Re: Road trip through America

Everything Stone Cold said is complete non-sense. Well not entirely, but he is exaggerating the cost a bit... Don't sleep in major cities unless it is your last option, and mention some specific cities so i can tell you how safe they are wink

I would recommend 4-5k for money.  (including flight)
Search Trip advisor and Orbitz for decent deals. also, try avoiding California as it is expensive as hell. Coming from NZ your tendency would be to fly to LA, if you can get a slightly more expensive flight to another city and rent a car from there and stuff, i would recommend it.

You can stay at a hotel for like 50-60 dollars a night. Some hotels to look into (and i would book in advance!) are Microtel, Motel 6, Econolodge, and sometimes Best Western. These won't be lavish accomodations but they will be good clean private places to sleep and sometimes a free breakfast (although the breakfast is usually nothing exciting)

Gas varies like crazy. keep in mind, to drive one way across the US takes well over 2 days, and that is not including time to stop and sleep. so it really depends what cities and states you would like to see. Gas where I live now is only $3.40 a gallon, back home in the Northeastern corner it is well over $4. in California it could be close to $5.   Likewise, the price to rent a car varies like crazy, I work at a car rental company in rural Virginia, and it is only $200 a week to rent. California will cost over $500 a week, and ofcourse this all varies on how many miles a day you are driving, if u get unlimited miles, insurance, etc...

One thing i will definitely advice against is taking the public trains, unlike in Europe, u cannot get to very many cities by train unless you follow the Pacific or Atlantic coasts. besides: coverage is spotty at best, and trains here are expensive and always late. No American uses the train to get anywhere far away unless they are stupid. Another idea, Bus companies are much cheaper, you have to run on their schedule which sucks, but it is much cheaper than train or car.

I hope i have helped you! Also, a word to the wise, stay out of places like Alabama or West Virginia or Wyoming.   People there are uneducated hillbillies who will assume you're a terrorist because your family is of Pakistani descent. Especially after catching Osama in Pakistan recently...

Hope this helps.

you can also use tormenta for storm, huracan for hurricane, inundacion for flood, sequia for drought, marejada for surge, terremoto for earthquake, vaticano for childabuse, etc...

it is based off the fact that Mexico used to own the Southwestern United States before we kicked their asses out. During the Spanish quest to explore the interior of the  US they came across a crap load of Tornadoes. Hence the name...

Re: Road trip through America

I'm doing this trip next month! big_smile

Unfortunately, we're going west coast through Cali so expecting to spend a lot....

Our itinerary is:
- San Francisco (pick up car)
- Los Angeles
- San Diego
- Las Vegas
- Grand Canyon
- Yosemite National Park
- San Francisco (drop off car and fly back to London)

Necessary stuff (between 3 of us, over 20 days):
3x Return flights US$3000 ... really expensive but going during the middle of summer so expected...
Car hire US$700 ... for 16 days, nice car but not convertible sad
19 nights in hotels US$1000 ... all Holiday Inns except Vegas and LA where we're splashing out a bit
Gas US$450 ... based on 2000 mile round trip, 20mpg car and $4.5 per gallon. Depends on where we fill up and how good the car is.

And all that doesn't include spending money or food and drink (which there'll be plenty of!).

Atm thinking of budgeting around $150 per day spending. That includes days we plan to lie on the beach and nights of gambling in Vegas so will up and down quite a lot.

Total trip is going to cost us between $4-5k each we think. Damn... and the US still make us pay for a tourist visa to enter the country...

Tips:
- Decide on what your overall budget is and then figure out where you can go from there. Make sure you stick to your budget when planning as its really easy to go wild.
- Do your research! Cost of hotels, things to do, car hire, petrol, food, drink all add up!
- Ideally fly in and out of the same city. We were originally thinking of east coast (Florida to New York) but that worked out wayyyyy too expensive getting 2 single flights.
- If you have a car, you don't necessarily have to stay in the centre of the city. We're staying out near Santa Monica in LA as its slightly cheaper and you pretty much have to drive to get places in LA anyway.
- As Emo said, you really do need to travel by car rather than public transport. A lot more convenient.

Have fun planning! Hope this helps.

Re: Road trip through America

damn that's a lot of driving!
remember to drink a lot of water because it's a dry heat, you'll be sweating it off without even noticing.  Also I know in California and I think everywhere else by law a restaurant has to give you free water to drink

what day are you in LA - san diego?  I'm in Riverside  and I work in Orange county so I will be within 100 miles of you at some point

Re: Road trip through America

Arsy.
i assume 3000 is round trip and the cost for all 3 people?

because if u are paying $3000 per person to get a round trip ticket to California from England, then you're getting taken advantage of yikes

Re: Road trip through America

i'd like to buy you a meal arsy

if you werent' driving so much I'd take you to a pizza parlor and show you the proper way to drink American beer: by the pitcher

but since you'll be in a car all day, it's probably not prudent

when do you plan to be in Los Angeles? you're in SD midweek so I can't drive out there hmm

"Bumpass Hell is the largest concentration of hydrothermal features in the park.  Bumpass Hell was named after an early settler who severly burned a leg after falling into a boiling pool.  The hydrothermal features can be reached today from a well-marked 1.5 mile trail that starts from a parking area opposite Lake Helen.  A visit to Lassen is not complete without a stop at Bumpass Hell.

...Bumpass Hell is the largest hydrothermal area in the park, and marks the principal area of upflow of steam and discharge from the Lassen hydrothermal system (see illustration in photo gallery below). The temperature of high-velocity steam jetting from Big Boiler, the largest fumarole in the park, has been measured as high as 322
