cold beer on a hot day
Which Dune series? Frank Herbert or Brian Herbert?
"Ringworld" by Larry Niven series is good. Also the "Gateway" series by Frederick Pohl but it's kind of whiny. Those are hard science-fiction.
There are two books about the Moties, "The Mote in God's Eye" and "The Gripping Hand"--by Niven and Jerry Pournelle. I liked the first one better.
Robert A. Heinlein did a lot of powerful sociology science-fiction up to the 1970s. "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" is about a penal colony that breaks free of Terran rule. "Stranger in a Strange Land" is a classic of the counterculture, a Man raised by Martians comes back to earth. "Starship Troopers" is a LOT better than the movies.
For an interesting twist read "Starship Troopers" and then "The Forever War" by Joe Haldeman. Haldeman lost a leg in Vietnam and his Galactic war story is about draftees who hate all authority. Try to get an older version, the "New Author's Version" is one where Haldeman tore up what Ben Bova taught him and shows his original draft of the story.
Keith Laumer does a series about a future Earth diplomat who has to stop Earth pansies from giving away our galaxy to alien dictators, usually by breaking into their HQ and slapping around their bosses. Its done for laughs. It's called the "Retief" series, the best are collections of short stories from the 1960s.
Maureen F. McHugh did a really great novel about a future USA hit with drought and overrun by Maoist revolutionaries called "China Mountain Zhang", a half-Chinese American learns how to deal while studying architecture on both sides of the Pacific, and side-stories about street kids hang-glider racing among NY skyscrapers, and their friends on a lunar forced-labor farm.
Ender was a good series but not my favorite. Hitchhiker's Guide was a great series but Adams died before he could make a happy ending in a sixth book.
Harry Harrison did the "Stainless Steel Rat" series which is awesome, not as preachy as his "Deathworld" series. He also did a series about an alternate Earth where dinosaurs got sentient and learnt to breed biological alternatives to our motorized society, like algae that poop steel into seamless bands, and giant itchysaurs that can haul cargo across oceans--and the human beings that fight them.
No, I've learned I have no ability to read when a stock should hit a boom and fall back. I can only do the relatively simple trick of finding a stock that got hit with a panic but is worth more.
You can't just come here and say your boss got fired and leave us hanging!
Now my day is sad
Go to nyse.com. You can look at what that stock has done by month, quarter, or year. You can also go to the directory of listings and get a list of companies in that industry to see what their stock did last trading session. I backed CSX because of that ![]()
I'm catching up!
BW didn't lend me the $200 so sorry for you BW! Don't cry too hard!
you can make orders after close that will be followed once it opens
I'm going strong for XRM and UIS, both undervalued stocks that are on the way back up, sorta.
Gonna get out of RDS.A because its bouncy. For long-term holding while I wait for another XRM or UIS, CSX and other rail. Rail is the most fuel efficient freight transport system and it costs $18,000 to refuel a sixteen-wheel tractor-trailer
yeah but we're generally nicer than other major world powers, in that we sponsor development.
anyhow we're about to launch the Foriegn Policy of Dumbassedness
2012. Mayans said so.
"lol Whenever I want to read anything that doesn't make sense. I just come to the good ol politics forum =p"
Ha we're tyros here. Of course we have a more limited format.
On Halloween Night, 2007 a bunch of Americans started arguing online about whether the Bush Administration organized torture. They were stopped on January 13, 2008, after 3400 posts.

not really "hoping" but curious
Dear Tech Support:
Last year I upgraded from Girlfriend 7.0 to Wife 1.0. I soon noticed that the new program began unexpected child processing that took up a lot of space and valuable resources.
In addition, Wife 1.0 installed itself into all other programs and now monitors all other system activity. Applications such as Poker Night 10.3 , Football 5.0 , Hunting and Fishing 7.5 , and Golfing 3.6.
I can
mishe should go see a doctor because she might have strep
BTW i posted elsewhere I kicked my ass for selling out XRM at $2.25. I bought another 12000 shares at $3.80 and I'll sell at $6
when's the game end btw
John McCain. Tree-hugging SOB.

that or more civic-spirit in riflemen
McCain is a doofus.
Yes Hamas praised Obama. Yes members of Obama's staff said that was great.
BUT Obama hasn't said it was great and he can't really help what Hamas says, and McCain knows it.
What makes McCain a doofus is, there was a McCain rally a month ago and a pep speaker was warming up the crowd to hear McCain, and he referred to "Barack Hussein Obama, the Chicago hack" and McCain ran out into the parking lot and went before the cameras and denounced the guy.
So not only is McCain stretching the truth to smear Obama, he's a backstabber.
BTW Obama is just a liberal goof who will be a tool of Carter's crew, it's already happening. we're screwed.
Expanding the class and number of stockholders boosts stock prices beyond the dreams of avarice. There wasn't much difference between the manner in which stocks were traded in 1900 and 1800. By 2000 every guy Fred with a $500 credit card could buy into IBM. IBM likes it, that's why major companies issue MILLIONS of shares. Nobody forces them to do that. Google could only offer 10,000 shares but they'd lose massive profits waiting for folks to trade a $33,000 share of Google.
The reason Nigeria remains poorer than the USA is that a guy with a thousand rifles can steal more personal power in Nigeria than he could in the United States. Now that wasn't always true of the United States, and if you look back, there were parts of this country run by riflemen and not Boards of Directors. The Boards won through. In Sudan and Somalia, those riflemen are even more lucrative than any industry you can name, and consequently, there isn't much industry in Sudan or Somalia--it's like bringing presents for the warlords to send anything of value into the country.
Grape it in hell you mean?
Polls show the rest of the world thinks America has lost its moral authority. How would you make the rest of the world recognize we the realest [jiggaz]?
lukewarm coffee sucks
the island is the home of the Macross Birdman!!
So? Diversity is a secular value, championing it over faith is intolerance
