Topic: Eve Online: The Gallente Caldari War

He was my friend, my best friend, and in many ways he still is.  We always played Gallente Caldari war from we were kids.  I would be Caldari and he'd be Gallente.  The causes of the war always varied but they usually lead to the absolute destruction of one of the two worlds.  Had I known that our games would become a reality I would have paid more attention to them.  Kids games, heh.

I was one of the early second generation Gallente growing up on Caldari Prime.  He was the son of Caldari workers but the Gallente Integration program ensured that we interacted with all strata of society.  Little did I realize our sole purpose was to understand the Caldari so we could dominate them.  It was a mixed blessing to have another colony this in the same solar system as the Gallente homeworld but the Gallente quickly saw the potential for them to be come rivals, and hence the seeds for the current conflict was spawned.  I grew to became and admiral and so did my friend, my best friend, my current enemy and opponent.

Re: Eve Online: The Gallente Caldari War

You are going to win, they had said to me matter of factly, as if any other outcome would be impossible.

I still can't believe how far we've come, how foolish people can be and how much weight they put on our shoulders, its preposterous really. The Gallente warmachine spins at full speed while some corps on our side are still not going all out, biding their time to see if they can't switch sides and come out on top after all of this is over. I hate them, I hate everyone that stands against our interests....Everyone but him...

"Heeeeeeeeeeeeyyy! Why don't you come out to plaaaaay?" A young boy called out to an open window. "Mommy says I need to study for school." Another kid said as a chair moved across the balcony and the kid popped up on it, looking down to his friend. "You're just afraid you're going to lose again." One teased the other. "I'm not going to lose!" The other said frowning. "You are if you don't come down here."
/
"..eral? General? Are you okay?"
"Yes I'm fine, what's wrong?"
"Gallente spotted around a Colony."

I wished I could turn back time to when I was happy.

"Where is that damn Federation Issue Megathron?"

"Sir, it is only a prototype, it is the only one in existence it can't be everywhere at once."

"I was promised a new battleship to quickly suppress this little Caldari uprising and all I get are excuses. I told that ineffective Gallente Congress that this war was going to break out soon and all those buracrats did were drag their feet and say we do not want to upset our Caldari equals.  Equals, ha!  The Caldari are down right...."

"Mom, I'm done with my homework and I'll be back later." I said as I ran through the door.  My mom wasn't too thrilled that my best friend was a Caldari, and such a low class one at that.  My mom believed in equality of all humans but some were more equal.

"Come out!" I shouted.  I always did my homework quick and ran over to his house.  It was like clock work, I'd show up and he'd never be ready.  Little did I know that it wasn't so much that I was smarter than him, but more that I had personal tutors for each of my subjects and while I took it for granted, his parents were not in a position of offer him such advantages.

His parents weren't too thrilled that I was his choosen best friend but such was life and Caldari were always one to take advantage of an opportunity. My father was the only adult in this situation.

My father, as far as I knew, was a lower level diplomat here on a mission of understanding Caldari culture.  In truth he was a very high level undercover black ops.  The Gallente Federation had know of the Caldari State for years before their existence was made to public knowledge.  Gallente had then sent undercover agents to infiltrate the planet one full generation before the existence of another inhabited planet in our solar system was declared. The results of this infiltration was disturbing.  While Gallente technology was atleast a generation ahead of Caldari tech, they were catching up at an amazing rate and within two generations would surpass us unless something was done.  This was when the program started.  The program to understand Caldari society and determine who the future leaders will be, and to ensure that they would become more loyal to Gallente Federation than their individual planet.

"Sir... sir, you just drifted off are you ok?"

"Gallente spotted, that tells me nothing officer...ARE you going to tell me what kind of ships, their numbers and relative location from the colony or do I have to BEAT it out of you?"

"Sorry sir, they, uhm, it's one scout ship that was spotted behind the moon, it has since ran off to the asteroid belt. We suspect a larger Gallente force is incoming."

"And why are they incoming?"

"One of the corporations had set up some weapons testing facilities and construction yards there."

"Good, lets plot a course to the planet and try to scare the bad bad Gallente away."

"Hathor, you damn cheater, there is now way the Gallente will be able to build a ship able to contain and launch multiple frigate sized ships with those specs!"

My best friend had once again defeated me.  I would always play Caldari and he would play Gallente, this time the Caldari started the war, well kinda.  Some Caldari who demanded complete freedom from the Gallente Federation had attacked Nouvelle Rouvenor.  If I had known how accurate this particular game, on this day, was to current events I'm not sure what I would have done differently, but something...

"Lies, your just upset that you lost again.  The Gallente are already the masters at controlling drones.  There is also a rumor that they have a single cruiser ship, the Guardian-Vexor that can control 15 drones."

I should have paid attention those days, how could my friend have known so much about Gallente military, why was he so keen on it?  Actually my father would have been the interested one.  My father was a deep undercover agent of Gallente to subvert any attempts that the Caldari would try to break free from the Federation, and he was aware that someone was gathering and dispersing Gallente military secret and none secret capabilities to the Caldari.  Had he known that his own son was best friends with the leader of the underground Caldari resistance movement he would have paid more attention.  The spy business is a complicated one.  Publicly my father was a minor diplomat, but this allowed him free access and mobility to conduct his true public secret mission of performing a psychological profile and historic trace of Caldari leaders to predict the next generation leaders.

The Gallente, the only true democracy in New Eden, were also experts at propaganda and behavior prediction to the point where elections a full generation in advance was predicted to within 20%.  Caldari not being a democracy made their predictions more accurate to within 60%.  The Caldari state had an Ole Boy system of promoting those that had ties to the right people, but due to the fierce completion between rivaling Mega Corporations, if you did actually excel in your duties then based on merit you would also rise to the top.  The exact mathematics behind these predictions never interested me but for some reason modeling Caldari was simpler.  Hathors family was never particularly rich, but they did seem to work hard and excel and the models had told my father's superiors that Hathor himself would rise promenently in the Caldari military.  Funny, those same models didn't comprehend that Hathor's father already ran the military, but it was an impressively accurate prediction even with this error in input data.

Hathor's father was not particularly good at keeping secrets from his son who was well able to overhear his father's conversations, funny... here was a child whose father was everything my father was searching for but my dad didn't know.  It was a shame, my father never had time to listen to me, for if he did we might not have reached the stage we currently are, this war, this unnecessary war could have been stopped before it started but that was a fantasy now...

"Sir," my second in command alerted me through my neural implant, "we will be arriving shortly please return to the bridge."

Why of all these times, why was I remembering those days.  I arrived on the bridge as my Navy Dominix was dropping out of warp.  It was an old ship, not by any means outdated, just old.  It had for a log time been a ship used to lay mines in asteroid belts that the Gallente claimed sovereignty over.  Some brilliant scientists and realized that a similar interface could be used to control other weapons rather than simply deploying mines.  That was the birth of the sentry drones.  Powerful long range deployable drones that could shoot distant targets.  It was theorized that planetary bombardment could be done by these ships, that theory had not been tested to date, but it soon would...

"Sir, what is that?"

"Why are you asking me ensign?  You are controlling the ships scanners."

In the distance, aligned to an unknown warp point stood a beast, a behemoth of dangerous proportions, it was a true battleship.  And if the scans were right it had 8 missile launchers loaded.  The Caldari had earlier released a ship called the Scorpion that was able to prevent custom officers from scanning valuable cargo.  It took years for us to even realize that this was common Caldari Operating procedures.  That was a defensive ship that had no place on a battlefield, but this, this Ravenous looking ship, this was an offensive weapon, what I wouldn't do to have my father here now.

"I want everyone at their stations familiarizing with the controls! I want every trace that we were here burned up in the upper atmosphere. And someone please get me some caffeine before I fall asleep."
Things were looking grim, we arrived just in time to transfer crews from several different ships to even be able to man this thing, a skeleton crew but it'll have to do.
And now well, let's just say it's not fun to look down the launch bays a rather powerful Galente ship.
Thank goodness I had the foresight to power up all available weapons and load up the launch tubes, it did worry me that a supposed unfinished ship was in fact finished and fitted for combat. Probably something to do with what happened at Nouvelle Rouvenor, I would really like to punch the person behind it in the face repeatedly, it was way too soon for any hostilities, and striking against civilians was the absolute worst part about it. The Gallente quickly held elections and the results were not good for us.
And what I'm seeing on sensors is aligned with that. Not that we weren't in fault, this ship is proof of that and they'll only see this as the next stage in aggression.

"Nu-uh, you're just lying to get your way. If you get those I want a bigger fleet."
"You already have a bigger fleet, you're just jealous that my men are better then yours."
"Andrew Hi-ven Fredrick Lecious! You cheat!"
"Whatever I'm heading home, you can lay down the rules tomorrow and make it fair if you didn't like mine."
"Can't Andrew, I have to study, maybe later."

Re: Eve Online: The Gallente Caldari War

For my father got word that Hathor's dad was laid off.  My father's superiors gave him an ultimatum, stick with his hunch and stay on Caldari Prime and lose 5 ranks or return to Gallente Prime and gain one rank. My father was a man of principle whom in his own way was honestly working towards peace between Gallente and Caldari only with ensuring Gallentean superiority over Caldari ad infinitum.  But he also was a family man who knew a good deal when he saw one.  He swallowed his pride and returned to Gallente Prime with increased roles but he always wondered if he did the right thing.

Hathor's father was not truely laid off but the Caldari underground decided he was too important to have to lead a double life and so "suggested" that he get fired and took care of his material needs so he could focus on developing Caldari's military.  Had anyone bothered to keep track of the family they would have noticed that their standard of living actually increased while Hathor's dad was seemingly unemployed.  Those stupid models, assuming that an unemployed father would lead to his son becoming a nobody... all of this could have been avoided if only my father was listened to.

Re: Eve Online: The Gallente Caldari War

"Can we open up a channel to the big ship?" Hathor asked from his command chair and instantly a couple of guys were banging on keys trying to find the routine and send a channel request. "And?" Hathor asked getting visibly annoyed. "Almost there sir" came from across the room.
"Okay, I can send an audio message." The man then said visibly relieved.
"Okay," Hathor started,"Give them the following message. This is Hathor commander of the Caldari fleet, my condolences for Nouvelle Rouvenor but we cannot allow you to conduct military exercises in this sector." Hathor pauzed and then nodded to the man he had now identified as Alex his radioman.  Some more buttons were pressed and the message was out.

Re: Eve Online: The Gallente Caldari War

"Tackle squad, make sure that thing does not manage to warp away."  I was accompanied by only a few other ships, mainly cruisers and frigates.  This was after all a chase of a rumor and while a full third of the military technically answered to me, I saw no reason to have it chasing shadows.  The frigates were capable of exceeding 3 kilometers per second and in moments the Caldari ship was immobilized and unable to leave, now I would get some answers.

"Cruisers, proceed to break his shields, maybe that will loosen the tongues of the pilots in that craft."

The Thorax was a dangerous cruiser class gunship, that was also capable of achieving mind boggling speeds.  Within minutes, the shields of the incompletely active ships was falling.

"Sir, we are receiving a hail"

"Put it through, I expect that ship will give us the answers we need"

"Hello, Andrew, please stand down."  A mixture of emotions flowed through me, I hadn't seen nor spoken to Hathor since those many years ago when my family departed Caldari Prime, and yet here he was, addressing me, as a fellow ship commander.

"That vessel, is property of the Caldari state and you will release it and stand down."

As he said that a squadron of blackbirds dropped out of warp and jammed the lock of my tackling frigates allowing the Caldari ship to escape.  While this was a great loss, I just needed to keep Hathor here for a bit longer, as the Federation Issue Megathron was mere moments away with an entire wing supporting it.

Re: Eve Online: The Gallente Caldari War

"No response?" Hathor asked his comm officer. No was the reply. Hathor took a moment in the lul of battle to figure out why he wouldn't respond. He can might win the fight, Hathor thought. He has enough ships to statistically beat me by a small margin, he'd lose some ships and it would be Pyhrric at best but it might rally their population.

"Reinforcements!" Hather exclaimed, "He's waiting for the rest of his fleet to jump in so he can mop the floor with us."
Everyone on the bridge stared blankly at Hathor for a moment. Then everyone started smiling, including Hathor.
"ETA 1min." The sensor officer said and with that Hathors smile turned into a grin. "Electronic warfare, give em whatever you have, block their sensors.
The next few minutes were agonizing as both fleets unleashed attacking protocols and defensive  firewalls were deployed.
"It's here!" The sensor officer shouted. Every ship in the formation sprung into action , turning and powering warp drives to jump away.

The Gallente sprung into action, accelerating towards the Caldari fleet but as soon as they flew out of their formation they saw where the space station that once orbited the planet had gone to, accelerating with a fiery red glow was the space station, slignshotted across the planet to dazzeling speed it exploded right under the Gallente fleet sending a large blast of radiation and debris to the enemies of the Caldari.
The Caldari jumped in the seconds it took the Gallente to notice and respond to the new threat.

Too close for comfort.

Re: Eve Online: The Gallente Caldari War

Sir, scouts are not able to keep that ship in place.

"Damn it!" screamed Andrew, lock that ship down.  As I said that I realized that the blackbirds had come out of warp and things just got alot more interesting.  Fighting an unknown ship was one thing, fighting the known danger of blackbirds that had a tendency of shutting off all offensive capabilities of a ship.

"Deploy drones, Tango formation!" was my next order.  This was a highly experimental tactic, I had theorized that the Caldari countermeasures required line of sight to work correctly, and so with drones deployed and our tackle squad aligned in a straight line hopefully a few ships would be able to go back on the offensive.  The formation burnt full speed towards the Blackbird squadron, and a few reported that they were regaining their locks.  "Engage, engage, blow them out of the sky."

As some of the tackle squads began to re-engage the Blackbirds, our reinforcements finally arrived.  Caldari experimental ship, meet Gallente experimental ship.  The Federation Issue Megathron with a wing of support fell out of warp and immediately began burning towards the Caldari State Issue Raven.

The captain of the Megathron contacted me, "A pleasure Andrew, you seemed to have found something special here, I am glad I arrived in time to be of assistance."

With that said something odd happened, in my frantic moment of issuing commands and our seeming salvation arriving I had not noticed that all of the Caldari ships were aligned out, and none of our tackle squads had reported being able to keep them in place.  In mere moments after the arrival of out friendly Megathron, the Caldari were all already in warp.  That was strange, I thought, Hathor had had the upper hand, he would have been able to inflict some damage and would have almost been certain of leaving before taking too many losses.  I was confused and pondering why he would do such an action.

"Sir!", yelled my sensor operator, the station, it's falling from orbit.

"Wait, what??".  On the main display it was clear to see the massive research station falling towards the planet.  We were close enough to take significant damage from its explosion and maybe some losses.

"Scatter, warp anywhere!", was mt finaly command to the entire fleet.  Most of the tackle frigates had not made it out, The heavy armor of the Megathron somewhat protected it but it had hull breaches in multiple locations and was no longer combat ready.  The heaviest losses were in the thorax cruisers.  These were too large to warp in time, but their defense was too thin to surive the explosion.  The remenant of the fleet regrouped at Gallente Prime, this was not a good day.

Re: Eve Online: The Gallente Caldari War

The flotilla came out in a near system and after a quick headcount Hathor was delighted to hear that everyone had made it safely out. Less exciting was the fact that if that trick did destroy or damage ships he had now declared war, when the sudden onset euphoria dissipated this grim realization sunk in. War, war is coming to the Gallente and the Caldari...

He crunched the numbers in his head, he counted ship strengths, defenses, pilot training and he knew, he knew the Caldari could not win. The numbers were not equal, Andrew had an unfair advantage. They would destroy Caldari Prime and with it the hope of an entire race of people....
"GET ME TO CALDARI PRIME!" Hathor billowed rising from his seat, he was exaggerating but needed order restrored . His cheerful crew, that was hugging each other turned to Hathor in silence. "Do you not understand!? We have just declared WAR on Gallente and they WILL destroy us," Hathor calmed himself before continuing, "so get your asses back to your consoles and plot me a course to Caldari prime, " with a voice as the calmest of oceans he added: now...

Once back on Caldari he explained the situation to the corporations that had appointed him, they agreed with his assessment of the situation but scolded Hathor for his actions and at the same time commended him, surprised Hathor asked why, they showed him a picture of the Megathron, it was riddled with minor damage across the hull, larger holes seem to have formed in the weak joints between sections. 'It is a loss but not one they cannot fill with smaller craft until they build this ship back even better.' Hathor commented, his words did not fall on deaf ears as a plan for full evacuation of the planet was drafted awaiting to be implemented as soon as the Gallente respond to this attack.

Thrusters burn a fiery glow as another cruise liner turned evacuation ship leaves the planet to bring hundreds to safety. Hastor watches the sky teeming with engine trails and blinking lights as he takes a sip of a rather strong drink he picked up off world. 'I thought you were saving that for a special occasion' A womens says, barley louder then the ambient sound, she walks up to Hastors turned back and her hands slide around his waist. "I hate it when you leave, and this time... This time I don't know if you'll come back, please, lets just get on one of those ships and leave. Togheter."

"You know I can't do that."
"Yes you can, you just have to want it."
"No...you know I can't I've told you everything that happened in the old days. You know what I had to do to get here, all the way up here on the highest floor. I'm not giving that up. Never," A sudden flare of anger could be heard in Hastors voice before he cools himself "... Your shuttle is coming after the next one, you should get dressed and get ready. I have to leave in a bit aswell, I'll walk you there."

Re: Eve Online: The Gallente Caldari War

It's a strange feeling for Hathor, sitting up here, watching ships filled with his fellow men scoot off into the distance as we get the confermation that Gallente is marching their fleet straight into our home. It's like his entire life has built up to this moment and when it's reaching it's explosive finale he feels nothing but cold hard facts running through  his mind. How many can make it off the planet, how many will be stuck, how many ships can they pick off the Gallente before being forced to retreat.

Hathor feels very confident despite the odds, the fleet is stationed just off the closest path they can take here, defensive stations have been towed into position right behind the Caldari fleet. And the best thing about this whole thing is that they replaced Andrew with a yes-man Admiral first class. One of his first mates runs up to him and hands him a piece of paper. It reads: 12 frigates and 2 cruisers as avant-garde, unkown composition of main fleet.

He was ready for them and they would feel his wrath.

Re: Eve Online: The Gallente Caldari War

Mack was nothing if not cautious, he made the majority of the fleet  warp to the far side of the moon of Caldari Prime.  From this vantage point it would take mere moments to reach any tactical point over the near by planet.  Simultaneously an scout squadron consisting of only 20 pilots were warped directly over the most populated city on Caldari Prime.

The scouts fell out of warp, and these seasoned veterans did what their training and experience, upon exiting warp they starbursted in multiple directions.  Going into this fight volunteers were called for, and the majority of the fleet stood forward.  They were blinded by patriotic fervor to defend their defiled Gallente homeland, and strike back at the evil and untrust worthy Caldari.  Mack thinned the numbers down to those without living relatives and offered them quadruple annual pay for this single operation if they died.  This pay would be sent to any cause they deemed fit.

The starburst maneuver was executed expertly and the Gallente scout ships were free from colliding into each other.  They then enabled their afterburners and increased velocity to amazing rates.  This bought them precious moments to report what they saw.  And what they saw was dire, directly in line with their warpin was a massive heavily defended and armed defense station in orbit over Caldari prime, they knew their lives were soon to be over, but they were determined to collect as much data as possible for the main fleet.

Re: Eve Online: The Gallente Caldari War

"Jam! Jam! Every single channel, don't let a single byte of data get back!" Hathor looked left and right as dexterous hands were working at fourhundred presses per minute, the scouts accelerated faster and faster away from the fleet. 5 shot down, one rammed into a fighter, 3 more shot down, 2 disabled with a strong gamma radiation pulse from one cruiser. 13 and 14 gave everyone some scares but were dispatched. What happened to the rest weren't confirmed, someone had shot a rather large missile at them and the explosion blinded all sensors for a brief moment. After the smoke had cleared only debris could be seen, there was no way to confirm if all of them were caught in the blase. Hathor dispatched a ship to go looking for more but knew that they could be anywhere if it wasn't destroyed.

He shifted the defensive lines, one above the south pole of the planet and one above the north pole. Ground defenses should be able to make the Gallente approach with caution, allowing forces to close in from both sides. If the enemy went to kill the ones at the north they would retreat over the other side, giving some rather large cannons at the poles something to shoot at.

Evacuation at 60%.

Hathors brow frowned when he saw the first blips on radar appear, pinpricks in the vastness of space. Those pinpricks soon became blobs that merged into a bigger whole.
"Alert planetary defense force, give them accurate grid positions for anything bigger then a frigate. Group north and south move in, group south moves at 90% of our speed, tell them to spread themselves in a big long line, but retreat back if they come after them. Ready all weapons and cycle all shields," the sound of his voice was methodical and crisp, it cut through the bridge, fingers darted around on holographic keyboards relaying orders. "Approximate firepower is two-hundred thirty percent of ours, we still have a a tenth of our fleet ready to warp in and a fourth is still ferrying passengers...shall I call them to action?" Ensign Alexandra called out. Opting not to inform her commander via the interface to get her point across no doubt. She'd make a good captain one day, just a bit too stiff for his liking.

"Considerations noted, we don't require them yet." Hathor replied stoicly. She knew her place, saluted and turned her head back to her console. "Lets see what these Gallente can do. Macro missiles as we make our approach wait until we're at optimal range before unleashing our main armaments."
