"Lets suppose that a military unit is suddenly attacked by superior forces, and death is a likely possibility. The leading commander is a total idiot, is freaking out, and no one trusts him to guarantee their victory and survival. Lets then suppose that a more intelligent and charismatic member of the unit assumes command, simply because the soldiers trust him more and admire his control over his emotions. The resulting outcome is he develops a strategic and tactical plan to defeat the enemy, and is victorious with minimum losses. What happens to the military unit, the commander who emotionally broke, and the lower ranked man who assumed command?"

Strategic orders aren't issued at the field unit level.

Any noncom with a wimp for an officer is trained to grab the wimp into a huddle and twist his balls until he issues the noncom's plan as the officer's orders.

An officer hell-bent on suicide will be abandoned by his men.

If its an American unit, barring direct involvement by the White House, air support will be forthcoming.

Deci, there are no civilians just enemy irregulars who haven't enlisted yet.

I agree! Our forefathers didn't arrest people for clapping, they just clubbed them until the blow flowed freely!

I am ashamed to say the USA won't do much more than talk, under Speaker Pelosi we have already slapped our Colombian allies in the face.

Wouter, Noam Chomsky leads the way in labelling the Tibetan resistance as feudal overlords seeking to impose religious tyranny in the face of progressive socialism

the "bricks" on the tanks are reactive armor, when they sense the shockwave of an approaching warhead they explode and either destroy or slow down the approaching missle to the point it doesn't pierce the armor.

if you recall the flash seen on sloweddown video of 9/11 or the sparks on a blacksmith's anvil, that is compressed air that is so condensed so quickly that it ionizes into plasma.  that happens a split second before the actual impact which is enough time for explosive armor to react and prevent a solid hit

I didn't say aggression against US.

Russia is an aggressor out for a land grab.  I thought we didn't allow that crap.

Sadly the USA no longer has the balls to deal with an aggressor nation, we insist on aggressive diplomacy after the supposed "quagmire" of Iraq.

As a nation of 300 million with an $11,000,000,000,000 economy we insist we can do less than when we had 130 million and $2,000,000,000,000 GDP

EU of course was founded on doing nothing tongue

Because Hitler used the 1932 Games to highlight his Reich. And since then it always has that context.

Why is there a peacekeeping force on Georgian soil?

Go Georgia!

And I remember feeling very stupid when 5000 Russian soldiers surrendered to Chechens about 13 years ago, dunno if the Red Army is much better now

They've got quantum encrypted landlines for the most secure traffic.  But with offices all over the country they make use of regular databases.

I doubt he'd get life in a US prison.  And I believe for friendly civilized nations like the UK, if a foriegn national gets prison time in the USA he can serve it in his home country.  We don't really want nonviolent felons crowding our prisons anyhow, especially foriegners.

Ossetia is Georgian territory, who's next on the Russian hit list?  They already figure they can murder people in London.

We don't have friction with other countries because they seek a reasonable reduction of their Greater Sphere of Influence.  We have friction because they want us to F off altogether.

You'd be suprised at the reach of peripheries under that scheme!

For instance, China considers itself a former colony state ("Third World") so it naturally has much in common with former colony states in Africa and Latin America.  Such as trade ties.  And military deals.  When we refused to send advisers to countries that wouldn't refuse to send us to the ICJ China started sending military advisers into Latin America.  Is that their periphery? They think its part of their sphere of influence.

The local police department belated noticed the local market had exploded and burnt to a ruin populated by shadowy figures wrassling.  Fifteen squad cars scream up to the front of the market.  "Exit now with your hands up!" screamed a cop through a bullhorn.
