Okay. Could most western buildings in earthquake areas ie Los Angeles (California) withstand a 7.9 earthquake?

I don't know if you're a building inspector and don't really care either. I find it very strange that you think people should know about you on a generally accepted anonymous environment like the internet. You don't need to be a building inspector to say "I don't know" or simply leave the question to someone else.

Well they wouldn't be total piles of debris like the World Trade Center.  However at the epicenter many would be broken, and if half your floor moves a foot to the north and the other half stays put, that pretty much means your house has to be torn down, and there would be a lot of that.  A mere 6.4 Richter (which is obsolete measurement btw) can bend a railroad track into an s-curve.

that sort of damage to foundations, sewer and gas and plumbing, and so forth would "wreck" many homes without killing anybody.

And I wear a pocket protector and a tie with a policeman's steel tieclasp, so yes, I do look like a building inspector!!

smaller earthquakes are ussally just less area that moves... but still it moves...

yeah richter is obsolte... but thats why you use moment magnitude wink
or surface wave magnitude.

btw the 7.9 are moment magnitude
i have no clue how big the eqrthquake in china was on the richter scala

the chances of someone here being qualified to accurately answer that question is very small. so small, it would make sense to first ask if anyone is a building inspector in a seismically active area in a first world country. because most people wont say "i dont know" they'll give you a bs answer pretending that they know.
