A low but sharp click came from the direction of the gate. Someone had entered the drive. Again there was a long silence, and he had begun to think that it was a false alarm, until a stealthy step was heard from the other side of the hut, and a moment later a metallic scraping and clinking. Someone was trying to force the lock. Maarten snuck behind the door holding his pistol close to his chest. The door opened, but no one seemed to enter. Maarten frowned as he grabbed a match and lit a candle, instantly the steady light from the candle filled the interior of the hut. Slowly peeking outside he tried to get a glimpse of the nocturnal intruder, but there was no one to be seen.

"oooohh Maaaaaarrteeen" a soft voice whispered.

Maarten turned around and waved the candle along side the room, no one was there. A sudden tap on his shoulder and a large fist to his face was what followed. Maarten now knocked down, dropped his gun and tried to grab something to fend off his attacker.

Maarten pulled himself together, and faced the other person in the room with an effort at self-composure. "You are that madman that killed Glue, aren't you" he said.

The figure did not return any kind of acknowledgement, but in stead grabbed a large machete and slowly moved towards Maarten. He started waving the machete at Maarten - now backed up against the wall - who had no where to go and thus started to wave the wooden broomstick he had been able to grab. The fearsome madman was too strong and with a large sweep he slashed through the broomstick, hacking into Maarten's arm. And he hacked again, and again and again, again and again. Furiously hacking and slashing as blood spatters sprayed throughout the room and all over the mad serial killer. The madman laughed as he screamed: "DIEEEE MOBSTER DIEEEE".

He suddenly stopped and clutched the nearest arm, saying, hardly above his breath:

'God! God! what is that?'

'I hear nothing,' Lexuzis replied

'But see -- see!' he said, pointing along the road, directly ahead.

Lexuzis shrugged and said: "Nothing is there. are you all right?" He had released Lexuzis' arm and was standing rigid and motionless in the centre of the illuminated roadway. Lex pulled gently at the man's sleeve, but the stranger seemed not to notice Lexuzis at all. A few moments later, the stranger seemed to have come back to earth and slowly turned towards Lexuzis. Looking a bit sad as he said: "I am sorry, lex".

All Lexuzis saw was something shiny flashing before the stranger plunged a knife deep into his belly. With no one around to help, he helplessly fell to the ground as the mobster ran off.

The sun is rising and a new day lies ahead. The town wakes up with mixed feelings; A mobster had died but so had another loyal townie of Salem.
