An intalian priest is about to launche a beauty contest for catholic sisters. You can vote online.
"Not all sisters are old" the old priest said, some of there are young and especially the ones from "Afrika and latin america are very beautifull.
I'm waiting for the first publicity spot: Sign up your nun today...and win a free ticket to the vatican for one weekend all-inclusif.
"i understand that the question is rethoric because we all keep watching israelis genocide in palestine for decades and doing nothing to stop it. Ossetians just happened to be more lucky to have a neighbour that could and was willing to prevent it."
lucky, not because the leadership wanted to help the osetians but they wanted to be capable of blackmailing the EU countries. The exact reason why they didn't stop at ossetia.
"we all keep watching israelis genocide in palestine for decades and doing nothing to stop it."
Neither did you. On what ground you judge all civilians in all western countries (I presume) the same on this issue? Anyway its way oftopic.
Let us seperate 2 things btw.
Is it desirable georgia would commit crimes in osetia? No.
Is it desirable russia goes to war with georgia and cause even bigger devestation? No.
One isn't an excuse for the other. Please. I never advocate bombing russia in case you didn't notice. Cause I regard russian civilians as being held hostage by their gov, even if some of them don't know that, or don't know the full consequence of that. Further more russian forces can stay in ossetia or ab. as long as they allow a democratic regime and don't do any harm.
Can you post a trustworthy link to the UN SC thingy? I'm intrested in that.

so no senario for defeat? I cannot believe that for any trained organised army in the world. Esp not from that size.
were do you get your facts from then fokker?
What I consider much nicer is the actions of some leaders from some countries seem to justify radical measures or consequences regarding the civilians within a certain border.
Wheter the georgian president started the war or not, wich is still a point of discussion is not a justification for bombing georgia to the stone-age or disturbing its democratic system or even worse, replacing it by a despotism like the russian gov.
like matrix pointed out, its the other way around. It has nothing to do with the church itself.
i.o.w. people who do what they are told have better results in school. We knew that, even if the article isn't all that trustworthy.

@fokker:
"1) Georgia attacked Ossetia."
Questionable. It could have been a reaction as well. In any case there isn't much proove a genocide as they put it.
"2) Ossetia called Russia for help."
Ossetian russians did. In the hope they could remain "indipendant". Its logical they fear georgians with the upcomming tension.
"3) Russia helped."
Russian leaders helped themselfs. There is an important energy supply wich could by-pass russia and at the same time, and georgia is seen as an enemy at the wrong side. Its also a test.
"5) Georgia cried, the world came running and shouted at Russia for doing what apparently is the right thing to do if you flag is made of red, white and blue."
The world was angry at russia for invading georgia full scale instead of solving the conflict in ossetia.
"6) The world orders Russia to go home."
immagine the consequences if they would stay.
"7) Russia sulks."
stop talking about land within a border as if its a human being. Russian leaders mock.
"8) Russia starts picking up its toys to go home."
...The russian army stays for a while.
"9) America realises people are starting to see the hypocritical nature of the actions done by NATO and the US and makes the situation a million times worse in order to cause a distraction."
American what? People, leaders, military?
"10) When this action also raises questions the Americans excuse is "They're not pulling out fast enough""
The russian army didn't pull out while this was on paper by russian leadership. Thats a legitimate excuse for supplying someone with food.
"10a) America hopes nobody points at Iraq and says "You're not pulling out fast enough" in response."
american what?
All in all it seems like Iraq is an excuse for justifying the military intervention in georgia.
think I found it.

@yell:
a missile shield won't work anyway for russia with the tech we have now. So paper,an umbrella,a beer or a missile shield would do the same in a nuclear scenario: making you look even more rediculous in the face of death. Its not a problem for atheist like me, I don't have to live forever afterwards, but others...?
Its not important if it works or not. Whats important is what you bargain for it.
Sorry for creating another thread about georgia but this is an important new event and hence a whole different issue.
Seems like US ships provide georgian troops with food, effectively breaking the blockade of russian ships. This angers the russion staf. All this happens while russians withdraw slowly, wich angers NATO. Seems like the conflict escalates.
Folowing the perverse logic of the cold war and MAD, the escalating conflict probably ends in a complete calmdown and a better cooperation between supperpowers.
I wonder what peoples long-term sollution are in regard to these fresh new cold-war threat. Whatever side you are (not) on, you cannot deny the increasing tension. Any thoughts?
"how do we break the dependancy on other countries, if you don't have natural resources, you don't have natural resources."
By becomming less dependant on those resources in combination with having multiple offers.
@fokker:
USA has enough to destroy the ROW and itself as has russia. As I said before:
1.) submarines
2.) Destroying one powerblock is enough to make the world inhabitable.
I see another good point of the shield. A missile shield can intercept accidentally fired ICBM's and therefore prevent MAD.
So maybe a sollution in this conflict is to limmit the capacity of the shield to 5 or 10 permanently in exchange for russian assurance it will not attack any democracy again.
alan already said most of what I want to say. ![]()
You're always comming up with WHO would be the best leader be justinian, wich is a valid question. However, you never talk about HOW that leader or leaders should be picked. Cause that is the tricky part. (as WFS pointed out)
given the size of franco's empire, he did more then his share in making people disapear.
@justinian:
there is a distinct difference between china, wich is the US biggest trading partner and russia.
China needs food
US needs chinese goods to pay for their investments and to keep the dolar balanced.
They are almost biggest friends.
@bc:
there are weapons to destroy the planet you can fire at home but its not 3 warheads really.
@phoenix:
destroying russia wouldn't destroy its nuclear arsenal. They have submarines. But destroying all of russia probably destroys the world with it. We cannot survive such a post-nuclear world.
Nobody can assure any missile shield to work however I can assure you it won't stop russias ICBMS now.
Justinian:
"Yell: Not a gamble like actually invading Russia. Back them against the wall, and they may retaliate knowing they're screwed anyway."
A full scale invasion of russia almost certainly would cause nuclear tension so not a serious option. Russia on the other hand, want desperatly to avoid to back the western world into a corner, wich would have been the case in this war if georgia joins the nato. Germany and france knew this. Their leaders want to avoid ellectoral catastrpohie.
Less oil imput would be a far better scenario as any other. Oil/gas can be used far more effectively still. Also remember russia got its food import paid by these revenues. His fame is build on good economic results. Starvation or even economic fallback would lead to riots.
"a far cheaper solution is to stop being aggressive with Russia, let them keep their political influence in Eastern Europe, and cooperate with the emerging economic powers in the world."
What would happen then, is that russia gets stronger by the day and even more dangerous. It would be fairly stupid to allow that in any POV, doesn't matter if its ideology or power play. I can't even believe you posted it unless you have a crazy plan to go to russia and become a leader there.
"Except that NATO is a promise on paper, and Russia doesn't mind pieces of paper. Look at the one they signed last week."
what really matters is the meaning for the west. The same logic why they never invaded west-berlin applies here. They knew the west could not afford to loose it in a fight. So they pushed to the border of possibilities, wich was an embargo. Its a perverse logic but it works. They thought the west wouldn't make a stance over georgia. Thats why they invaded.
