Topic: Laptop took a dump

Alright all you computer savvy nerdfolk.

So as I was working on an online course I have to take before I get started in the real world, my laptop randomly decided that it was going to lock up, and then shut itself down moments later.  Now it won't start up at all.  When I run the start up diagnostic thingy it informs me that it can't self repair the issue and blah blah blah all that other stuff that would be useful to you if I could copy/paste it somehow.  Basically there is something up with my c drive.

What are my options?

Does it make loud clicking sounds when you try to turn it on?

Re: Laptop took a dump

hit it with a hammer.

if that fails, get a bigger hammer!

Re: Laptop took a dump

When you turn it on and see the Laptop maker's bios splash screen hit F8 repeatedly. Then choose last known good configuration

if that fails do the F8 and try safe mode

Re: Laptop took a dump

Don't throw your hard drive out. As long as it's a SATA Hard Drive you can take it to someone with a tower PC and plug it into their system or use an external sata to usb converter. You should be able to grab any of your documents from it (especially if it's not the hard drive thats the problem). At least if your lucky enough to have it still work.

I worked on a lady's laptop that was dropped and the hard drive didn't show up. I got it working enough using a Vista recovery disc to be recognized in windows and then i could get the files off. Was a pain. If it doesn't show up in windows you could try using ubuntu and seeing if that sees it. its a little less demanding of partitions then windows.

If your using Vista... You deserve anything that happens to you... tongue I assume it's Vista or Windows 7. The auto recovery options have never worked for me for either. So useless.

At least laptop hard drives are pretty inexpensive. Can get a 160-500GB drive for $40-60. Or grab an intel SSD tongue I talked my work into letting me get a 40GB intel SSD and load XP on it. It's sick (make sure to align it properly before installing) If your putting windows 7 on you will want a larger size. XP only takes up 14GB's with all updates and programs installed. Win7 takes 16GB at least just for the initial install X(

Try the F8 options i said in the earlier post first

Re: Laptop took a dump

Tried, doesn't work.  See I've never messed with putting in or removing a hard drive so I'm trying to figure that shit out, which would be easy if I had immediate access to google....which not having a laptop means i don't have sad

Take out the battery,  take out the power lead,  press and hold power button for 30 seconds,  put the power lead back in, turn it on, then put the battery back in.

Hiren's boot CD. It has some good partition tools with it. Try rebuilding your partition table.

Hirens boot disk is a godsend

Re: Laptop took a dump

by any means can you hear your hard drive spinning when your laptop is on?

Re: Laptop took a dump

A tip for backing up your data in this sort of situation.  If you have access to another PC (you clearly do!) which has a CD writer, download an iso of a Linux distribution, .e.g Ubuntu (http://www.ubuntu.com/), Fedora (http://fedoraproject.org/), openSuSE (http://www.opensuse.org/en/) or something similar.   Burn this to CD.  Ensure your computer is set to boot from CD before (any of) your internal hard drive(s) (this can be set within the BIOS - to access the BIOS screen you may need to hit delete, F1, F2 or some other key depending on your BIOS).  You will then boot the Linux distribution as a "live session" straight from the CD.  From this live session you will be able to access your internal hard drive(s) so you can save your data, files and important stuff to either an external hard drive (if you have one), USB keys, or burn them to blank CDs/DVDs using burning software which comes with the Live CD session.

If, however, the Live CD session cannot properly read and access your internal hard drive, then that means your hard drive is knackered.

Re: Laptop took a dump

Stop downloading porn from porn sites that have virus'.

You has a battery problem, end of story.  It's a physical problem, not a programming problem.  The only other explanation is that the fan motor has shutdown or the system has overheated to the point where the circuit board took some heat damage.

Good luck.

I suppose you could have a bunny rabbit, replicating to all memory areas to the point that your hard drive is now so full of "information" it can no longer function.  Now before the brainiacs start scoffing at the idea, yes a rabbit virus can do that, has done it.  How do i Know, because I USED the damn prog before in front of a class full of "Moronic Brainiacs" to simulate what the hell a rabbit virus can do to computers.  Seriously.

Ok.  Battery.  Heat.  Virus.  One of the three, and any of the three, your going to have to take to a computer shop.
