But I find it hard to believe he can't get some of the money back

Here in CA a wife can't dissipate community assets without a good reason, I can't see a gf having more powers than a wife

On the plus side, for the next 100 years, if they tell people they meet how they met, they risk a serious beating

The core joke of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is that of course no civilization would develop personal computers with instant remote database recovery, and then waste this technology to find good drinks.
Steve Jobs has ruined this joke.

I think Chris, that if they were married he would have had more legal foot in ground to sue then he has now. Now (unmarried) he just shouldn't have had a joined account, or at least not all his money =p

this depends on what is her perspective, he might not be telling everything, and money isn't everything, just don't give up and get a new (clean) start I'd say.
