Topic: Germany to quit conscription

Watched a movie about WW1 I guess tongue.

Personally I think its a good thing. You'll get more professional, motivated soldiers. It saves some money as well. Its also a good thing those young people could start their career earlier.

Re: Germany to quit conscription

Hmmm... Only usefull if they're actually going to use their armed forces. No need for highly professional armed forces when your constitution forbids it to properly use them.

Now they can use the Conscription to teach large amounts of Germans the real meaning of dicipline.

they could ask their grandfathers now can they?

Re: Germany to quit conscription

Language skills of non natives in the army also improve via conscription

Not many people know this, but I own the first radio in Springfield. Not much on the air then, just Edison reciting the alphabet over and over. "A" he'd say; then "B." "C" would usually follow...

Re: Germany to quit conscription

Conscription had many other advantages.
Army was just closer to the whole society since most boys had to go through it.

Without conscription i would have probablly never been in the army and i have to say that i learned a lot of things there.
Also it made me think way different about the army then i thought before.

Re: Germany to quit conscription

I am 50% German. One of my German lines descends from Junkers in eastern Prussia, and another is from Magdeburg. I have no know idea what status the Magdeburg line had, but I think they were peasants. The Junker line was quite well off with many being professionals like bankers or owners of printing companies. The other line was, until recently, farmers.

Speaking of the German military, I just think it's funny that my ancestors were Junkers, and they never served in the US military.

Re: Germany to quit conscription

It's a good step in the right direction. It's a shame though, germany is finally taking steps to create a more professional military, but its constitution prevents it from being used properly.

I really like conscription, i think it should be introduced in the UK, but i guess the fear is it will make bad kids worse. lol

To be 50% German, doesn't that require one of your parents to be German, rather than having some German ancestors?

"conscripts make poor soldiers. the Russians are trying to replace conscripts with professionals."

Not per se. The Russian army is troubled by the dedovshchina system, wich clearly renders the entire conscription programme useless. That's why the Russian army seeks to replace the conscripts with professionals.

Not in America! Let's see, your parents are 1/2, and your grandparents are 1/8, and their parents are 1/16, and their parents are 1/32 and their parents are 1/64, and at least one of them is Indian because everybody in America is 1/64 indian....hm...

its tricky but I think your great-great-great-grandparents led a rally, taht's 3/64ths ( less the Native American warrior) and your great great grandparents were there, that's 4/32s or 8/64ths, and the great grandparents are there that's 4/16ths or 16/64ths, and then your grandparents are 4/8ths that's 32/64ths, that's it right there...even if both your granddads and one grandmother opted to be Black and both your parents were Russian , if one grandma and all great grandparents on both sides were German that settles it, even excusing the Sioux war chief that's 35/64ths.

Re: Germany to quit conscription

WFS,

In America, nobody but a potty mouth patriot considers their ancestry "American," unless it is short for "Native American." Therefore, your ancestry is calculated by tracing the nation of origin for the generation that immigrated to the United States. If all lines of your ancestors traced to the generation they immigrated to the US came from France, then you are 100% French. Likewise, if the ancestors from your father's line all originated from France, and Ireland from your mother's line, then you are 50% French and 50% Irish.

Moreover, the nationality of your ancestors prior to the generation they arrived in the US are irrelevant. If one of your lines was from Britain, but that line traces to Norman nobility in 1066, that does not qualify you as French. Or if your ancestor was half Belgian and half German, but lived in and departed from Germany, then you are not Belgian.

typically Belgian, avoiding taxes. tongue

Re: Germany to quit conscription

yeah but conscription isn't a career, it's more of a personal development thing.  If you want to be a soldier then you make that your career.  I think conscription teaches teenagers respect and well needed discipline.

Re: Germany to quit conscription

German conscription also taught the soldiers how to politically think.  Meaning indoctrination to a more OPEN MINDED society, and training their soldiers what is right and what is wrong.

Your talking about a society that fought in two world wars, that had their teeth kicked in twice, and their civilian population learn what is acceptable behavior and what is not.  They had to train their soldiers for over 50 years, to steer their thinking away from the edicts created by the problems of WW1 and WW2.

One that not every nation or race is out to get you.  And they were a paranoid bunch 60 years ago.  They've had 60 years worth of training of the proper way to fight a war, and learn the Articles of War by wrote and memorization.

They have to know all the articles before their allowed promotions.

What a load of bollocks, you can't possibly be serious about that! Your ancestors have absolutely nothing to do with what nationality you are/embody. It's a terrible anachronistic system and it's geneticly speaking a laugh! My ancestors were from the Asian plains a few centuries ago, that doesn't make me asian.
In the same way, you're not 50% German, as Germany probably didn't exist at that the time your ancestors crossed the ocean..
