They took over Bear Sterns, they are now taking over Washington Mutual, in both cases for an amazing discount.

Im thinking they are building a super bank, if they can provide the liQuidity, and when times get better, this mega holdingcompany can end up having just made some of the best deals of the century..

Washington Mutual was a huge move for them. Though I'm not surprised. Washington Mutual's owners didn't seem to be doing much with the company to compete with the other major banks. It's no surprise to me that they had to sell everything

When you join the Federal Reserve you have to meet certain rules about assets to liabilities.  They were too short of cash and they were in chronic trouble.  Just lucky for the Feds that JP Morgan wanted to buy right away, or the Federal Reserve would have to run it until somebody offered.

In exchange for those rules they get Federal insurance of their deposits and the Federal Govt cracks down on competitors who refuse to obey.

umm isnt the federal reserve a private company anyway, so any action they do cant be seen as the 'government' doing anything
