Topic: English Language discussion of Belgian Elections

I didn't know there was anything going on

there's more talk of Van Der Sloot getting accused ofa nother murder in Peru than your elections

is there any chance of a strong national govt?

Re: English Language discussion of Belgian Elections

Short answer no, not a chance.

Even though there is compulsory voting in belgium, over 12% is not going to show up. another 10% is planning on voting blanco. I think it shows the people are more than fed up with the situation, and have lost faith in a decent solution.

P.S. Joran Van Der Sloot is dutch, not much to do with Belgium.

Re: English Language discussion of Belgian Elections

Belgian federal elections are the 13th of June. Dutch national elections are held on the 9th.

Which one are you refering to? Joran van der Sloot is Dutch.

Re: English Language discussion of Belgian Elections

Why are you concerned with the obscurity of Belgian politcs? tongue

Anyhow, I doubt there will be a strong national goverment. The old problems andgrudges still exist and I don't see an easy or fast solution.

Re: English Language discussion of Belgian Elections

I have my hopes up, things are hard to predict. People are indeed fed up with it and want to see solutions. That allows parties on both sides of the language border to make concessions about the BHV problem. Once that's been solved, the rest will follow..
Politicians over here are quite odd beings. Last legislation's two greatest political enemies (Bart De Wever and Joelle Milquet get along rather well in private. They went to a Star Wars exhibition together). That's just an example of the way politics are regarded here. There are grudges no doubt, but at the same time they're able to bridge gaps where you wouldn't expect them.

This country just isn't anything for you Flint, no need to be sour about it.

Brussels is an apple of discord. Things aren't as bad as it is shown on most Flemish media. I've lived there for some time and I must say the situation overall is a lot better than Antwerp..

I was trying to be humorous about stereotypes of American disinterest/knowledge in things European.

You succeeded in the stereotype part though!

Do you mean that immigrants misbehave even more so in Antwerp? Or do you mean the lower classes that work in the harbour? I suppose in part it can be compared to Rotterdam.

Re: English Language discussion of Belgian Elections

Best is to split up Belgium in 3 parts: Flandern, Walloon and Eupen-Malmedy. The first two may create new states and Eupen-Malmedy joins germany (again).

The harbour of Antwerp is a magnet to all sorts of criminal activities. Antwerp has a proportional larger population of drug addicts as well.

You take language as the only means of measure. That's not correct, as Switzerland clearly shows. Belgians across the language border have more in common with eachother than with their neighbours. Most of them don't seem to realise that. There is a sense of timid  Belgianness (and exactly that form is Belgian), but it only surfaces when we're abroad. tongue

Re: English Language discussion of Belgian Elections

lol yeah it's all the fault of the walloons lol.

flemish politicians are acting like puppets of the waloons jesus.

splitting isn't a good idea though; 1 we are already a small country, 2: language wise brussels is a part of flanders but a lot of ppl in there speak french;

and history has shown us that if you force a certain population to learn a certain language as their mother language they are not happy, will revolt and eventually join walloons and we do need brussels lol.

That reminds me of the Belgian general who planned a coup d'etat, but failed cause he sent his weapons to Brussels by train, wich obviously ran into a delay..

for the record though I believe that the NV-A's election victory will be smaller than is predicted in the pre-election polls, Belgian polls are notoriously unrealiable

Re: English Language discussion of Belgian Elections

as good polls should!

Re: English Language discussion of Belgian Elections

polls are unreliable by default..

A strong N-VA is in many ways a good thing, but they shouldn't be part of the actual government now. It's probably best for everyone if they chose to be in the opposition.
BHV will be split more easily, a state reform would be easier etc. The N-VA has chances to mature and could become a full fledged party in the next elections. I fear they still lack a bit of subtile politics. They'd make great opposition though!
Don't get me wrong, I rather like the N-VA. I'd never vote for them, but they're a proper party that drains all the lost votes on silly parties like VB and LDD. And it realizes concessions have to be made. I'd never vote for them though (well, I'd rather vote them than VLD).

God: Behold ye angels, I have created the ass.. Throughout the ages to come men and women shall grab hold of these and shout my name...

Re: English Language discussion of Belgian Elections

Its good VB has many votes. It makes sure votes from stupid people don't count.

"polls are unreliable by default.."
Every time I try to tell somebody that they often say: "polls are unreliable but there is some truth in it". Then usually follows a brilliant conclusion explaining the result.

Re: English Language discussion of Belgian Elections

A totally unrelated note, Dutch elections.

Exit poll prognosis;

VVD (Right-wing Libertarians) and PvdA (Social Democrats) shared first place. PVV (Populist, Right Wing) is the third party. The Christian Democrats are the big losers today.

The forming of a governing coalition will be interesting.
