Topic: Plane down, Miracle on the Hudson River

On take off, the plane ran into a flock of birds.

Both engines were critically damaged, and at 4000 ft, they both went out.

The Pilot had a dilemma: He could not go back to La Guardia Airport.
1.  try to land the plane at a small airport to the North
2.  Land the plane in the Hudson river.

He figured he may not be able to reach Teterboro Airport, and even then the rate of desent would surely severely damage the plane, and there would be multiple casualties at the minimum....if any would survive.

So, using his Air Force training, and to boot, being a licensed glider pilot, decided to put the plane down in the river.

He dragged the tail through the water as much as he could, and hoped to not crack the fuselage.
The plane held, came in hard, but held.

Emergency Service in NEW YORK CITY is the most efficient and advanced in the world.
The system kicked into gear, and all resources were used to make sure all got to shore safely.

One Woman went into the water, and before a rescue swimmer could even suit up....he jumped in and saved her. (the Hudson River temp is in the upper 30's Lower 40's temp range this time of the year.)

A few minor injuries, no fatalities.  No critically wounded.

Truly a Miracle.

Re: Plane down, Miracle on the Hudson River

Because of America's system of Regional control through its republic, NEW YORK CITY is able to locally control such tragedies.

It is in this reguard that New Orleans should have had a plan in effect to deal with Katrina.

New Yorks first responders are, IMHO, the best in the world.
When there is a disaster, you can be NYC first responders will be there, to gain needed experience, as well as lend their expertise.

Is there any dispute of this ?

Re: Plane down, Miracle on the Hudson River

I bet he voted for OBAMA

Not many people know this, but I own the first radio in Springfield. Not much on the air then, just Edison reciting the alphabet over and over. "A" he'd say; then "B." "C" would usually follow...

Re: Plane down, Miracle on the Hudson River

well.. AIRBUS!!!:D i bet a boing would have broken in 2 pieces....

but very good job from the pilot.. indeed.

Re: Plane down, Miracle on the Hudson River

@Schniepel

As a pilot certified in a couple Boeing models (specifically 737 Next Gen's, which are equivalent to the A320 in terms of workloads), I can tell you that would not happen in a properly executed maneuver. The Airbus' advantage in this case is a special system that seals up all the intakes and vents in the fuselage in the event of a water landing so the cabin may stay afloat long enough to evacuate passengers and crew. The button for activating this system in the 320's flight deck literally says DITCHING on it. My friends that fly Airbuses have told me about it.

Anyway that said: An out-freaking-standing job by the flight crew. The only other "successful" ditchings I remember seeing on the news or otherwise were in a/c with rear-mounted (as opposed to wing-mounted) engines. Very rare is there a ditching that happens with such minimal incident. Top notch job by the flight crew, attendants, and the first-responders.

Re: Plane down, Miracle on the Hudson River

I think the flight crew deserve at least a couple rounds on the house after a performance like that.

Re: Plane down, Miracle on the Hudson River

Seeing as how probable it is Nolio is actually a co worker of his, I'm skeptical.

"...using his Air Force training..."

"Truly a Miracle."

Well which was it, his own skill (combined with good solid engineering*) or Magic Beard Man?

*Boeing could fly upside down if their wings wouldn't shear off during the roll. Airbus can fly upsidedown.

[Edit]
Seriously, why do Americans seem to have have such difficulty with concepts such as luck and skill? Why do they find it so hard to attribute their success to their own abilities? Is it perhaps so that if they fail... I might open a new thread for this.

"So, it's defeat for you, is it? Someday I must meet a similar fate..."

Re: Plane down, Miracle on the Hudson River

Why is this politics? Other than unfounded BW propaganda that the New York emergency services are the best in the world.

Re: Plane down, Miracle on the Hudson River

I suppose science topics do not belong in the politics forum, either, yet I have not seen you pose any such questions in them. If you took a closer look at the forum index, you would notice the little line below the word Politics that says "Discuss real-world [sic] topics here".
