@the yell:
Its a long story but but I give you the short version: he passed one vote after another to escape a sentence. But he was found guilty on a lot of crimes. That he connections with the maffia is prooven. In most european countries this would kill your political carreer, and I bet the same counts for the US. But the guy controls the biggest part of the media so he get away with it. He profiles himself as a "self-made" man, wich is ok i.m.o. but not if you got your money trough crime.
@fokker:
"And yet WW1 started in exactly the same way; and assassination of one undesirable leader."
You said so, but still you need more for a direct comparison.
"Regardless of society and tech the situations could play out very similarly."
Nobody can predict the future but some factors can be discussed about. In general I think nationalistic feelings are much lower as during that age. Also, todays opinion about war, and history books in school makes a future war less likely to happen. Before WW1, most stories about war were heroic. After 2 world wars, most true stories about war in europe discribe hell. Also think about the way most involved countries were ruled at the time. Far les democratic and free as it is now.
Not going into the way they make warfare now and the role of the media.
Its an intresting idee, but drawing direct conclusions would be one step to far.
Justinian,
Keep in mind the circumstances during the roman age can't be compared to our age as well. In theory, leaders can have far more control over subjects as during the roman age. They can control every aspect of life. Propaganda tools are much better. The roman tactic was to keep the mob friendly (by both threatening and pleasing).
fokker,
The situation isn't comparable to pre-www1 situations. Before world war one everybody thought war was a game to name something. The social situation was completely different.
With Berlusconi being re-elected I was wondering wheter or not a coup would succeed. I'm not talking about a military coup but a slow change to a dictatorship. Not only does he control most of the Italian media system all by his own, but he also controles the public media because of his political status. That makes up for 90% of the total media system. That feels like the USSR to me. He excluded himself from responsability to the italian law system. He was convicted several times, hell this guy is even part of the mafia, wich is prooven. But every time he passed one law after an other wich gave him the possibility to escape the Italian justice system. Whats your though on it?
Please don't turn it into a left/right debate. I'm convinced it would work with an extreme left populist as well.
Am I the only one being pragmatic here?
There is no legal system anywhere in the world who has a righteous and just system unless your morals are flexible 100%. The reason we trial people mostly is to prevent others from doing the same and the person to do it again. We need to label the person "bad" or "evil" to justify our actions for ourselfs and the people around us. Ironicly, this system is "just" in the way that it prevents crime from hapening. And it works.
The second reason is revenge but also the control over it.
I think BW is right in this one. I more or less found the same order BW used on wiki, but I agree wiki isn't much of a proof. Maybe someone should post a decent link and clearify this once and for all.
Maybe we should take the discussion to some wider extend and debate about the possibility of a coup anytime, and also in european countries. What would happen if a coup is succesfull? I.m.o. it would make litle difference if it were an extreme left or right wing or just plain old dictatorship. What would happen if eg itally would fall into the hands of berlusconi? What will he do to the other countries?
your girlfriend.
lol@east.
Prices will raise if you do so. File sharing is the markets answere to unaturally high prices some compagnies are allowed to make because they have a monopoly. They have a monopoly by law. How stupid can we be?
Property rights is justifiable till a certain degree but not that far. If you absolutely need to control copy rights that much you should set a maximum price as well. Its mostly not the creator or performer who gets the jackpot anyway.
"All I smell is cheap political opportunism."
you can smell that in any party in any country. Welcome to planet earth.
actually, there is no good sollution to this one. Compagnies want to empty the barrel till there is non left if only it fills their bancaccounts, there is no denial in that. And ofcourse they'll lie about the real numbers. But there is no real alternative. If you let one or another institution control it, its bound to be corrupt, with a huge chance it will corrupt other branches of politics as well.
I feel like a lazy, uneducated, dumb person but can you sumarise this one for me? I have 2 jobs and evening school so I can't read very long intros unless I read nothing else. Nothing personal to you.
"Are not hydrogen fuel cells smarter than fossil fuel combustion engines?"
not atm.
"Nuclear power has a few millenia left on the clock"
if you talk about nuclear fussion. Otherwise, the current supplies could deliver us only 6-10 years at our current powerusage level if we would use nothing else. I'm not against it but its also limited.
The problems with watermills is there are few places in the world were you can actually put them compared to other plants. Norway is lucky when it comes to this. They make huge profit out of it. But you can't export the same system to for example the US or a lot of westeuropean countries unfortunately.
There maybe are some good spots but not in the same amount like Norway by far if you compare to population %.
@han:
he means norway produces energy via watermills.
...but for you its only a tiny problem wereas for me....
@noir
You are partly right, but it all depends what you do for exercise. And a lot of sports are unhealthy for a lot of things. A lot of athletes, even if they are amatures, are "broken" after they quit. Sprinters to name one sometimes can't walk normally after they are 30. Being fat can result in more heart/blood vessel problems especially if you got the wrong body for it.
There are problems with being skinny as well if you go to far. It depends on the person as well.
"Hell, take it further and go to your parents and make yourself a costly parasite. Make them work 14 hours to support you. See what happens!"
bad example. Its only logical they support their own offspring. I think that part of darwin is accepted by most.
lol@einstein&yell
An important factor people seem to forget here, is that high oil and energy prices will result in more carefull consumation. People will choose cars that use less fuel, and when constructing buildings people will think about the price to heat.
Next to that, nobody seems to include inflation in the calculation. 100$ isn't the same as 100$ 2 years back.
idd loz. Its a pretty pointless debate.
that was a false report from our intelligence office fokker. Pvp lives! ![]()
