No-one knows who's in whos Alliance until round starts, then you are automatically made one or the other. Permanent War Declaration between Alliances should show on the Map i.e. Home Systems are either Red or Green depending who you are. Round ends when one Alliance is left.

I think Quantam really is the best SS race but the 20% speed bonus makes it very hard to play aggressively.

Yeah I was really worried for a while there, I had three close systems to you that I couldn't afford to have my DSs there lol (luck helped me). I play HC to survive, and I did, win win for me.
