When the stock market goes down it goes down fast and sharp, with little to no warning.  When the stocks go up, it's a slow incline over a longer period of time.  There is no sharp upward trend from what i've seen over the past 25 years.

Still.  Go with IRA's and bonds.  It will take longer to earn full dividends, but it's less riskier than losing all your money on stocks when the crap hits the fan. 

You want to get into stocks?  Try computer graphics.  A lot of the technology market is moving away from memory and going back to visual.  Remember when 3D video cards for computers came out, and everyone started investing into NVIDIA and the GEOforce?  Well it's starting to rev up again.
