rules. I understand game balance and the concept of metagaming. Im an uber nerd. I cant even begin to list all the different games ive played over the past 25 years. Im not talkin about video games either. Anyone can pick up a playstation controller and turn on the power ![]()
Let me explain a bit of my thought process.
Firstly, a lot of the work is indeed stuff people never see. But like arsy said, most importantly is the link the community needs with the Mod team. We need direction, else we're all loke headless chooks, with ppl dropping off and numbers dwindling. There have been a few mods in the past (eg, Nolio) who were really in touch with the player base. That is sorely needed.
Now, let me explain my choices...
Primo - Retain. Regardless of what ppl say, for now he does have a 'senior' type role. No existing mod can fulfil this role, and Primo does do a good job.
Thirdrock - TR is smart and could potentially be groomed to take on a bit more of a senior role. He puts in some balance. Granted he was inactive for a bit, but he's back now.
Mizzle - He does a lot of background work and is generally liked by the community. Mods need to be like this.
^ Thats for the existing.
Whiteshadow - Great game knowledge. Mods NEED to have this to help bring in things they think would be right.
Hardcore4eva - Usually is quite an ass, but more often than not, he's just being frank. At this time not many know more about the game, and more impotantly, he does bring in good ideas that can help the direction of IC. This too, is sorely needed.
AA - AA can be very eccentric. He's really passionate about the game and passionate to keep it going. He has radical ideas. Some good, some not so good. the not so good ones will be filtered through by my other suggestions, cos they know the game well. Either way, AA is the type of person who incites the motivation to change. This is key and also needed.
Broker - One of the quiet ones if you don't know him. But again, this guys game knowledge is awesome. he knows how the game works.
Genesis - should have been modded a while back. Knows hell of a lot abt the game and is very sociable too. Ppl need him to be in touch with wha the community wants.
Basically a mix of ppl there, but together they eliminate any individual flaws and could complement each other well.
There could be others that would work better too, but right now you don't need half the players as mods ![]()
Imo, there hasnt been a better time to mod. Why? Because ppl want change and you have the right to try to bring it. Mix this in with having Ps, who definitely can bring the changes(eg sd market awesome!). Ofcourse any change needs tweaks, but the fact he can do em, is brilliant for ic.
Exciting times ahead!
