Topic: Computer help!

I'm having a fairly simple problem: After I click "Start," when right clicking on any icons within the menu, Windows Explorer stops working and needs to restart.


Computer is Windows Vista, a Dell computer.  I don't know much about computers, so bear with me on this.  tongue

somebody more expert than me can tell you how to use BIOS to reload your OS from a save date prior to the start of this problem

Try system restore.  If it doesn't work, see if you can go into safe mode to try system restore.


To get to safe mode, click "F8" before it hits the windows screen (you can keep clicking this from the beginning).   


Oh, will tell you this... VISTA SUCKS (this is coming from a Microsoft sysadmin)

I system restored to the earliest possible date, but it's still happening.  X(

Did dell give you any restore software?   Possibly restore pc to original settings?

You may also trying running trend-micro housecall (as could be a trojan doing this).  just google search trend micro housecall and run that in safe mode with networking

a likely cause is trouble with handles in your menus (where on top of the standard ones you have options like "scan this with ***", "undelete with ***", "share through ***", "burn this with ***" where *** = some software), do you have any fancy extensions like that? If that is so then the program ShellExView might help you out

other than that, what type of windows do you have? can you regain control through your task manager or is it a full fledged freeze?

CCleaner
Hijackthis


Run ccleaner first then hijackthis. post the results of the latter.

Uninstall Internet Explorer and re-install a later version and see what happens. (to me it seems that Windows Exporer and IE are tied in a certain way.)
