To a distracted bystander, the loud blasts echoing form a distance would resemble a fiery thunderstorm. However, the hum of the Spitfire and P-51 Mustang fighters flying over and around Cherbourg left no doubt as to what was happening: allied artillery shells landed closer and closer to the city, as German forces were forced to retreat further into the mainland.

Maarten looked at these events with growing concern. The German soldier knew Cherbourg was crucial in defending occupied France, and he knew the allies would do anything in their power to disrupt the city
