Yeah =/ I'm still wrestling with the balance between readability and vertical space. I don't have a solution for this yet but I'm experimenting with a few things.

It could but we'd sacrificing the tapping space. That's one of the general challenges with the new design is that mobile friendly means having larger click areas.
I think a better solution is cleaning up that menu itself. I have plans to make it configurable such that you can remove links that you don't use, rearrange the order, etc. That should help quite a bit.
