A distant planet came into view, the countless stars dotted the pitch-black tapestry of space, its silence mocking the panic and fear in the hearts of many a crew member. But none of that concerned crew member Maarten, because he had his comics to read. His main responsibility on the ship was to make sure the waste disposal units worked flawlessly, so his shifts were usually short and uneventful. As a result he spent most of his time locked inside his cabin, reading the many comics full of nudity and gore. And with the captain's order to stay in one's own cabin as much as possible, he only smiled as the idea of having to spend even more time reading and sleeping. But tonight was different, because Maarten felt like he never felt before. He felt the need to go for a walk. When the urge arose, he just dropped his comic and stared at the ceiling, but the feeling wouldn't go away. He still needed some light exercise! So he finally got up, sighed heavily and opened the door. Looking around, he saw the corridor was empty, so he figured it was safe. As long as he didn't go into a machine room or anything, surely there'd be no harm?

Walking around in the silent corridors, Maarten started to whistle. For some reason he felt safer than ever. So safe in fact that he didn't care to look around him when he came past another corridor. If he had done so, he'd have noticed the vague shadow of someone watching him as he strolled past. The figure waited a bit longer and then started to follow his unwitting, whistling victim. Walking a bit strangely, the bodysnatcher was clearly still getting used to the human body. Perhaps its victim still had a faint will of his own and tried to fight. Either way, moving a bit uneasily or not, the bodysnatcher had no trouble catching up with Maarten. Rapidly blinking, the bodysnatcher's eyes turned red for a split second and then it all happened in a split second.

When Maarten woke up, he felt as if his head had just exploded. But what worried him more was that he could only see through his left eye. He turned his head, but immediately regretted doing this when he saw his right eye staring back at him, lying on the ground only a few inches away from him. Suddenly he felt a searing pain in his leg and he looked up as well as he could, realising he was tied down. He stared into the face of the bodysnatcher who was holding his leg and a knife with which he had just cut it off. A wicked grin appeared on his face, a face Maarten recognised as a crew member with whom he had a binge drinking night just weeks ago. The snatcher spoke a few words in its wicked alien tongue before directing its attention to Maarten's other leg. When the pain became worse Maarten fainted again, this time for good.

There was no other choice. In order to survive, he would have to kill everybody else. That way, the bodysnatchers would never get a hold of him. When he had made the decision, it all made perfect sense to him. He had panicked when the news spread around. In fact he was probably panicking more than anybody else on this ship. But he quickly gathered his senses and decided to take action, no matter how crazy it seemed. Looking around his cabin, he decided an axe would make a good weapon to begin with and quickly went on his way. An hour earlier he had made a list of all the crew members, making all sorts of selections as to who he'd kill first. With his first victim decided, he had no time to lose. Thinking of the possible reactions of his victim before he'd swing the axe, the insane crew member didn't notice the box in the middle of the hallway. He tripped just when he was dreaming of cutting his victim's head off. "What the hell's this doing here?" He got up and kneeled next to the box. On the top were a few weird symbols, written in a dark substance, could it be blood? He slowly opened the box and almost couldn't believe it. Staring back at him with one eye was Maarten's head. So he was no bodysnatcher after all, the insane crew member thought, before he stood up and quickly walked away from the box. He didn't want to be seen near it holding his axe, so he quickly walked down the corridor. As he was already pondering on his victim for next night, he noticed several boxes, spread over the corridor. At the end of the corridor, his curiosity got the better of him and he opened one of the other boxes. In it he found the torso with a name label "Maarten - WASTE DISPOSAL MAINTENANCE".
