Topic: Prequels

In general would you deem it wise to view / read a prequel before you commence the actual series? Or would you wait till you saw / read the initial series and then, as a kind of dessert, then read the prequel?
Possibly because it is intended as an extra, and add-on, a by-play or some nice clarifying background once you've gone through the main bit.

I'm asking because I am about to begin the Wheel of Time series, and apparantly there is a prequel. So I am wondering what to do.

The Star Wars prequels weren't really very interesting (all I remember is little Anakin, a muppet kungfu Yoda and a while bunch of clones), so I'm tending to wait with the prequel.

Re: Prequels

I havent read it but I hear Robert Jordan never finished the series

generally i would read the prequel last so you understand it better

Re: Prequels

Read the novels chronolically (in releasedates, not the story itself). It usually makes the most sense that way..

Re: Prequels

indeed.

1. Robert Jordan did not finish the series, but his wife/editor is having Brandon Sanderson finish it (new book is coming out soon if it isn't already out yet)

2. The prequel for the series basically gives a back story for a few mid-level characters, I'm with Arnor though, I believe the prequel came out after book 7 or 8.

3. I'm addicted to the series and just want it to end. I need closure dammit

Re: Prequels

I heard Robert Jordan sucks... Uses imagery like "yellow, like a school bus, or my dogs pee" etc tongue

You should try reading The Belgariad and The Malloreon.

Belgariad is composed of 5 pieces:
   1. Pawn of Prophecy (1982)
   2. Queen of Sorcery (1982)
   3. Magician's Gambit (1983)
   4. Castle of Wizardry (1984)
   5. Enchanters' End Game (1984)

Malloreon is composed of 5 pieces also (read after reading the Belgariad series)
   1. Guardians of the West (ISBN 0-345-35266-1)
   2. King of the Murgos (ISBN 0-345-35880-5)
   3. Demon Lord of Karanda (ISBN 0-345-36331-0)
   4. Sorceress of Darshiva (ISBN 0-345-36935-1)
   5. The Seeress of Kell (ISBN 0-345-37759-1)

I liked them alot. More then Lord of the Rings series i think.

Or, instead, why won't you try something completely different. I recommend DBC Pierre's Vernon God Little!

Re: Prequels

Tards. All of you.

Wheel Of Time is awesome. And it really doesn't matter if you read the prequel first or not... it doesn't really change the storyline at all, just gives some backgroundinfo on a couple of important characters..

The series as a whole is very well written, and you should brace yourself for a long-lasting addiction.

Re: Prequels

So did J.R.R. Tolkien. His notes didn't make The Silmarillion a very readable story though. Much depends on how detailed and such his notes are wink

Re: Prequels

my parents have a thumbeared anthology of children's literature that has an excerpt from the Hobbit where Bilbo gets the Ring the old way

should proabbly secure that, will be worth money

What was "the old way"?

Re: Prequels

The Silmarillion is an excellent work X(

It wasn't intended to be for entertaining purposes like LOTR was, it was about the history of middle earth tongue.  Which i suppose is why some people don't find it enjoyable hmm.

also i think my nerd is showing

Re: Prequels

its alluded to in LOTR, Gollum lost the ring in the Riddle Game and then showed Bilbo the way out of the mountains.  Tolkien changed it to show the Ring was really uniquely powerful and then did the best "retcon" of all time: There were two different versions because the Ring perverted Bilbo into lying about how he got it; in the "false" version he owned it fair and square

Re: Prequels

Oh yes, well in that case I own the new version tongue

And Undeath, I don't disagree that the Silmarillion is a terrific story, but it's not one you can read as a story.
I bothered to read Christopher Tolkien's preface, in wich he told he had to puzzle the story together from all sorts of notes. I'm not sure wether Tolkien wanted it to be more than a history of Middle-Earth, but I think he did, cause the notes that were left behind were substantial enough to make the novel The Children of H

Re: Prequels

I hate prequels... as well as sequels and... triquels?

Intentionally created prequels would be part 1.
And sequels 99% of the time are created just because part 1 was successful. Which makes them crap 99% of the time.
Only good sequels aren't actual sequels, just part of a saga.

And I'm sick with people lacking original ideas, writing used to be about bringing out something original. Now writers take classes in learning how to write like someone else.

Re: Prequels

Steven Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen series, blows most stuff I've ever read right out of the water.
Belgariad and Mallorean (yes, I've read the whole set) are pretty poor by comparison.
Have not read the WoT, but I hear from those who have that the series drags horribly in the middle, which is not uncommon and something I've seen with a number of other series I have read.  Didn't find this the case with MbotF simply because he switches characters, locations, 'sides', and races with each book, and is packed so full of awesomeness that you almost have to re-read each book several times to pick up all the things that you didn't realise were there until 4 books later when it was referenced from another person's perspective.
Ian C Esslemont's Malazan Empire novels run parallel to the other series and highlight important events, and his first book is a prequel of sorts (in terms of when it occurs) but should only be read after book 3 of the MbotF as it does let slip some information about certain people which would spoil their appearances in the other books somewhat if you knew who they were.

I shall now stuff my rabid fanboy back into his box neutral

This used to be the best signature ever, but after several years, a mod noticed it had a swear in it, and removed it.  I am happy to see they are paying attention.

Re: Prequels

I finished all o' th' WoT books!  Awesomeness on a stick.

I fretted a week o'er th' lack o' th' finishin' book, due MAY 2012 X(

But I moved on t' re-readin' CS Forester, Hornblower series chronologically.  I started with th' Aubrey an' Maturin series (Master & Commander) but I found it t' be too slow.  After Hornblower I'll take on Warsies sugggestion on Malazan Book o' th' Fallen.
