Well ok I am merely middle class... but I will tell you... I have been poor and eating top ramen for dinner, bologni and bread for lunch, and macaroni and cheese for breakfast....

While it is hard work, I get all the perks a very decent income can provide.

I have a laptop worth more than my last three cars (and my current car, though I could buy better I do not see a need right now to do so), I can order pizza whenever I want and NOT ask about the price, I can buy video games as they suit my fancy (four this month alone), and... well you get the point.

I have a constant pocket cash of between $300 to $600 now...


So why does it seem like I am bragging? Trust me I am not.


I am trying to show the benefits of hard work, and of chasing your dream. Being lazy is not a dream, nor is living day by day on crap food.

Find something that motivates you (for me Lipo and Dental [planning a medical trip to Thailand, going to be cheap and fun at the same time!], new clothes, high end laptops, a political campaign, a doctorate [or four], being able to not worry about bills or being homeless again all combined keep me going hard!)

Each person is ultimately responsible for their own success, their own dreams, what they do to reach their dreams.


My job is the hardest I ever had. Even the army was easy compared to this one. But this job, despite so many challenges, makes it so I can reach my dreams.

You should not shy away from the disgusting, the difficult, the complex, the tiring... instead you should think of how that position can advance you to meet your dreams!



One last thought. Be not jealous of the successful... instead join them.



Now pardon me as I plan two weeks in Thailand come January.

Flint, btw, why the hell do you keep $300 in your pocket? That's an invitation for theft. The sensible thing to do is to purchase nearly everything with a credit card, and then pay off your entire balance at the end of the month. That way you won't lose your money if your credit card gets stolen, and you can more easily track your expenses.

I think Flint is just confused, thinking something along the lines of "Those stupid plastic things are worthless! Smart people use cash or check." It's a common error among older Americans.

When I go out, I only carry cash or my debit card when I need to. And the only time I carry $300 or more is when I am using adult services, like strip clubs.

Part of it is the fact I drive.

ATM's do go down, some places (fruit stands and chow wagons for instance) do not have credit card swipes, lumpers do not take credit cards (a lumper is some one who unloads my trailer for me), my credit card has been shut down 3 times for ending up on some list of stolen credit card numbers (no money has ever gone missing) and sometimes when your stuck due to weather an ATM will run out of money.

I know of two truckers with at least $5,000 in bolted down locked safes in their trucks. Me... I do have a fire proof safe with important documents in it in my truck.

CCW  permit, unless your in California. I believe the utah non resident has pretty much all states minus Cali reciprocal agreements. Hell Arizona has constitutional carry think Montana right behind it

I am seriously disgusted by this thread, you need to learn how to stop being so full of yourself Flint. To me rich is having a fullfilling life with ppl who likes hanging out with you, having good friends, a decent family who cares. If you had "bragged" bout that, it would have been interesting. WHO gives a rats ass bout how much money u have AND if your giving ppl advice! I would never take advice from a person who doesnt even have the self discipline to have a proper weight and be able to look decent when hes a politican!

I believe the intent is to not boast, but to show about living below your means. How hard work and living a simple life is the true key to financial happiness. That's what caused such problems in the economy today. Too many people living above their means, and living paycheck to paycheck. Simplify your expenses, get out of debt, and plan for the future. If you can do such things, you'll be richer than any of the "1%" ever will be.

Saying that, stay on topic. Being "rich" doesn't mean anything about sexual favors or healing in Thailand.

Hard job means you are so tired when you go home that you barely have time and strengh to get a bite to eat and sleep 3 or 4 hours until your next workin' day.

Driving a truck isn't easy work either. It's taxing on the mind and body both, so I give him that. Having the hardest job he's ever had, doesn't mean it's not difficult. It's all relative. You're right, there are more difficult jobs out there. I'd hate to be a welder working 18 hour days on the artic tundra, 7 days a week for a year, even if it does pay $500k a year.


Also, who in the hell works on the railroad for $1 a day? Even the chinese won't work that cheap.

This thread was designed to show that if you try you can fix your life situation. I mean look at me.. I am past depresssion and even able to let crap comments about my weight not bother me.

I drive for 11 hours, and every other day sit at a shipper or reciever, averaging another three hours. You have to be constantly on alert in traffic and be able to endure hours of boredom (staring at a road making sure you stay in lane) when there is no traffic.

I sleep most of my ten hours off and much of the time at shippers/recievers.

One mistake, one nap while driving ends it. You cannot stop for long lunches, most of the food is crappy, long waits between possible stops for bathrooms (even when you have a b ad stomache flu), the weather changes are brutal (I was in 120 degrees two days ago at the start of the day, 35 degrees at the end of the day), you DO NOT HAVE A FIXED SLEEP SCHEDULE (caps on purpose, this is where most drivers have the worst problem... ruins your circadic (sp?) Schedule), cops want to ticket you (odds are you won't be around to challenge it and high priced tickets), break downs can be brutal (water hose in middle of a desert), and I can go on.

The turn over rate in this industry is one of the highest period. Fast food has a lower turn over, telemarketing gets run over by our turnover.

Then there are the four wheel drivers (what we call all non-semi truck traffic). They cut you off, the stop suddenly for no reason, they swerve, they race to keep you from changing lanes in front of them, the enter or exit the highway at really slow speeds, they don't pay attention, and they get pissed off when you force (safely) your way over to avoid having an accident. That is quite stressfull for many new drivers.

I would be willing to bet $3000 you would not last three months driving a big rig like me.

For the record a parking ticket and a minor speeding ticket in California (8mph over speed limit) cost me $1,100.

I hate California.

Your point has no connection. The freight industry being connected so slave labor in Africa is one hell of a jump. While we are at it, then why don't we blame American consumerism on the rise of Chinese sweatshops.


The problem with Africa, and their struggle, is their own people. They cannot have the choice to work or have a better life because their own people keep them down. On top of that, hardly any of them know of a better life so they just accept it. Is it wrong? Hell yes. Is it fixable? Hell yes. Is it the fault of every other hardworking person who's been given the opportunity to excel in life? Hell no.
