You cannot ignore the huge deficit increase and all broken promises. Despite that fact, next time it will be Obama II no matter who wins.
"Obama could send Mitt to Gitmo"
or go himself. Both would be a good thing. ![]()
lol,
is it still called cake then? Maybe I should open a new thread about it ![]()
unless you do it the drug smugglers way...
@einstein:
"Like the Ayatollah huh? Or like Saddam, Hamas, Hezzbollah, Asad, various leaders of Libya, Egypt, Somalia, and Sudan came straight?"
I said, as people gain more freedom. That means the democratic process must hold. Every example you give is an authoritarian regime. Nobody can predict whether the experiment will fail or not I admit that. I hope the democratic movement is big enough to hold. Some countries like Libya have more chances then others.
Yeah I think wfs is right. The "muslim brotherhoods" are different organizations with different agendas and power base. Some are very moderate others are more radical. As people gain more freedom and better education over time, their support will slowly shrink and they will become less radical.
you must be very fat ![]()
on a more serious note, I think its easier not to make personal insults then to moderate afterwards.
true as that may be, firewing, I think yell wants to debate another topic.
I disagree. Its possible to debate almost every subject on this forum without even addressing the person you're debating with. Personal feelings towards a person, true or not, hardly ever increase the debate's level if they are posted.
@Baratheon:
Can't understand why I forgot to post that as an option. Must have been late. ![]()
@Spock:
should I add weirdo as option 6 then? ![]()
I was wondering what you guys think about him. Please keep this poll clean for a while.
1. Hero
2. Criminal
3. Nobody interesting
4. Controversial, but still should've been treated fairer (add by zidi)
5. not too bright (add by xeno)
6. ...
If you want to add an opinion to this poll I will edit this post.
"But we know Egypt certainly didn't."
it took the western world almost a century to abandon the old regime even when they were long democratic. And its still not ideal as you point out. They will slowly adept and hopefully not fall into yet another totalitarian regime.
"You can't force that new government to be democratic with rockets. That requires an invasion and occupation. You claim we can force them. How?"
Its enough for a newly established regime to be threatened. You can blockade them economically and shoot it to ruin. If you only play dead serious about an invasion they will not risk it unless they have a powerful ally. The Libyan leader had no way out so he had to fight. He couldn't make it a democracy or he would be brought to justice. The new Syrian regime prolly has a choice.
"It's real people in a real space on the earth."
This comes from...mister Spock! ![]()
update:
Latest numbers say libertarian family wins against Islamic influenced politicians in Libya with almost 50%. Soon we will see if they can keep up the lead.
United States means less internal war and cheaper large projects. Else it would have been a constant battlefield like Europe in WW1. I'm not happy about the current leadership allright but overall I think its a good project. I only wish the EU worked that way.
"If the rebels are only supported, you're simply trading one tyrant for another."
and yet you said we didn't know what regime would erupt. We can force that new gov to be democratic.
"If you're arguing for an invasion, you can hardly make the argument it can be done with rockets and low casualties."
I'm arguing it can be done with low investment of western lives. But I'm actually pretty sure, if it happens, a little support is enough to make the rebels win. So debating an invasion is premature.
"as likely worse than Assad as better."
How can they be worse? Ask a foreign nation to drop a nuclear onto the capital?
"So now you're arguing a Libya-style assault, without regard for who takes power."
No, I said First pressure,if that doesn't work support,if that doesn't work then invasion. I also made it very clear I want a democracy there, if need be it should be enforced.
"Syria has access to much better arms than Libya did."
But no arms that can shoot rockets out of the sky.
"You can't occupy a nation with rockets."
You can support the rebels that way and destroy their biggest firepower.
"What happened to your claims of ensuring they move toward democratic government?"
Its the first thing we should try (not like right now, but some serious effort). If it doesn't work, next step would be weakening the army.
while we are at it, Russia officially stated "they will not deliver any more arms for the duration of this conflict". Seems like they slowly abandon Syria.
...nice to meet you? ![]()
"Invasion to liberate a democratic ally and invasion to overthrow a government and occupy a people are not quite the same use of the word."
What democratic ally? Western Europe was occupied by the Nazis=not democratic. So it was an invasion to overthrow a gov and occupy temporarily till a democratic gov was installed.
That is to say, just because the word may apply to both circumstances, there are huge differences that your overly-simple discussion of "invasions" misses."
Ofc there are huge differences. But it was a reply to your far too general statement.
"You have absolutely no basis to presume casualties will be "low.""
You don't seriously think they will shoot our rockets out of the sky? Western military leaders are aware of the bad publicity of casualties. It will be a little more costly thats all.
"Hell, I agree. Let's invade Syria. You're not in a military, you won't die to Russian hardware fighting to create a power vacuum which extremists will seek to fill."
Casualties will be low on our side. Even with Russian material.
"You're right. Maybe authoritarian rule",
=nazi's
"invasions,"
=Allies
"imperialism,"
=you fill in
"and genocide"
= Nazi's
"are legitimate functions of government. I can see now that you argue a reasonable position."
Its simply an example of how an invasion is the best option sometimes. Europe became democratic and a better place to live.
