Topic: My PSU caught fire

One of the components in my PSU started to burn and it's only a year and a half old. I can't find the invoice from the store I bought it from. Even though I still have the box it came in without the invoice the manufacturer won't send me a new one hmm sad

Any recommendations for at least a 500w ATX powersupply? Only ones that don't explode plz

Re: My PSU caught fire

that is why the psu is the worst thing to cheap out on. it can destroy your computer. antec's earthwatts brand is reliable and reasonably priced, i highly recommend. hopefully nothing else got damaged from the fire.

What's a PSU?

How did you buy it? Credit card?

all i can think of is playstation underground, that old cd "magazine" tongue

Re: My PSU caught fire

psu is the power supply unit. it supplies electricity at the proper voltages to the different pieces of hardware that runs your computer.

Re: My PSU caught fire

oh

if you paid with credit card then there's a record of you paying to the store

if that doesnt work call your tv station and have them film the thing catch fire

Re: My PSU caught fire

hmmmmm the retailer may refuse to take care of it if you don't show him your invoice, but the manufacturer can't do that since it should be clearly his product. have you checked the manufacturer's website on how to contact them directly? I know when it comes to lcd tv's for example companies like philips have direct contact information

(also the date of manufacture should be deductable from the serial number of your PSU, that might help proving you're still in warranty)

Re: My PSU caught fire

I called the manufacturer directly. It's an apex al-b500e power supply. The said that without the invoice they won't issue a replacement. I've searched through all my finacial records and can't figure out when I bought it, all I know is that it was an online store in 2008. Nothing else was damaged. There's nothing on the psu that can be used to pinpoint a date.

Re: My PSU caught fire

if you bought it online yuo didn't pay cash, get the debit card or credit card transaction records

Re: My PSU caught fire

I offered to mail it to the manufacturer for them to investigate the fire for a possible recall. I think that was the right thing to say because they're now "making an exception" and have offered to send me a replacement big_smile

Re: My PSU caught fire

I don't know about local consumer law where you are, but consumer rights in the UK are quite well enshrined in law and responsibility for defect products ultimately lie with the manufacturer.  If it goes "pfffttt" (or in your case "fizz" and *flame!*) after an unacceptable time frame they are required by law to replace it free of charge.

To those who understand I extend my hand; To the doubtful I demand to take me as I am.

so in the UK, someone steals a tv. the tv breaks within a certain amount of time, thats unacceptable. the company is obligated to replace it even though the guy has no proof that he acquired it legally or how long he has actually had it? because thats the problem he's having. he doesnt have proof that he bought it and when he bought it.

Re: My PSU caught fire

If he bought it online then he'll have bank statements or credit card statements.  If he doesn't have the original copies he should be able to request copies from his bank.  I've no idea about credit card companies as I don't use them.  (Out of principle and out of laziness.)

I was also hoping that people would guess that you need proof of purchase in order to obtain a replacement.  It is kind of obvious?

The point about making that comment was actually to highlight a rather unknown tid-bit of UK consumer law for those who were interested. tongue People generally assume that because it is outside of the standard 1 year guarantee period that there's nothing they can do.  That couldn't be further from the truth.

To those who understand I extend my hand; To the doubtful I demand to take me as I am.
