Re: Road trip through America
Everything Stone Cold said is complete non-sense. Well not entirely, but he is exaggerating the cost a bit... Don't sleep in major cities unless it is your last option, and mention some specific cities so i can tell you how safe they are ![]()
I would recommend 4-5k for money. (including flight)
Search Trip advisor and Orbitz for decent deals. also, try avoiding California as it is expensive as hell. Coming from NZ your tendency would be to fly to LA, if you can get a slightly more expensive flight to another city and rent a car from there and stuff, i would recommend it.
You can stay at a hotel for like 50-60 dollars a night. Some hotels to look into (and i would book in advance!) are Microtel, Motel 6, Econolodge, and sometimes Best Western. These won't be lavish accomodations but they will be good clean private places to sleep and sometimes a free breakfast (although the breakfast is usually nothing exciting)
Gas varies like crazy. keep in mind, to drive one way across the US takes well over 2 days, and that is not including time to stop and sleep. so it really depends what cities and states you would like to see. Gas where I live now is only $3.40 a gallon, back home in the Northeastern corner it is well over $4. in California it could be close to $5. Likewise, the price to rent a car varies like crazy, I work at a car rental company in rural Virginia, and it is only $200 a week to rent. California will cost over $500 a week, and ofcourse this all varies on how many miles a day you are driving, if u get unlimited miles, insurance, etc...
One thing i will definitely advice against is taking the public trains, unlike in Europe, u cannot get to very many cities by train unless you follow the Pacific or Atlantic coasts. besides: coverage is spotty at best, and trains here are expensive and always late. No American uses the train to get anywhere far away unless they are stupid. Another idea, Bus companies are much cheaper, you have to run on their schedule which sucks, but it is much cheaper than train or car.
I hope i have helped you! Also, a word to the wise, stay out of places like Alabama or West Virginia or Wyoming. People there are uneducated hillbillies who will assume you're a terrorist because your family is of Pakistani descent. Especially after catching Osama in Pakistan recently...
Hope this helps.
