Topic: Crackers demand $10M for patient database...

According to US media reports criminals have stolen the data of 8 million American patients
from the server of the Virginia Prescription Monitoring Program and replaced the site's
home page with a ten million dollar ransom demand. The server is used for monitoring the
issuing of prescriptions for painkillers such as opiates and aims to prevent drug abuse.

According to Brian Krebs of the Washington Post, the criminals obtained access to the server
through some unknown route, created an encrypted copy of the data, erased the original data
and left the blackmail message. Wikileaks made a copy and have published the demand:

"I have your shit! In *my* possession, right now, are 8,257,378 patient records
and a total of 35,548,087 prescriptions. Also, I made an encrypted backup and
deleted the original. Unfortunately for Virginia, their backups seem to have
gone missing, too. Uhoh :(For $10 million, I will gladly send along the
password."

The server is currently not accessible. Virginia's Department Of Health Professions
say they are already working with investigators and authorities.

Re: Crackers demand $10M for patient database...

Yeah. By the federal Health Insurance Portability and Protection Act (HIPPA) anybody who accesses a medical record without patient authorization, and disseminates it for profit, is guilty of a felony punishable by five years and a $10,000 fine PER RECORD. That's on top of the felonies for extortion, use of national phone lines for commission of a crime, any hacking felony, and whatever a southern state has on the books for this sort of thing. This guy is looking at 215 million years.

But I'm sure this guy is 6'5, knows karate, and would run any prison he's sent to. Not.

If he were smart he'd walk away now. They should pay him and then nail his ass to the wall when he tries to spend it.

And if he is just doing it to make it look like he plans to work with them,... lol

And just think, Obama wants to make that same record system Nation Wide, one huge easily hackable database..

Everything bad in the economy is now Obama's fault. Every job lost, all the debt, all the lost retirement funds. All Obama. Are you happy now? We all get to blame Obama!

Re: Crackers demand $10M for patient database...

the system has been in placed for decades and integrating all the separate databases across many agencies have been a priority since 9/11. So really you should say:

"And just think, Obama wants to CONTINUE TO make that same record system THAT WAS STARTED DURING THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION Nation Wide, one huge easily hackable database."

I object to the idea of such a database, as a security expert I know it's fodder for the hack kiddies.

oh I agree, but this was one of the recommendations of the 9-11 commission.

i thought the same thing tongue it just shows the anti-white bias in today's society, that a word that a word for white people is also a word for certain criminals.

Re: Crackers demand $10M for patient database...

the word is hackers, for people not in the tech industry. technically, "hackers" are people employed by businesses to test their security. crackers are people that crack security without permission of the owner. crackers are criminals, hackers are not.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hacker_(computing)#Controversy_and_ambiguity

that covers the complexity of the word hacker, I think.

"hackers" are people who manipulate a system into doing something it otherwise
shouldn't, couldn't, or wouldn't.

'crackers vs hackers' is a definition added as an after thought.

the point remains that "Hacker" is not the american equivalent of "Cracker" like he claimed it was.

Vs

Re: Crackers demand $10M for patient database...

"no my point was that the def. changes per context and who is actually saying it"

well, that was a pretty irelevant point to make then. its pretty common sense, and no one was ignoring that common sense.

between "hacker" and "cracker" is purely contextual. Thats right, contextual. It would
certainly be useful to note who is using the term as well, as that would indeed be a major
part of the context.

the difference between any word with another word is contextual. Yell claimed in the context of an American, talking about a cracker, they would refer to it as a Hacker, but the context that changes the two words is not the nationality, which was my point.
