OLD DAYS: "Begad, pay a minimum wage in US currency? My grandfather found this valley, a savage-infested mudspit, and he and my father built it into the colussus you see before you sir! And I shall not wither it out of soft-headed socialism! I am the good steward and I have prospered mightily in the Lord! Begone from private property, vagabond, before I have you thrashed by a policeman!"
TODAY: " I am pleased to inform the Board, that recent concessions by the government of Myanmar, make it highly unnecessary to maintain the expense of the North American branch; and with the closure of operations in the United States, Stankorp will prosper in step with the more responsible political climate of Southeast Asia. As I depart with my $100 million parachute, I'd like to say what a pleasure it was doing business with a swell crew of guys."
"Yell,
Even more radical aye? Don't even want to fund any health care."
Yep, a loser everywhere its tried - until you deny healthcare, like europe.
Good job, and hope things get fixed soon
the son of Render must not become a [TI]
"Social conservatives just don't want young people having s-x. Rather than care about the money saved from a loss of productivity and poverty, they will do whatever they can do make others suffer just because of their asinine religious beliefs."
Go screw a goat and leave my wallet out of it. And yeah, when you use tax dollars for your rubbers, abortion and penicillin, you're in my pants.
"They could have focused elsewhere rather than a puny $300 million that provides essential services to students and the poor."
they aren't essential services.
Glad you're OK warsie.
We in CA know it sucks but ya gotta do what you gotta do, the fault is there and it ain't moving, and that means you gotta fit everything to last, as soon as possible. We spent a few billion after 1989 and then when 1994 showed we still hadn't got it right we spent a few billion more. The alternative is total destruction. Gotta start pressuring your government to come here and to Japan for building codes for earthquake cities (not pointing fingers lemme say-- Minneapolis and St Louis are going to be rubble before the end of the century, they had 8.4 quake in 1805, and they still use BRICK for support walls X( and they WILL NOT be told. Modern is not "earthquake ready" unless you pay to make it so)
you did not tell us you were expecting! congrats, wheres my cigar?
damn guess they didn't repair everything from the first quake, that is a lot of fatalities for a 6.3
sad thing is earthquakes are not weather, they will keep coming back and you have to retrofit asap
"A more powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit Christchurch, a city of 350,000, on Sept. 4, but caused no deaths. The latest one may have been deadlier because it was closer to where people live and work, centered 3 miles (5 kilometers) from the city, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It also may not have been as deep underground.
"The critical issue with this earthquake was that the epicenter was at shallow depth under Christchurch, so many people were within 10 to 20 kilometers (6 to 12 miles) of the fault rupture," said Gary Gibson, a seismologist at Australia's Melbourne University. "
OK there is something wrong here, and I expect the Richter reading to be upgraded before long. 6.3 is somewhat powerful, that can bend railroad tracks into an S, but looking at the photos and this looks more like what hit San Francisco 1989 and that was up there. Richter is logarithmic scale. ALSO this explanation makes no sense because Richter is a measure of SURFACE EFFECT. (there's another scale for total energy released in three dimensions, that the pros use but that's for seismologists, the govt and the public really care about surface effect, that is why Richter survives) this clearly was a rougher quake to ride out, greater surface effect whatever the total energy was

"Pooh-pooh to the Belgians!" he was grinchily humming.
"They're finding out now that no government is coming!
They're just waking up! I know just what they'll do!
Their mouths will hang open a minute or two
Then the Belgians down in Belgium will all cry boo-hoo!
That's a noise," grinned the Grinch, "that I simply must hear!"
He paused, and the Grinch put a hand to his ear.
And he did hear a sound rising over the snow.
It started in low, then it started to grow.

PRC: Why won't you pay up? We got papers here say you owe us billions of dollars.
USA: Very nice papers too; you can arrange them in a frame for some modernist posters.
PRC: I don't know how a modern country can just tell the whole world to go pound sand, the contracts are worthless! What if the People's Republic of China were to...uh...damn!
USA: Ah, the bitter irony.
OK i have reread this thread and I cannot remember any of the matches we talked about ![]()
