Well, if you want to write your own story, just let your imagination flow in the beginning. Some people might comment and give you some tips.

IF you want to join a collaborative story, that is also possible. But there are no new ones.

4. Convince people to join your rp and stick with it.

Can't stress how important that is.

Fantasy and space rps are some of the best ones that have lasted.  I did Mage Wars (fantasy) for years, and I never did MS Wars (sci-fi), but it was also around for a long time.

With rules, they grew complicated because people lost a sense of respect for each other and limiting of characters.  When I first started we had two rules:
1. No godmoding
2. No killing other people's characters (I'm not even sure if this was the second one)

The point is when players actually want to tell a story and enjoy it, we respect of writers, there were just times when not everyone understood and an idiot would come in and ruin things (not always, just sometimes).

Anyway, make it simple and tell anyone who joins to respect the other writers or don't bother.

Umm... hmm... topic.
Fantasy world.  Magic.  Some steampunk.  Scientists and mages are in an intellectual civil war.  Both are convinced they hold the key to the future.  There's a massive war with the rival country.  But soon they realize they don't have a single enemy.  A strange, unidentified force threatens all humanity.  Is it science?  Is it magic?  Write the story and find out.

Ok, you don't have to use that if you don't want to.  But you'd start the story a little before mysteries things start happening.  Everyone joining establishes a character then someone (usually the creator of the thread) starts putting more drama in.  In this case, introduce this strange force.  Don't give everything away - work with other writers to develop what's going on.  For a really good rp, be willing to sacrifice your character for the story.

I wish I could join but I have tons of work and a thesis coming up, so it wouldn't be fair for me to join.
If you can't find people try recruiting friends from the game, or even try from other forums (we've never tried that, but who knows?).  Even invite friends from home and get them to join so they can rp with you.

But first and foremost: have fun. ^_^

Caveat:   This is just my suggestion and based on my experience here - you don't have to listen if you don't like it, but feel free to use the ideas.
