Come living in Brussels. The train takes you to the centre of London in 58 minutes!

I don't want to offense BW, but it seems that he too neglects discussions (something he accuses me of) when his statements were proven wrong tongue

"ok, wfs, thank you for that explanation. it was very good. however, what is the link between the old wwii right-wing parties and those of today? simply wanting independence?"

The whole "flemish movement" is quite tainted with its collaborative past. The link between the more extreme right-wing parties and the collaborative parties is that they want to see a pardon for most of the collaborators, as they were "merely striving for the flemish cause"..
I don't deny that the flemish movement was wrong, au contaire, but the pro-flemish demands nowadays are plain selfish..

"wfs, can you elaborate your description of the flemish pro-independence parties as engaging in or turning to nazism?"

During WWI, a flemish movement started to exist at the front. Flemish got their orders in french at a time they hardly spoke any french, so it led to several problems. At the same time, the germans stimulated this unhappyness in the occupied part of Belgium (for a map about the frontline of WWI: http://www.a-w-a.be/nl/belgium1.jpg).
After WWI some first changes were made considering the languages in Belgium, although it went terribly slow. The Front Movement started a political party, the Front Party, a party striving for a bilingual Belgium. Since the changes happened so slow, a lot of people got frustrated and turned away from the Movement. These people started different parties in the late '20s and early '30s, and followed the general tendency of becoming extremely right wing and fascist. The new parties were VNV and Verdinaso, who both develloped great bonds with the Nazi party and collaborated with them (Verdinaso even was for a "greater germany") and they became prime suppliers of SS-troops. The German regnum of course stimulated these feelings.
After WWII, the real big changes in languages started, the country was divided in 3 communities (Flanders, Wallonia and the German Eupen-Malmedy) and 3 regions (Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels) with all of them regulating bodies. With this one can say that equality was established.

"as for that wiki article, the impact of the eu aid was ambiguous. footnote #6 itself is ambiguous."

I added it as a 2nd source, as people are more likely to trust wikipedia rather than a random article.

"as for eastern european countries wanting to join eu, was it for the net transfer payments or ease on trade restrictions/tariffs and emigration? i've never heard of the former reason."

Those too, but heavy aid to build up your economy is one too wink

"p.s. how is frenzy's post less off-topic than BW's yet if not still un-f-modded. if i had to hazard a guess, i'd say nationalism, but that's just a guess."

Cause I simply overlooked it. tongue

Aparently, no one can/is willing to have a discussion about this matter, so I'm considering to close this thread..

At least a western european country could still win the Eurovision songcontest tongue

BW, the European Union donated heavily to get their economy growing. A roadmap was set out in a dialectic discussion between the irish government and the EU. Indeed, the Irish government did its part by changing laws etc but the EU made sure the money was there to make the roadmap happening. This is why so many Eastern European countries are so eager to join the EU..
But to return to the topic: it's very similar to the Walloon scenario wink

Here's a linky or 2:

"it doesn't show the dutch east indies on that one"

true that.. But back then they only held cities and weren't considered actual parts of the empire (that'd be an anacronistic way of thinking).

"WTF Alan are you editing ??
Its not OFF TOPIC.  It directly on topic."

No it isn't. An american situation isn't slighlty related with a belgian political crisis..

"Belgium is a conglomerate of bickering, back biting fiefdoms."

No it isn't... Little's left of the fiefdoms except when used to indicate parts of the country. The only fiefdom name that's actually relevant in the light of this discussion is "Flanders", but it's nowhere near what the actual county was. The meaning it has nowadays is given by WWI social groups who later turned to nazism. As much as I'm proud of being a heir to the great county Flanders was, I loath the meaning it has now. Also, the relationship between the different elements is completely different from the times of the different counties...

"It's (too) easy to blame the prime minister for failing. However, imagine trying to unite 3 different goverments within a country, all with their own agenda, their own political promises towards their voters. It's easy to understand here that the Belgian model is outdated and weighs extremely heavy on the population. We pay nearly as much tax as in finland, but get much much less in return. And why is this? Because we have 3 governements, and a system that isn't working in their decision-making."

I don't blame it on the incapabilty of the prime minister, I blame it on the silly and utter haughty attitude the dutchtalking people take nowadays. It's time that the "flemish" people (in this discussion it's used to indicate the people in the dutchtalking area) start to realise that things have changed since WWI, and that they now are intimidating rather then the french.

"i don't know about all walloons. i know some circles suggest wallonia is decrepit. would you like some articles?"

It is indeed, yet it is innovating and we ought to give it a chance rather than abandoning them. The European Union's economical plan for Ireland was the inspiration for the economic plan for Wallonia. Ireland is now one of the best faring countries in Europe, and as I said before, the Walloon economy is booming too..

Not for me! Historians don't find a job! I'm going to study something else after I graduate next year tongue

"Perhaps b/c all the money Flanders pours into wallonia via subsidies/taxes, etc?"

Exactly, as I said, it's part of a economic revival program, and it works. We in Flanders shouldn't complain about it either, as the walloons did the same in the 19th century for flanders

"cmon, let flanders join netherlands, restore the Greater Netherlands!"

The Greater Netherlands included Wallonia and Luxembourg (and some other territories) ET..

Lee Hunter (Hollyoaks) - My object all sublime I shall achieve in time...

Cover: http://www.flickr.com/photos/newpiano/2670408439/

define "retard" ET.. Wallonia has a better growing economy than Flanders the last 3 years, a great proof the economic revival plan for the region is working. And that's en exact repeat of what they did for Flanders in the 19th century..

As a true belgianist/Europeanist (rather then a supporter of regionalism), I think the current affairs with an incompetent prime minister who's not able to find a solution for the Brussel-Halle-Vilvoorde problem an utter disgrace. It polarizes the situation and it'll make future negociations harder.
