Topic: Community History

I was inspired by this thread to try to think of the things outside of the actual game that have defined the IC community.

This is important to me, because I never considered myself a great player (although I've had my moments) but I've always been interested in the events outside of the actual game that have driven the history of the community.

A timeline is what I'd like to build eventually, but for starters here are some things that stand out to me.

* Switching to IRC for chat.
* First EOR Awards (do these still happen?)
* Mace and Stephen's IC Wizards contribution/sub-community.
* IC cliques and clans (I can't think of any off the top of my head, but I know there have been a few prominent ones)
* Fads (cocklefighting, TDZK?)
* Nibbler's gallery.
* Various IC-Portal incarnations.
* IC Internet Radio
* Issues with other online communities (I recall we were "invaded" by players from some other game, and at one point I remember a group of ICers invading the Planetarion forums)
* Introductions of various tools (mapgen, various news analyzers)
* Introduction of fmods and rookiemods.
* Switch from old forums to current.

The things on this list are obviously a little "strange", and of questionable significance depending on who you ask.  But these things are overall shaped the community just as much as the actual game, if not more.

Please, add your favorite memory of something that was born of people who play this game.  After all, we're the ones who keep things alive after Stef and MM go to sleep (to say it nicely).

Ah yes, TI was the one I was thinking of.

Ectroverse just came to mind.  I remember it gaining some traction with a fair amount of ICers.  What was that one game Sogil made?  I never played that one, but I do remember it slightly.

lol, ectroverse, there is a game i havent played in a long long time, indeed, that was weer alot of IC people came to play aswell. I thought it was sogils creation, not sure though.

And who can forget teh firetruck drawings after the big fire, still makes me smile when i think of it.

For me the highlight would be the time i spend in RL with people i met in IC. Even went to a dance fest with quite a big group form IC at one stage. I met people in RL whom i'd would never have met before, and we had great fun.

A good deal of ic players formed a clan in the game 'Kingdom of Loathing'. Know some played there for quite a while: cestan, visser, ...

irc chat has/had some channels that exist(ed) for quite some time (next to #general and #mod), can't remember em all but will list some (prolly there are also fam channels that stayed active after a fam ceased to exist):

smile I remember trapping planets with lasers, to those families that negotiated planets for ceasefires.

Ectoverse was an open source creation by maloeran. Sogil used the ectoverse engine to make his german medieval version drowned worlds smile just to clear it up
