Topic: America: Language Study

Inspired by Avogadro's thread, and because I haven't been an arsehole to anyone for a while, I would like any American posters here who can speak a non-continental American language to say so here.
Oh, and it would be nice if you said what languages you speak, too.

Now remember, no continental American languages allowed. wink

"So, it's defeat for you, is it? Someday I must meet a similar fate..."

Re: America: Language Study

I can speak a little German. I still want to choke them for not ridding their language of "Sie" though. They only need "Du." We got rid of "Thy" and "Thou", so why can't they get rid of "Sie?"

Re: America: Language Study

all of my family in the US can speak tagalog.

Re: America: Language Study

It was harsh to say no European languages for us Euros, you forget, we are not a unified close bunch of people, most Europeans hate other Europeans and will never visit their country or have anything to do with each other.

Canada and America have far more in common with each other then England and France. Canada and Mexico believe it or not have more in common then Ukraine and Spain.

Re: America: Language Study

Vast majority of people have no problem with America the country, its just most of our interaction with American people come via forums or xbox live - you can see why that would present a biased viewpoint

Re: America: Language Study

@Chickenwingz

You speak tagalog?  zOMG, Must find you on IRC!

@Khaz Modan

I'm pretty sure that the internet causes people to lose about 20% of their IQ points and lose all social skills.  Happened with me when I first got the internet!  big_smile

Re: America: Language Study

lol,

to my shame I never heard about it before. Looked it up in Wikipedia. What is the reason you speak it? Are your parents from the Philippines?

@east:
continue with German and Chinese. Some villages in the US speak Chinese for centuries. In some of them, only one guy know how to speak/write English to fill in the papers.

Long story, LP.  And one which I don't plan on explaining here.  tongue

Because for us germans it is simply normal and appears more polite to use "Sie" towards some people.
Also i am somehow surprised that u name this as the big arsed stuff in german. Most not native speakers have biggest problems with "der,die,das".

But in the end it cant be bad to speak a more or less difficult language. It trains the brain in some way and makes it easier to learn other languages since they often appear "simple"

Re: America: Language Study

The hardest part of German is the Wechselprapositionen and other Akkusativ, Dativ and Genetiv related things. The grammatical theory isn't that hard but the changes it brings is hard (like 'denn' and so on)

God: Behold ye angels, I have created the ass.. Throughout the ages to come men and women shall grab hold of these and shout my name...

Re: America: Language Study

Der Dativ ist dem Genitiv sein tod? smile

Re: America: Language Study

I thought you kept the 2nd person personal to be insulting

Americans just use naughty verbs.

I WANT TO STRANGLE THE PEOPLE THAT ARE PREVENTING ITS DEATH

DEATH TO WECHSELPREPOSITIONEN!

Not many people know this, but I own the first radio in Springfield. Not much on the air then, just Edison reciting the alphabet over and over. "A" he'd say; then "B." "C" would usually follow...

So... only one American on here can speak a non-continental-American language?
And Avogadro is looking down on us Euro's because?

"So, it's defeat for you, is it? Someday I must meet a similar fate..."

Re: America: Language Study

because you pretend you are cultured and refined

when %-wise you = Americans

you know 100% of the languages you might actually use.
