ummm, news flash. if a new more deadly virus emerges, you won' t be immune to it. ^.^

You come from the Aztec Empire?
"ummm, news flash. if a new more deadly virus emerges, you won' t be immune to it."
Umm, news flash: Let's say a strain of H1N1 mutates into something more deadly. If you'd already caught H1N1 and recovered, you might be immune to the more deadly mutated strain.
Xeno if that were the case then we wouldn't need to get a new flue vaccine every year now would we?
When the strain mutates it becomes a different strain. There is a slight CHANCE that you can be immune to the new strain but that's a crapshoot really. It is more likely that you'll still get sick from the new strain. Same goes for the common cold, every year people get the cold, and every year we get sick form it cause it continues to mutate.
note: Get that book and read it to enlighten yourself to true killer viruses. It's about the Ebola Reston outbreak near Washington DC. True story.
Till its your life on thte line than youll cry like the little girl inside you....
Anyways look up 1918 flu, first winter it was harmless infected a few people no big deal, next winter it mutated from the people it infected the previous winter and became the pandamic that it is known for. I cant predict the future if the swine flu will mutate, but it doesnt mean that its not a possibilty. For all we know the gov will mutate it for us since they made it to begin with.
Yes history repeats itself to those who do not know it, but we know of this.... ![]()
And this isn't 1918 -.-
"Xeno if that were the case then we wouldn't need to get a new flue vaccine every year now would we?"
Actually, we don't need a new flu vaccine EVERY year. They make one every year because not everyone bothers to get the flu shot every year.
"And this isn't 1918 -.-"
Not in your part of the world, I guess. How fortunate for you. You deserve to live, I suppose, and the majority of the human race who ARE still living in 1918 in terms of access to medical treatment and nutrition, don't deserve to survive, right?
"They make one every year because not everyone bothers to get the flu shot every year."
Incorrect. They get it because it's a new strain. Who the heck teaches you this stuff honestly? If you say some teacher told you they should get their license revoked.
"Not in your part of the world, I guess. How fortunate for you. You deserve to live, I suppose, and the majority of the human race who ARE still living in 1918 in terms of access to medical treatment and nutrition, don't deserve to survive, right?"
Again incorrect. Medical facilities all around the world have vastly improves over the past 100 years. Technology has made accessible health care available to billions. Even so called "3rd world" nations have an extensive health care system. Though these systems may be overworked they do exist where as back in 1918 they didn't. Again, where the heck are you getting this false information from? Your sources are severely flawed.
"Incorrect. They get it because it's a new strain."
Listen for a sec: I know that's why they get it. But I'm saying (and this is where you listen) they don't have to. The effect of getting a new vaccine every year and getting a vaccine every few years is pretty much the same! Why? Becuase people don't get flu shots every year! Listen, will you?
"they do exist where as back in 1918 they didn't"
Ok. Listen again, will you? Back in 1918 there wasn't a hospital in Fisda village in the highlands of Zaire (or whatever they've renamed the country). Now, today, there is STILL no hospital in that village, ok?
Also, in 1918 the village of Madia Jur in North-western India, didn't 'exist', as it was constructed 2 years ago. In fact, it still doesn't really 'exist' today, because it is a slum, not on any map, not recorded in any census. Guess what? It doesn't have a hospotal, either.
Will you start listening?
"But I'm saying (and this is where you listen) they don't have to. The effect of getting a new vaccine every year and getting a vaccine every few years is pretty much the same! Why? Becuase people don't get flu shots every year! Listen, will you?"
The thing is your wrong. ^.^ And now I want to know who was the person who taught you this false information.
"Ok. Listen again, will you? Back in 1918 there wasn't a hospital in Fisda village in the highlands of Zaire (or whatever they've renamed the country). Now, today, there is STILL no hospital in that village, ok?"
Most people don't live in these small villages anymore, most now live in large urban areas. Your worried that one small village in the middle of nowhere where nobody lives doesn't have a hospital when I'm more concerned with the billions of people living in large urban areas where medical treatment is available. I don't know where your getting this information from, but it's all false.
Even people in these regions are more likely to die from a car accident than they are to get sick much less die from this "virus". Only a handful of the infested people from this thing have actually died, most of them have recovered and are now fine. It is not a big deal. Why not try to bring up a topic that effects more people and is more pressing.
"Most people don't live in these small villages anymore"
But, you are are wrong.
Have you ever been to a developing country? Most people DO live in such villages. They just happen to be called 'slums' now.
"he billions of people living in large urban areas where medical treatment is available."
No, it isn't. If you pay a month's savings on the fee, perhaps it is available. When swine flu hits, though, the few people who will be willing to pay half a year's savings just to get their family members diagnosed (nevermind actually paying for the AV drugs), will catch swine flu just sitting in the waiting room.
"Even people in these regions are more likely to die from a car accident"
You mean horse accident, right? They don't have cars. Lol.
"who taught you this false information [re annual vaccinations"
No one. It pretty logical if you think about it: if only such and such percentage of the population bothers to get flu shots every year, the annual vaccines don't prevent the spread of the virus and thus its mutating to a new strain. If every human on earth got a flu shot every year, then it might be effective.
But tell me this, what percentage of the world's population gets the flu shot in a given year?
Tell me this, what percentage the world dies to the flu each year, statistically over the last 100 years?
Or if you want an easier one on your mind, what percentage of the population gets the flu averaged over a hundred years?
>>Not in your part of the world, I guess. How fortunate for you. You deserve to live, I suppose, and the majority of the human race who ARE still living in 1918 in terms of access to medical treatment and nutrition, don't deserve to survive, right?<<
I'm sorry I missed the part where you explained why I owe them better care at a cost to the standard of living of my family. Care to explain why I owe you anything again?
There's no point in arguing the science with xeno, considering his people have little scientific knowledge and he's learned next to none (and been miseducated by ignorant idiots as often as not)
>>Ok. Listen again, will you? Back in 1918 there wasn't a hospital in Fisda village in the highlands of Zaire (or whatever they've renamed the country). Now, today, there is STILL no hospital in that village, ok?<<
That's because they're dirt farmers, they [ ] their kids, and their leaders oppress them. Maybe they'll have hospitals when they stop these behaviors.
"But, you are are wrong. tongue Have you ever been to a developing country? Most people DO live in such villages. They just happen to be called 'slums' now."
According to the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs over half of the world population now live in urban areas.
slum (noun) - a densely populated usually urban area marked by crowding, dirty run-down housing, poverty, and social disorganization
You may think they are villages but they aren't, they are part of urban centers. These are facts, not assumptions.
"No, it isn't. If you pay a month's savings on the fee, perhaps it is available. When swine flu hits, though, the few people who will be willing to pay half a year's savings just to get their family members diagnosed (nevermind actually paying for the AV drugs), will catch swine flu just sitting in the waiting room."
Obviously you don't know what the real cost of health care in these countries. You are assuming this with no facts to back it up. Assume nothing.
"You mean horse accident, right? They don't have cars. Lol."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automobile
This doesn't include mass trans it numbers, bicycles, scooters, ect ect ect. People don't use horses in urban environments for the most part. Even in "rural" areas cars aand automobiles are very common. Welcome to 2009.
"No one. It pretty logical if you think about it:"
If the illogical person is saying what they say is logical then by definition what they say is illogical.
"if only such and such percentage of the population bothers to get flu shots every year, the annual vaccines don't prevent the spread of the virus and thus its mutating to a new strain. If every human on earth got a flu shot every year, then it might be effective."

"Tell me this, what percentage the world dies to the flu each year, statistically over the last 100 years?"
Approx half a million every year world wide flint. Which considering that this outbreak hasn't even killed 1k people makes it laughable in comparison.
it hasnt killed any serious numbers yet, because the situation is still developing. it may not, but im telling you any vaccine that baxter produces for the swine flu is gonna be more deadly than the flu it self!!
"Approx half a million every year world wide flint. Which considering that this outbreak hasn't even killed 1k people makes it laughable in comparison."
OMG, LIzon, how dense are you! You have NO idea how many cases there are nor how many it has killed so far. The WHO itself can ONLY guess. They ONLY report the confirmed cases - that is those who actually go to the hospital for testing / treatment.
They can only guess the real number of cases and deaths, because, and here is where you listen: Most humans DON'T have access to healthcare.
"n the United States, 6,552 probable and confirmed cases of H1N1 influenza, including nine deaths and more than 300 hospitalizations, have been reported to the CDC as of May 22, says Anne Schuchat, CDC
In the States, a poor, single elderly person living in the projects in some US city catches swine flu and dies in their sleep. They find the body days after the virus has run its course and now leaves no evidence that cause of death was swine flu. They aren't going to bother to take blood samples, send them across the country, to CDC. Nope. Some local coroner will just stamp her file, 'died from natural causes', and go onto the next case. And this is in the US, never mind developing countries.
The sad fact is, in developing countries, there won't be much notice of the increase in deaths. Some coroners will notice their slightly extra work load. Maybe some crematoriums will start a night shift. That's about it.
I mean what world do you live in, Lizon? Wake up. How many people in total die everyday day in developing countries' migrant slum communities?
Will a slight rise in the death rate really matter to us, the elite?
News flash: You, I, everyone with their own computer, mobile phone, bank account, air-conditioned room, and at least a high school education is the elite - we are a minuscule portion of humanity at the pinnacle of our social hierarchy. And we are the ones spreading H1N1 around the world. We - those who can afford to fly on airplanes, and travel between countries - are the catalyst, and we are also going to be the ones to suffer the least.
I said deaths, not infections. Read first before commenting. The case fatality rate on this virus is less than .1% (that's right .1%). When this thing reaches over 1m deaths come back here and talk about a possible pandemic, until then it's no big deal. I'm looking at this thing from a different perspective, more people will die from car crashes than this thing. More people will die from starvation, heck more people will die from extreme sports than this virus. You just don't seem to realize how insignificant this virus is. I am not concerned about this thing and neither should you. Nor should so called "3rd world" counties worry about it, the virus will run it's course, maybe a few thousand dead but that's acceptable. It make seem to be cold blooded but as a species it's a minor issue to be concerned with. If you are so personally concerned about it join up with the international red cross and do something about it, else stop wasting everybody's time with your silly arguments.
You make light of the seriousness of the situation, and THAT is irresponsible.
Other interesting facts from the article:
"Now that the virus has entered humans, researchers expect it to mutate at the same rate as currently circulating seasonal influenzas."
It will become more easily transmissible.
[...]Genetic analysis of the new H1N1 virus reveals that three of its genes, including the hemagglutinin gene (the H in H1N1), originally came from the 1918 Spanish influenza virus and have been present in pigs ever since. "
It will probably become more virulent.
"[...] Viruses isolated from patients during the first two weeks of the current outbreak already have changes on the outer surface on the neuraminidase protein that could interfere with antibodies against the virus or alter the effectiveness of future vaccines. But none of the changes have altered the parts of the protein targeted by antiviral drugs, such as Tamiflu or Relenza."
They will probably not be able to create a vaccine for it, and so our best bet is simply AV drugs.
People need to know the facts NOW so they can prepare.
Your watering down of the severity, Lizon, may actually kill people. Irresponsible.
"It will become more easily transmissible."
Of course it will.
"It will probably become more virulent."
Irreverent and inconclusive, considering it's case fatality rate it would seem to have gotten much much weaker. If we were talking baout a 5-10% fatality rate that would be different. But we aren't now are we? ![]()
"They will probably not be able to create a vaccine for it, and so our best bet is simply AV drugs."
Which means it's acting like normal influenza, which again isn't that big of a deal since we already deal with that every year as it is.
"People need to know the facts NOW so they can prepare."
Let the scientists handle that and you go on your merry little way and don't concern yourself with it. There are bigger fish to fry than this minnow.
"Your watering down of the severity, Lizon, may actually kill people. Irresponsible."
Overblowing a situation can be just as deadly, reallocating resources from projects that can save more lives for an insignificant nuisance. I know a lot more about this thing than you apparently do, stop reading what the media force feeds you and do some actual research for once.
--
And Xeno, haven't you noticed by now that nobody really agrees with you on anything? Your always the only one trying to argue your point. You have to face facts, you aren't going to accomplish anything here. Your wasting everybody's time. ^.^
If we were talking baout a 5-10% fatality rate that would be different. But we aren't now are we? wink
But we probably will face such a mortality rate when it hits the developing world. But, again, we probably will never know, as we won't get straight facts out of those countries.
And Xeno, haven't you noticed by now that nobody really agrees with you on anything?
Again, you're wrong. ![]()
Wrong, wrong, wrong. Many do agree, just not on this site.
