Topic: Plugging A Laptop into A Monitor

I'm having a bit of difficulty with my laptop atm.

Basically, the screen died.

I took it to a guy I know called Gamyboy Paul, And he had a look at it and said it had unrepairable water damage, (due to listening to music in the shower - so folk that do that, stop it tongue)

he did say that I could just plug in a monitor, which I'm doing now.
but for some reason, Sometimes it doesn't turn on, it gets to the choose user screen , then turns off and the standby light on the monitor just flashes, and when I take the cable out it says no signal.

If I re-start and go into safe mode, It works fine, but I can't go on the internet, so I'm mucking about for ages changing the settings randomly, and restarting, sometimes it works, but other times it doesn't.

does anybody have any idea whats actually happening here?

Re: Plugging A Laptop into A Monitor

I sometimes use an HDMI cable to connect my laptop to a tv screen, maybe something like that to connect it to a monitor?

Worked perfectly for me right away, didn't have to configure anything.

When it gets the user screen and turns off try pressing Fn F5 or Fn F8. There should be an icon on one of the F keys that turns the external signal on and off. It's F5 for IBMs and F8 for Dells. I don't know about others

Re: Plugging A Laptop into A Monitor

cool, Well the monitor I'm using atm doesn't have a 2 way cable, its attached already to the back of my monitor and just plugs into my laptop.

I tried a 2way generic monitor cable on the my tv and that still doesn't work.

I'll try using a different type of cable, but dont have one in my house atm.
Any other suggestions until I can aquire one?

---Edit---

hmm, what does the button look like?

the only 2 F keys I can't work out are, like a white rectangle with a blank square with a line through it and a blank rectangle with a line down each side

Re: Plugging A Laptop into A Monitor

What kind of laptop do you have?

I think the blank square with a line through it is to disable/enable your touchpad

Is the other key the F2 or F4 Key? I have two HP laptops with me that have the same symbol. That symbol should be the one to switch your video to an external source and/or turn it on for both the laptop display and the external (depending how many time you press it)
