i disagree, the Netherlands did not play well; i would rather have my nation's team lose every game in a world cup that they play then to watch them play like the netherlands did and win the entire thing. Yes, the Spanish weren't saints either; but their offenses pale in comparison. It wasn't a Good game, so a simple "Good Game" would not suffice, the Dutch embarrassed themselves and the sport.
Primo, spoken like a truly biased football supporter! Half the dutch team should have been sent off. Yes, there were a ridiculous number of yellow cards, but that was because the players were fouling constantly and constantly committing bookable offenses. You are right that asking for bookings is a bookable offense but the referee had to rein himself in, if he booked every bookable offense there would only be the Dutch goalkeeper left by the end. The goal was not offside and I'm glad Spain won after the way the Dutch played. I was supporting Netherlands to start with but the way they were playing I switched sides.
Netherlands were not only a disgrace to their country and to the footballing legacy of Netherlands they were a disgrace to football.

i agree that some of the fouls were over the line (well, really just de jong) but refereeing has everything to do with that as well.
it wasn't the best match, but finals never are.
spain won, i can live with that, in the end they were the better team, they have the better players.
i do think holland deserves a whole lot of respect, if you take into consideration that holland is such a small country, and our national competition is nothing compared to most of the other western european leagues. i think reaching the final is a maginificent result.

oh and i just saw the replay, the goal was not offside.
the reason mathijssen was so upset is that sneijder's freekick was blocked by the spanish wall, and instead of a corner, the ref gave a goalkick, in the counter attack spain scores.
the pass that resulted in the goal definitely was not offside, there was a pass that was to Iniesta shortly before that was stopped, where the guy might of been offside, can't tell from the angle, but the ball was stopped well before it reached him, so even if he was offsides, i don't think he should of been called off, he wasn't in the play at that time.
Still we should have gotten a corner kick right before spain scored.
Even my blind grandma saw the ball got hit.

oh yeah, you mean off that free kick? guy in the wall deflected it? yeah... should of been a corner; but in this tournament calling a corner a goal kick is one of the lesser offenses of any ref...

Agree but for differenet reasons- Holland should not have finished the first half with 11 men on the pitch, the two footed chest high tackle was one of the clearest red cards ive ever seen.
Webb was far too reluctant to hand out reds, if he had shown a red earlier it might have been a better game, only one team wanted to play football ( it wasnt holland )

would it have been much of a match though if it did go to 11 on 10 that early? i doubt it.... i think the only people to blame for such an ungly match are the dutch.

all of that was pretty bad too
another thing is that the high amount of fouls on the dutch side may have something to do with not being experienced with playing at this level.
a high number of players in the dutch team does not play champions league, that's quite different in the spanish team.
i think the honour guard thing the dutch team did says enough.

Refereeing through the whole tournament was poor imo, the amount of deflections that were called against opposing teams was utterly pathetic. These "little" mistakes were for some teams the winning and losing of games and for that to be one of the contributers for results is totally shameful. And the way BOTH teams played in that final was pretty much right, all for glory no matter what happens, for them to do such rash things shows exactly how important this was for both teams.
