Topic: The full faith of the EURO is exposed

Its a fine and dandy Idea....

As a fan of the Free-Market, the idea of an economic alliance, formed in Europe is really a good Idea.

Now, I understand, that eventually, this is supposed to be a counter to the dollar.  And there is no reason to believe that this will be the case some day.

BUT......look what happened this month.
These really are trying times.
this is a lesson to you younger investors...you future entrepreneurs.

Take note of this past year, this past month, and then this past 2-weeks.
If you are in the markets, and you see the Govt. looking to bailout out the financial system....
when you see banks collapsing, investment houses overnight being purchased, because they are in financial trouble.....sell.  Get out of the markets...

Where do you go ?
You go to safety, you go to stability.  You go where you KNOW your money will be safe.

Once again....that place is the Dollar.
US Treasuries....US treasury backed securities.

It could have been Euro banks.
It CERTAINLY wasnt Chinese banks, or RUSSIAN banks, or INDIAN banks.....as you all wish to say what economic super-powers these countries are.

Its basically only a lesson in truths here.......but, to be honest I am proud about it as well....as an American.
I am not happy about my govt....for sure.
I am not happy how individuals, knowing this could happen....still let it happen.
I didnt see it coming.

This week, the Govts of Germany, France, Great Britain, Ireland, Iceland, Canada, Australia, etc.......Asian players as well....w/o mentioning them all.
All went in their own direction.....all did there own thing.

BUT....The Euro basis countries did not work as a solid coordinated group.
they did there own thing.
Germany did one thing, France did nothing, Ireland, Spain, Greece...etc.....all on their own.

GB tied solidly to the Euro did there own thing......

How can one find comfort in the Euro ??
No one did.....the Euro basically tumbled.
Oil Tumbled on the strength of the dollar....coupled w/percieved future lower demand.

Even a mentioned OPEC meeting to cut production did nothing.
After all, OPEC has shown itself to be uncoordinated, and not to faithfully follow their own mandates.

So.....to cap......

In this turbulent market....
Russia markets collapse, and close their markets for 2 days.
Iceland basically wathces their currency become worthless.
The Euro based countries have abandoned their economic alliance for self preservations
OPEC shows they have no dominate effective power over the market on news release only.

THE DOLLAR shows itself as THE Currency for the world to grasp when comfort is needed.

Re: The full faith of the EURO is exposed

and now, you wait a month even two months, even three months
and then you buy at rates that are seriously frigin unbelievable

i'm jumping up and down in happiness, cuz i know that when i'm 40 or so, this is guna make me stinkinnnn richh big_smile

Re: The full faith of the EURO is exposed

How the hell do you figure the currency is the factor playing here BW?

Currency is not a determining factor in this story. This is about credits. Credit crunch. Can you see where that's coming from? You're also missing some rather large chunks of news concerning ECB and national banks it seems to me.

And tumbling? Well. In 2002 and 2003 there was parity. In 2004 and 2005 it was 1.2. In 2006 and 2007 it was 1.3. In 2008 it was 1.4.peaking to 1.5. Back to 1.3 to 1.4 now. Not really a firm ground for your thesis neither.

Is this just a misplaced attempt at gloating as a form of reflex while things are crashing down causing rubble to clear for a decade to come? Things have only just begun BW, you're a bit early on jumping to conclusions. Or do you think bank and finance is all the economy consists of perhaps?

Re: The full faith of the EURO is exposed

It seems to me BW's point is to state the strength and influence of the dollar in a time of crisis, which is way bigger than the euro.

Quite a fair statement in my book, and as long as it will be (the only one) tied to the oil I don't see this power changing to another currency.

The euro is still very young, despite his phenomenal devlopment.

Re: The full faith of the EURO is exposed

yeah great.. US dollar is great

BUT i can't help but think that if we had a president who people actually listened to, than how the panic at wall street we're seeing, would atleast be kept to a minimum level..
like bush has come out to make a speech just about everyday, and it hasn't helped one bit
only if.. this crisis would atleast have been kept to a minimum and not spiral out of control like it has for weeks now..

Yet another great of example of how Americans are thick enough to still glorify and believe in a system that ass rapes them over and over again.

Re: The full faith of the EURO is exposed

dollar pwns euro because our issuing goverment is constitutionally bound to pay its debts without a default

now, based on this socialist bs of a bailout, I believe when it hits the fan, we'll pay out but then pass a 99% tax on bond payments

When you need a safe haven.......what part of that, did you miss in my first post ??

Where has your money been safe in all this mess?

US Treasuries.  Period.

The Euro was over 1.55 from Mar to Sept.  Its high was over 1.6 in April.

It has since crashed to 1.35.....and is in free fall.
Oil has fallen from 1.5 to .79

The Dollar has been the strength through this all.

If you cant see this....then what can I say ??

Re: The full faith of the EURO is exposed

I find what the russians do with their stock markets very funny big_smile they just keep closing it. Perhaps they should remove the stock market altogether? LOL i wouldnt be surprised if Russia turns more towards communism because of this mess. I mean, you and i both know that communism doesn't work but as far as the average russian sees it, it is the only way out.

Also you brought up the indian markets. They collapsed 60%. The indian rupee went down 25% against the dollar. This makes me happy since i am an indian and i live in the Us. i could send money back to india right now and it would be 25% more than 1 month ago.

China... I dont know whats happeneing there?

Japan... holy shit nikkei down 10%

Europe... like Japan except now we actually see what the EU really is. It is just an economic alliance for good times and not for bad. In good times they will make decisions together and grow in strenght but when everything comes tumbling down everyone fends for themself. This is the advantage the US has over Europe.

I think the US has actually been the strong hand in difficult times. This has restored my faith in the American economy.

Re: The full faith of the EURO is exposed

LOL
Who's the bonehead fool that was buying garbage when I was telling you a year ago that its all crap?

I can see you living in one of those hoovervilles (soon to be called Bushvilles) in the near future and blaming everything on those damn Euros.

GM said bankruptcy is not an option, that means "Please bail us out or we will go bankrupt"

Re: The full faith of the EURO is exposed

BW, the EU is super young alliance.. every country has its own lil unique banking system. thus makes it impossible to do one big european rescue operation. each country needs to fullfill the lil differences in each system so a national way may turn out to be way more effective then one european sollution. it has to be done with a lot of cooperation between EU members and i dont really believe that is happening.

Re: The full faith of the EURO is exposed

i think you are sort of overlooking pound sterling
not that many people using it (compared to other currencies) but over all much more stable than the dollar and the euro

NEE NAW NEE NAW

Primo

Re: The full faith of the EURO is exposed

No BW, I really can't see how the dollar has been the strenght in this all. European governments followed suit in the bailout of the sector, a sector worth less now, and the consequent adaption of the currency doesn't really come as a huge shock. A dollar however that doesn't change value while Rome is burning, strikes me as artificial.

See past your pride about that $ of yours, it's far, far from over.

@ Han

Actually, I believe you were preaching doom and gloom a while longer than that.

The thing is.....where were you ?
[flaming]

Me ?  I will be fine.  I still have quite a few years left until Im ready to retire.....and all this is, is a great time to get into the stock market.
Its all it is.

@Schniep.....
I guess we agree......sort of.  The EU is a young alliance of OLD centuries old enemies.
100 years ago, Germany and France were building up for the big war.....60 years ago they were gearing up to do it all over again.
10 years ago, they form the EURO, and anchor a loose economic alliance.

The first sign of trouble, and a need to pull together, and they toss the EURO in the trash by all going their separate way.

As I stated before this was a critical time for the EURO as a currency, the European alliance to REALLY shine.....and they blew it.

All who mocked and laughed at Great Britain for not joining the system.........  THIS is why Great Britain didnt join the system.  They know.

BTW.....the "pulling together" was AFTER the fact.....and it took President GEORGE BUSH to get the G-7 members in line.

Re: The full faith of the EURO is exposed

Euro going lower is a good thing for both US and EU. Or at least it is now. It will boost EU export and prevent oil from going skyhigh, buying US some time to solve things (cheaper oil.)

and yeah, nationalism is the reason EU isn't what it should be. hmm

YEP, i'm so excited tongue
i just wish i had more money to buy more stocks X(
but i wouldn't do it next week, i wanna wait atleast a month
it's still too unpredictable

and Yell -- why buy GM when there are stocks around the same price as GM but are actually valued at like 5 times more than what GM is valued at

Re: The full faith of the EURO is exposed

I beleived that we should buy large amounts of stocks when we had the 777 point loss a while ago. I was wrong. So we can't really know for sure. A lot of peple say we reached the bottom but others are saying theres still more pain in the stock market to come.

I will go with the safe side and wait 2-3 weeks.

I think it is really sad that GM is about to close down. I am not an economics major or MBA but i would start closing down large amounts of factories and lay off lots of people. Try to get the cost down to a minimum and basically start all over again.

Re: The full faith of the EURO is exposed

"Never try to catch a falling knife." Stock exchange cliche. Don't buy yet guys. Or at least employ a very, very careful exit strategy.

Re: The full faith of the EURO is exposed

Another cliche is "no-one rings a bell at the bottom". Just start accumulating from here in small amounts and it's hard to go wrong in the medium-term. Sellers do seem to be starting to get exhausted...noobs.

Re: The full faith of the EURO is exposed

GM is probably worth ten times what is now, if I had a thousand shares every dollar it went up would make me $1000

And I'm sorry to say it is because GM has political clout the Congress or the state governments it operates in will give it the loans to keep operating. No matter what.

Dumbasses can't keep a sense of proportion...Suppose GM went under and filed Chapter 11? Thats a reorganization bankruptcy, the Court decides what creditors get paid and how much while GM still sells cars. After a few years the Court wraps that up ans GM goes on as usual.

Suppose GM cant afford that and some creditor files a hostile chapter 7 dissolution bankruptcy. Then its assets are sold off. Perhaps some other carmaker would like some first-rate factories with a ready workforce?  Maybe not, the way Michigan thinks it can tax its way out of recession-- but there's an obvious answer to that too.

The current plan to bailout everybody "too big to fail" is that the govt becomes a partner in failure. CA is nearly there, we're offering $4 billion in bond sales against next July, tax free, and not finding takers. Everybody knows our state is on the brink of default, nobody trusts it even that far. We're actually living month to month here, and with the recession coming that won't last.

That's inevitable when the state is treated like a bottomless pile of gold. But saying so is just "ideology".
