Topic: Man Dies at Vancouver Games

The video of that is disturbing. On second he's moving ridiculously fast and the next moment he's come to a dead stop. Those tracks need like a plastic cover over the top of them

i think the g-forces that work on your brain when you decelerate from 150kmph / 90mph to 0kmph/mph in less than a second are enough to make it explode.

It happens very often in F1 and people dont die (ask Massa), but well the iron pilars so close to the circuit can turn a simple accident in a fatal death.

Organization failed, no excuses.

Re: Man Dies at Vancouver Games

It's also the longest luge in the world, and since there's been about a dozen accidents by people from all over the world, this seems a good time to keep them short

Re: Man Dies at Vancouver Games

Render, in F1 they rarely go fullspeed to 0 at once. as in, there's nowhere on the circuit you can do that. the gravel and the tires slow you down a lot first.
this guy was at fullspeed and crashed into a concrete pole. concrete poles are notorious for not giving in to human skulls.

and yes, obviously the organization is to blame, it was a human error, but human error should be anticipated in things like this.

Re: Man Dies at Vancouver Games

its a uniquely long luge run, there's been lots of accidents with other national teams on that luge run this week, I dont think its pilot error

Re: Man Dies at Vancouver Games

Pilot shouldn't have entered the turn late and slammed himself into the inside concrete wall so hard that he launched out of the track. Organization should anticipate all possible outcomes and make the damn walls high enough to keep riders in the track.

Re: Man Dies at Vancouver Games

If he had been the only injury I'd be more likely to blame him, but I think it may just be a dangerous track

btw

"The official told The Associated Press that the International Olympic Committee received confirmation of Nodar Kumaritashvili

Re: Man Dies at Vancouver Games

it was pilot error, chris, he took the turn completly the wrong way.

Re: Man Dies at Vancouver Games

Well, that's true... however I do wonder what the designers were thinking when placing concrete pillars right next to the track? I mean, just a "simple" plexiglass wall would have prevented his death probably

Re: Man Dies at Vancouver Games

absolutely, no excuse for that in my opinion

Re: Man Dies at Vancouver Games

well what qualifies this as an Olympic sport anyhow, I mean it also takes coordination and concentration to stand one-legged on a tree stump while people throw empty beer cans at you

it's a good thing i understand spanish lol

I am spanish and saw it at spanish news, didnt see others, and it is clear the pillars are too close to the circuit, plus the circuit itself needs more height in the walls right after the end of the curve. It is just common sense, no need for engineers to see this coming, the organization failed terribly.

Re: Man Dies at Vancouver Games

this is the worst winter olympics i can remember.

now with the speedskating competition..both the icemachines broke down mid-race...meaning they can't really continue..

and if they find a way to fix it, the conditions for the first 15 riders would have been completely different than for the last 15, because of changes in temperature and humidity.

the ice on the olympic oval has been horrid all throughout the tournament, but this is a new low.

Also I'm ticked that despite being in the same timezone as the Olympic games the opening ceremony still wasn't broadcast live where I live.

Re: Man Dies at Vancouver Games

I'm really ticked off as well with our free to air broadcasting here in Aus.

They *could* show all this live, seeing as it would probably be on Midnight right through to dawn from timezone differences, but they would rather save the money and play the repeated late night home shopping ads. =\ Then they just show highlights of the games in the evening...

Wish I had pay tv..

Re: Man Dies at Vancouver Games

apparently in skiing there was still a crewmember on the slope while one of the competitors was going downhill. they didnt crash into eachother, but it was very close...
