Topic: (Metal) music and religion

Yesh, another stupidous thread inviting them wicked minds to flame away tongue

so, i was wondering how people feel about metal music and religion smile
i mean, can you be a metalhead and a good christian ? and vice versa?

the inspiration for this is a collegue of mine, who takes pride in her taste of music.. but at the same acts like practising christians are being victomised by everyone and that people shouldnt have a problem with them tongue (no one at my work place has a problem with christians, the ones who are practising a bit more just think they re cooler than the other people)

on topic, the kid likes to see herself as the "alternative one", the cool one, etc tongue (yes, listening to metallica and wearing "special"shoes and scarf really makes you cool and rebel-ish tongue )

but at the same time she d prolly be damned before she d wear a machine head t shirt or something o_O

so i wonder wether she only listens to certain songs, and wether she understand the lyrics..and stuff..

ah well, flame away smile

till the end of time..

Re: (Metal) music and religion

Depends on the music. tongue Some music glamourizes immoral behavior and even praises it.

But it's not like there's any bad material in my Blind Guardian collection or my Demons & Wizards CDs.

[I wish I could obey forum rules]

Re: (Metal) music and religion

So the fact tha it says demons and wizards doesnt bother you then smile? ( i know loads wouldnt bothered, but some are, also with stuff like D&D)

till the end of time..

Re: (Metal) music and religion

W00t.. Blind Guardian are known in the US? wooho.

basically metal is not metal.. i saw report about "christian metal" lately.. which is metal praising jesus.
sure there also is metal praising satan..
there is metal praising alcohol...

can not make a general statement i guess.

I still love going to punk concerts.. I am a [w00f!] elitist though...

Re: (Metal) music and religion

its an interesting topic nem, but like schniepel said, metal is to broad. I like metal myself but there is a lot of metal I dislike.

Re: (Metal) music and religion

in any case you can't be a good christian and love the lyrics from for instance Slayer. You can be a good christian and love his music, thats something else.

Re: (Metal) music and religion

you can love metal, you can love the lyrics, and you can be a good christian. there is no commandment "though shall listen to no metal".

Re: (Metal) music and religion

If the lyrics are "Saataaaaaaan blaaaaaaa riiiiiiisseeeee" which kind of happens in metal...
I dont really know if thats something a good christian shall support:P

Re: (Metal) music and religion

What about Christian black metal?

Re: (Metal) music and religion

lol@schniepel
@arfeh:
maybe post a youtube

Re: (Metal) music and religion

( off topic, huzzah!! for BG tongue )

some would argue the very nature of metal , the roughness etc, is in contrast with the peace you re supposed to be feeling and radiating to others so that they will turn to god as well.. smile

and yup, i know is t really broad smile especially nowadays smile loads of "dake" metal as well tongue

till the end of time..

Re: (Metal) music and religion

I think that you can be a good christian and listen to metal, as long as you're careful to watch what you are listening to. Metal itself is not wrong, it's simply the lyrics that are in most metal songs. Then again, there are some country songs with more explicit lyrics than some metal songs. I would say, don't generalize genres, but rather, decide based on the lyrics of the songs. there are some great christian metal bands out there smile

Re: (Metal) music and religion

i wasnt talking about the christian metal bands  smile

Re: (Metal) music and religion

im not really a metal fan. but i enjoy jimi hendrex, i like purple haze, i know what the lyrics are talking about and me enjoying to listen to Purple Haze doesnt mean im supporting drug use. same thing is true with christians and metal with Satan. the idea that you have to support the idea the lyrics present of the songs you like, especially when its metal, is a joke. i like the song "baby's got back" but i dont find big butts particularly attractive...

Re: (Metal) music and religion

Very true avogadro. Something i can agree with you on.

Morbo: Morbo can't understand his teleprompter. He forgot how you say that letter that looks like a man with a hat.
Linda: It's a 't'. It goes "tuh".
Morbo: Hello, little man. I will destroy you!!

Re: (Metal) music and religion

In my opinion what kind of music you listen to doesnt have anything to do with whats in your heart. If your a good person, your a good person regardless of the music you listen to. If your a christian then you know that God can see into your heart and soul. Only you and God knows what kind of person you really are.

I would also like to say that lot of christians put too much stock into rites, rituals and the dogma of the church. You dont need to be at a certain building at a specific time on a certain day to love God. You can love god anywhere, anytime.

And yes...i listen to metal music....alot! but i also have a good relationship with god.

The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he, who in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee!!

i agree with you on that smile

Re: (Metal) music and religion

Define a good christian.  Depending on where you set that line what is considered acceptable behaviour varies.

There are 10 kinds of people in this world, those who understand binary and those who don't.

Re: (Metal) music and religion

I listen to Woven Hand, that often has religious lyrics, but that doesn't make me a christian tongue

God: Behold ye angels, I have created the ass.. Throughout the ages to come men and women shall grab hold of these and shout my name...

Re: (Metal) music and religion

@nemeara:
yes you can love me anytime as long as you stay 1m away. tongue

Re: (Metal) music and religion
