Topic: No More 5 Dollar Bill!

It's true sad

The Royal Canadian Mint is going to phase out the 5-dollar bill and replace it with a three dollar coin sad

I just needed some place to vent my sorrow and my anger at the continuing trend towards coinage instead of light fluffy paperage. How do you Americans avoid having all your paper money turned into coins X(

Metals tend to be worth more than paper?

Re: No More 5 Dollar Bill!

how is that relevant? doesnt that just mean that making more money is a more expensive process, making it less efficient.

But if the economy goes down the pooper, start spending coins!

Re: No More 5 Dollar Bill!

I'm in Kitchener...about an hour outside of Toronto.

Coins are "superior" to bills from a production point of view because you don't need to make as many. Bills wear out and need to be replaced pretty quickly. Coins last for a long time. So you don't need to make as many. In other words, they're cheaper over the long haul.

Re: No More 5 Dollar Bill!

Our government is slow to change currency.  They waited to revamp the bills until Congress was told there were more counterfeit $100 bills in global circulation that legit ones.

They insist on a $1 coin I dunno why.  The Post Office is the main culprit, their machines give it as change.  Nobody's machines take the $1 coin, not even the Post office, the sneaky bastards.

There are Americans who shop with rolls of quarters and dimes, and Americans who shop with sheafs of bills, and the last group WILL NOT be confused with the first...

Protest! Revolt! Make a Facebook group!

Seriously, the only way the Canadian Gov. will listen to people anymore is if a facebook group gets over 40k members in a few days.

Re: No More 5 Dollar Bill!

the U.S one dollar coin will be phased out.   a long time ago the U.S. tries to phase out the one dollar paper bills by making one dollar coins, i think you know the coins, the ones with susan b anthony on them.  we it was a watse of money cuz stupid ppl thought they would be worth something and started to save them! idiots!

now the new coins have i beleive john adams and there is no date of minting on the new coins.  to prevent the hopeful collecting bastards from keeping these one, the government only releases coins into the market by trading them to banks from deterierated paper bills. the difference now is that the last time, the banks purchased these coins they paid for them with any paper bill, the new ones can only be traded with one dollar bills that would normally be sent to be burned and the government seized all paper one dollar production.

the benefits of coinage:

the use of coin money of larger value than a dollar is to reduce inflation and the cost to replace damaged paper money.  since the U.S. dollar is worthless to the world economy atm, it would actualy cost more money to make paper dollars and distribute them than the dollar is actually worth!!!

NOTE: for those of you would may not understand and still have an IC mentality,  just think of it as your bureaucracy being enormously larger than your net income!! yikes

I dont smoke cigarettes because i like them.  I smoke because it hides the smell of marijuana thats seeping into the hallway atm.

I hope you're kidding- you do realize what fiat money is, don't you?

On that note, cheap coins are actually worth more if you melt them down (if that's costless). That is to say, the metal in a penny is worth around 1.7 cents, and the metal in a nickel is worth about 10 cents. Of course, commodity prices fluctuate a lot, but the point is, those coins have become more valuable than the money they represent smile

Re: No More 5 Dollar Bill!

haha, missed the april fools thing. I guess you WERE kidding. That's a relief
