Topic: The Flint jump history

The Flint Jump starts back when I was with Mystical and Vale of Aldur. I was leader, known as B-52 back then. This was round 1 of Milkway I think.

I kinda took a hybrid race due to worries about the skills of our players. Turns out we needed bankers badly due to some sluffers. So I started banking. I razed a lot of excess infra once, made a lot of cf's, LQ's and TO's and spent way less than I thought I should.

This was the moment of thought initially.

Sadly for us we got to 5th ranked, had Spam decide (3rd ranked) not to nap us, showing his way bigger than our fam was going to farm us, so we struck first. It was a glorious war, which ended with us getting the first known woopass on a legend of a banker, and getting our hineys handed to us afterwards.

The next round I hit upon the Flint Jump. I was known as Blaster, and we had a power line up. No longer considered underdogs we were considered contenders, and I set out to prove it. Ara landed in our family, and his banking skills were a considerable addition to our family.

I started out using the market as a profit center. I set aside about 5% of our families starting cash for market play, and watched as it grew, and grew, and grew... amazingly near the end I had 3 billion gc in the market.

I and Ara kept 1st and 2nd in size, 1st and 2nd in nw, 1st and 2nd in income for the first 4 weeks. Ara dropped to 3rd then, but I kept 1st. The server crashed at something like week 8. I kept 1st to week 6, when I started planning a Flint Jump.

Now ara accidently confirmed my idea... he razed a lot of cf's in his attempt to go LQ/TO. We covered it by claiming he got nuked, repeatedly. I calculated the cost of his jump with his old infra intact, and then after the raze jump as well. It confirmed everything.

I was set to start razing when a skirmish began. I decided we were well set as the #1 fam with #3 and #4 allies to get through the skirmish intact. I was set to do the jump with the 3 billion myself, so had stopped growing for about a week and supported growth in the family.

Sadly then the server died... and all info was lost.

When the server came back several weeks later, I found myself with another well made situation. Top allies, we were damned near invinsible. That round Malorean, Spooky, and many other legends were in my alliance. We easily had the top talent short of Spams fam, but we had 3 times. This was leading to a grand war were spam and my fam fought, fought hard, and perm napped.. Then my tri-alliance fought Warsongs alliance, and we crushed them. Warsongs brother, I forget his name, had a baby and was missing from the war. In secret I had done a small flint jump, converting a lot of my infra to lasers for specifically that war. The laser trap with 5k lasers on it destroyed a record 10 fleets and did not fall in that war. I figured after the war there was no challenges so I could raise cash for a real jump, and astonish everyone then.

Then things got interesting. One of my allies started skirmishing with an ally of Spams. My family got involved, suddenly spam broke the perm nap, another ally broke their perm nap, and the famous perm nap war started.

Let me tell you I got fudged up. I had 1% of my infra at the end of that war. It was a glorious war however. As that awol brother of warsongs returned, and he broke his fams perm nap on us for attacking while he was away (honest we did not know!!!!). So we had a 4 versus 3, with not one, not two, but 3 perm naps broken and surprise attained per each.

Yet my family held firm, we fought hard... very hard. The war looked to last the length of the entire round.

So I published the Flint Jump.

At first it met a lot of skepticism. Ryan, a mod back then who was famous for banking, out right said it would not, could not work. I had to work hard to defend that it could work.

The next round my activity was doomed due to loosing my job. I could not do a full flint jump, and ended up lapsing into inactivity and got put down to 1 planet, and logged in just enough to stay in the family. But the Flint jump was proven to work by my Stalwart allies, and the following round saw Flint jumps as the only way to survive... after that it was banned forever.

Contrary to his opinion Nai had nothing to do with any of it's invention nor was he in any of my families or allies families til much later in the game, and then Flint jumps had been banned for a long long time.

Ryan claimed to have made the Flint jump first, seperately of me, but had 'kept it secret' to avoid letting others have it. His family is known to have done an amazing NW jump for the win of the round the round he is said to have invented it, which was the round I almost discovered it... therefore he has a real ability to try to make a claim, of course I never discussed anything with him about the game or in general.

Other claims have come and gone, but the jump has one name attached to it. The name is Flint, and it will remain thus.

The actual jump was simple. There was no building limit on planets back then.

If you saved enough cash and resources, you destroyed all your infra, your fleet, and waited a tick, you could build so much infra, so much cheaper than otherwise, as to be laughable and utterly pwn.

Re: The Flint jump history

this is called the iluvatar jump.

Flint stole it from me and published it under his own name... like a true republican!

<@Nolio> Ilu was the man back in the day,he even made monkeywrench and arganon look good for half a round =p
<@iluvatar> it is my grandest achievement

* Final_Doom is now known as Thanks_Iluvatar

Re: The Flint jump history

I dunno why hes still debating this, this sort of jumping is not in the game anymore. Plenty of players including myself have found loopholes in the gameplay what has lead the changes in the game

Re: The Flint jump history

I did it a couple of times way back when, but I don't remember the round (edit: so I'm not particularly convinced of the above-said claim for inventor). I do have one question...

"The laser trap with 5k lasers on it destroyed a record 10 fleets and did not fall in that war."

They didn't use PI?

Gondor: wtf, im not even mentioned. I was the glue to this family. Thats BS!
Econ: Gondor, if you were the glue, then I was the glue sticky thing that applies the glue.
(edit: I believe that's called the brush).

Re: The Flint jump history

its a lie Econ, like 90% of what flint posts

anyone knows that you build 50k bombers in a big war and if they attacked it 10 times, all their attackers must have had less than 50k bombers togheter, so 5k each at max... makes no sense

Thanks.

I'm still hoping flint lets me know how it happened. Since you are on his ignore list, I have to quote you so that he can use information provided in the most recent posts whilst formulating his reply.

It doesn't count as history if you have to write the damn article yourself.  You're just asking for trolling.

Re: The Flint jump history

To raze and rebuild to gain more infrastructure than you would have otherwise built is hereby named a Starstrike Jump (and yes this was still possible to a lesser extent for several rounds after beta 1).

To calculate the ideal moment to stop building infrastructure and saving for a large EOR jump is hereby called an Inferno Jump.

To play the market on a grand scale is hereby called the Nai's Pendulum.

<end sarcasm>

We would discuss tactics and ideal infrastructure and had our own calculators and guides but we didn't want to post on the forums. We wanted to keep the best players as the people who used their brains the most, that is why that period was 'The Golden Age'. I don't think anybody even knows who i am due to my lack of trumpet blowing but it is alot better than claiming to be a revolutionary. Anyone with half a brain could have worked out every single loophole IC has ever had, its basic mathematics.

Also i specifically remember Ryan saying it wouldn't work on the forum then in chat saying he was trying to make you doubt your theory smile.

Re: The Flint jump history

inferno, meep meep

Re: The Flint jump history

What a load of crap.

Like Inferno mentioned; Saving up, razing infra, and rebuilding all at once was discovered by starstrike back in beta 1 (although it was more to do with getting huge research % than lowering empire-size-building costs)

Stopping building for a few days and then building at once in a small burst of growth as to avoid empire-size-building costs was a common strategy way before infra-jumps came in. Don't know for sure but I think it was Mace who came up with that.

Flint just combined these two strategies and improved on it. He did do a good job there, but in no way did he invent the whole thing himself. But yeah, in the end its just 1 of the countless loopholes in IC that have been found -> exploited -> fixed.

Honestly im surprised Flint still hasnt seen a doctor about his acute case of Attention Seeking Disorder after all these years.

Re: The Flint jump history

lol =p

Combining things to make it appear new or giving something already existing an actual name is a common method of claiming new inventions. It has always been like that as far as I know. Not a bad way either =]

Re: The Flint jump history

It was indeed Flint's idea, I remember being his ally at the time, I believe it was round 4.  Word went out about the Flint jump the following round and the Munchers' alliance did it to a fuller scale, it was ridiculous every top banker had 1 billionish population.  The idea of building at once was just common sense.  Later after the flint jump had changed the game too much a cap was placed on how many buildings could be built at once.  This all happened around the same time as "pop banking".  There were a few players who ONLY built LQs/TOs up until round 2-3, I would say 5/galaxy if not 0.  This was when the ideal race was a bit of everything and IC gameplay was no so family oriented.

Jaguar, thats gotta be the first post out of you ever!!

Re: The Flint jump history

Inferno... hello. I remember you, and your Inferno jump led your family to second place tongue Some silly idea to give all your planets away... as I see it, our ally Heaven came up with the concept to stockpile a shedload of cash, whilst Nothingness was ramping up his construction science score. Unfortunetely, what should have been an amazing 50 million NW jump turned to nought, as Heaven had to go to Boot Camp. His girlfriend took over his account, wasted a fortune on some pointless war in sector 2 and the jump never really happened.
Myself and Xandronia both stockpiled after hearing of Heaven's vast sums of money, and used 'slash and burn' on the final day to get our jumps.

As for 'Flint Jumps'. Very good, well done Flint. I think you can claim credit for "industrialising" a basic concept that many had used before. I recall posting the theory behind the jump in the Strategy forum (Round 3) before the actual round you Flint Jumped (Round 4), in an article that examined various building tactics. The industrial family-sized jumps from Round 5 onward killed the game for the old romantics...  no more could a single brilliant player survive in a family-dominated game.

Re: The Flint jump history

That...sounds like a revolution baby

Not many people know this, but I own the first radio in Springfield. Not much on the air then, just Edison reciting the alphabet over and over. "A" he'd say; then "B." "C" would usually follow...

Re: The Flint jump history

Flint I remember that! I also told you that no matter how much math you use, you can't plan for the unexpected! - Spam

Re: The Flint jump history

lol... this is 2nd from the top? wow, lol.

Yeah well I have lost the love for this game, it's hard for me to love much anymore. Things are temporary distractions. Science is still a love, as is politics and CONSERVATIVE thought.

Spam your right though, math cant cover unexpected unless you try to allow as much as possible for the unexpected (within reason, like Nolio changing who does start strat is unrepairable).

I changed my thinking in the game a long time ago from best case, everyone does what they need to, to worst case, we lose activity of half the family at the worst times. It still came out as stronger than usual fam strats, just never got a chance to try it for real... oh well.
