Re: EU lowers targets "bio"-fuel

The European commission lowers the target from 10 to 5 % of total amount of bio-fuel to be used against 2020.

I think that's a good step, better would be 0% but ok. It show people start to realize the madness of this.

Re: EU lowers targets "bio"-fuel

Oil is gonne run out at some point in time. Working to a product that can replace part of it is only a positieve thing.
Seeing as these developments will take time to reach productive levels, its importent to start ahead of time. That way, you avoid a real oil crisis, seeing as you already have developed proper alternatives.
.
The drop in the goal is a obvious choice due to the current economic state in Europe. Most nations have other matters to attent to (and spend money on).
.
Safe bet is the goals will be screwed back up when the economy starts to get back in track

Re: EU lowers targets "bio"-fuel

Simple solution....

Don't force production that is more costly than current benchmarks.

Instead make a rewards program where first with proof of met benchmarks gets a reward.

It works well for DARPA.

In fact evidence is easy to see.... driverless vehicles.

DARPA made a simple course vehicles were to navigate without drivers. First prize was for crossing finish line first. All who crossed line after would still get a small compensation.

No one completed it the first time, but some came close,

DARPA ran it again next year. I think three succeeded.

They then made identification of street signs required and laws obeyed. This too was beaten.

Then drive in military traffic, avoid peds, follow laws, street lights, navigate around accidents....

Introducing the Google Car.... and more like it.

The Space X prize also method also works.

Forcing compliance with expensive (beyond market conditions) ideas is wrong and way to costly.

Re: EU lowers targets "bio"-fuel

i agree forcing may be wrong. However i do feel it needs to be stimulated (yes, by governments)
.
In the current economic climate many companies will need to cut funding to some fields, and experimental fields are often the first ones to feel to blow. Government should take over some of these duties.

Re: EU lowers targets "bio"-fuel

biofuel costs more oil then it saves and lowers the amount of food production. So it creates the crisis it needs to prevent.

To make it a real alternative you need to find a way to produce it cheap first.

If you would only invest 0.01% of the cost of this madness in science you would go forward a lot. So einstein +1

Re: EU lowers targets "bio"-fuel

Let me be clear here, I'm not against recycling oil, biomass or stuf like that as long as the ROEI is ok and its economically viable. But when you go large scale, it often isn't.

Re: EU lowers targets "bio"-fuel

biomass should be achieved with algae, the reason its done with crops is to benefit corporations

American landfills have to spend $$$$ to kill off algae that grow on vents

The point is to develop these technologies now, which takes a investment, in order to have a effecient product in the future.

Its about looking ahead more then a 4 year electorate campain

The DARPA method produces results for far cheaper than your method ilu.

Re: EU lowers targets "bio"-fuel

Dirty Iluvatar, it's not government's role to impoverish people paying for garbage before the technology is there. You're saying that the poor should pay more today to pay for expensive and inefficient fuels because oil may run out in coming centuries. Great foresight.

Government doesn't invest as well as free people in free markets. Look it up. Literally every example on earth verifies this claim. The notion that government needs to tax the crap out of fuel and decrease anyone's standard of living for the sake of government-run investment is absolutely idiotic and harmful to every part of society--especially the poor.
