In the United States of America, Church and State are seperate.  Our LAWS will NOT be dictacted to us by the Church, ever!  The minute some idiotic pompous windbag of a politician starts shoving religios doctrine of what god says we can or can't do, is when the church has stepped over the line.

The sex of the couple in a marriage is something that is ingrained in our societal beleifs; whether its origins are religious or not has no relevance. Murder is wrong in most religions, that doesn't mean that the state can't outlaw murder; our society recognizes murder as wrong, so we outlaw it; society has always recognized marriage as an institution between a man and a wife, and just because many religions do too, doesn't mean we can't keep the institution between a man and a wife. Our country's founders were christian and most if not all the principles the country was founded on are christian.
