Re: where is flint

"ok, well how does abunch of over protective parents sticking their children in youth soccer until they're old enough to demand playing in one of the reputable sports"

You must be confusing soccer with football. Last I checked soccer didn't have layers of padding to protect ppl's wimpy kids from being tackled. wink

"go against what i said about soccer being an unpopular sport in the US?"

Seeing as more ppl play the sport I don't see how you can "claim" it's more popular. It is a simple fact that more people play the sport than any other game. That's a fact. It's as simple as that, I could care less about personal opinions. If you believe it's different otherwise then you are entitles to that belief, but the numbers do not lie. In terms of marketing and such then the big 3 still reign, for now. But typically the best marketed product isn't necessarily the most popular.

And i only come here after raids when I'm bored. WoW ftw. ^.^ With Xeno and Flint out of the way this forum has become rather boring.

international soccer is entertaining to watch. the US beating european teams is like european teams competing in american football and beating the US national team.  Soccer is such an unpopular sport, with none of our best athletes its hilarious when we outperform these countries where soccer is the best thing.

USA however, did not beat a european team, they got owned hard by italy...the only european team they played.

also, the FIFA world rankings are based on victories in matches you played
considering USA plays qualification against teams like haiti and dominican republic, where as say, france plays italy.

obviously it's easier to win to haiti than to italy or france.

and a second also, italy is far from the best team in europe, they're old, and they lack creativity. example given: their 3-0 trashing by holland on the last european championship.

Re: where is flint

I hate to agree with avo (:P) but I would assume that the scoring/ranking system takes into account the quality of opponents. ie even if the USA is only beating apparently-crap teams, then they would get limited benefit from this on their ranking.... yet they have a decent-ish rank.

Having said that, if the USA only plays (and beats) poorer teams with any regularity, then they will get a few points and maintain (slowly increase?) their rank without the risk of losing a lot of points if they played, and got beaten, regularly by better teams.

I guess it's like the ranking system of any sport... even if the system takes into acount the quality (ranking) of the opposition played, there will only be limited benefit from this unless all teams play a bunch of games against a wide range of high-low ranked opposition.

As for nascar - is it too hard to turn in the other direction? Spectators necks must get just as much rsi as those at a tennis match. round n round n round n round n round....zzzzz

Re: where is flint

"the only thing keeping the US from dominating the sport is a lack of interest in it."

Agreed. The most important factors in sporting success of a nation are population, wealth and interest. Obviously the USA has a large and wealthy population. If there was more interest in the game then the USA would undoubtedly dominate football. However, there isn't, and the USA team is rubbish tongue.

Econ, I don't know exactly how the ranking system works and I would hope that it takes into account the quality of the opposition but just by looking at the rankings it can be easily seen that they are wrong because teams are ranked much lower than teams they are better than, and vice versa. The USA is one of the teams that have a ranking much higher than they should do.

Re: where is flint

The main reason that US is higher in ranking than you might think is probably because it performs the best (consistently atleast) in CONCACAF.  However, I took a look at the standings and it doesn't seem too far fetched to me, a few years ago they didn't look like a U14 team like they do now.

How the point system works can be found here:
http://www.fifa.com/worldfootball/ranking/procedure/men.html

And this shows that yes, the ranking does take into account the quality of opposition.

this is one of the most active threads we've had in politics in ages, why close it?

Re: where is flint

As long as it doesn't rudely interrupts another discusson or meaning this is fine. It seems it got a new subject so that is fine, so just make a new thread if you wanna look for flint tongue

The hell?  This is a blatant thread hijacking.  The fact that it became accepted as a soccer thread by everyone only proves that this is a large-scale infraction of the rules.

I don't complain about mods too often, but this ruling takes the cake.  X(

ok, the US beating basically the undisputed top ranked team in the world, proves you're wrong.

Re: where is flint

Since changing the subject is not really against the rules I do not really see the problem here Zarf. Of course you could say this is hijacking or that this is in the wrong part of the forum. But look at it this way, the original question was not politics either so on that behalf nothing really changed here.

As far as the hijacking goes, as no one really attempted to answer you can hardly say anything was interrupted in this thread. So instead of this thread dying lonely at least this thread got a subject where apparently a lot like to talk about. But it seems you prefer to complain then to give others that pleasure...

Re: where is flint

Of course not. Just saying that there are certain shoulds and logical endings, but beauty of most sports and football too is that it doesn't always turn out as expected.
