Re: Informal poll

i think his point was that you cant just assume it s only the pious ppl who use it.
zeh clothing style /look  has high hiding-stuff-potential,
and also take-advantage-of potential, like them bankrobbers in nun outfits in the movies.

others have mentioned other identity-hiding-styles :)difference is that we are used to those, and them veil is weirder to us,
you might also argue that it reveals even less about the person and what s on the person,  hence making it more potentially dangerous.

"ebil ones" dont have standard looks anymore, it could be anyone, they could be blackmailing (and thus using) anyonel;
they could use some chick or the chick's baby, or just the stroller, a granny or some 12 year old.

But we re talking everyday life here, and about how we want our public places to look, right?

i think we should also keep in mind that banning stuff like this will prolly only encourage it, even making a huge issue out of this stuff may prove to have that effect, i believe that is what i ve witnessed around me;
(young/adolescent) ppl deciding they have to protest, or proof a point, or wear it cuz they can, or deside overnight their identity lies in a large extra piece of cloth wrapped around them smile

sorry for the bad typing and prolly even worse punctuation xD

till the end of time..

Re: Informal poll

part of the ban is also that in some Islamic societies its use is enforced by violence, and by banning the burqa they definitely oppose that hardcore sharia

yupyup, that another argument frequently used smile but hten you get these women wearing them and saying they wear them by choice, and that they now feel poked in their right to wear what they want smile

Re: Informal poll

what govts should do is require all employers and agencies to permit the use of the chadoor out of respect for Islam

that'd really get the fur flying but not against the state tongue

Re: Informal poll

How has the bank robbing comment got this far? How many banks get robbed by people wearing burquas? The way it has been gone on about it sounds like an everyday occurance. If it is necessary for bank security then banks should be able to set a dress code requiring that the face be visible. The individual then has a choice about whether they want to remove their veil to go into the bank or not. It is not necessary to legislate against it so that a big brother government can tell people what they are allowed to wear. When it gets to the point that people are quoting film plots to illustrate their far fetched views things have stretched quite a way.

It has been possible for people to rob banks or hide things in a nun's habit for hundreds of years, why have we never had the discussion about legislating against that? Because it isn't a security threat! If one person's baggy religious clothing isn't a security threat then neither is someone else's. If someone is carrying a suicide vest then it doesn't make a difference whether their face is covered or not.

The burqua is sometimes thought of by non-muslims as a symbol of the repression of women. Where the evidence is that this is the case and that for the majority of wearers it is not worn through personal choice I have no idea. It is also once again missing the point, it is not the burqua that is the problem. It is the domestic violence. Domestic violence and abuse is a problem across all communities, and a violent husband is not going to think "hang on, no burqua anymore, I'm suddenly going to become kind, compassionate". The claim that banning the burqua will in any way prevent domestic violence is not based on evidence and certainly not on logic.

The call for a ban on burquas is totally based on xenophobia.
