Except that some Christians believe, and are in fact taught, that with very few exceptions any sin can and will be forgiven. So in essence they're taught they could, in theory, go out and kill 50 people and still get to heaven if they say sorry. I know this because it's what I was taught before leaving the church. Religion CAN give you a solid point to focus your morality but it can also produce some very frightening lines of thought.
Well not totally true. In the bible it says God will not be made a fool of. So if you are comming a sin knowing that its a sin your punishement is greater for it then if you didnt know it was a sin. Also if a person keeps praying or promising to god he/she will not commit the sin anymore and keeps asking for forgiveness there is also a possibility of god not forgiving them.
Most people just dont read the bible and go by what they hear and learn from others... and just fallow religious beliefs, and use their own judgment to jusitfy what god approves off and doesnt.
And about killing 50 people, lets say you did do that as a christain, would your conscious be 100% honest in asking for forgiveness? As in would your words really be meaningful or just some jibber to make you feel better about killing the 50 people.
But kind of back to the subject, its hard to say is atheism is damaging the society because you can also argue you the same about religion... atheists have hitler and christians have priests who rape lil kids. So on both sides there are a few people that throw off each side, so it makes it quite difficult to state which one is making society worse, to many facts to argue with.
